Out Music: Jakk Fynn “Fire”

Transmasculine Latinx pop artist Jakk Fynn

Transmasculine Latinx pop artist Jakk Fynn Jakk Fynn, a transmasculine Latinx pop artist dedicated to redefining masculinity, dropped his latest single this week, “Fire.” Unrequited love is the subject at hand in the pop/dance track. “Oftentimes, queer individuals don’t feel wholly accepted, seen or loved for who they are,” says the artist. “When romantic feelings are so infrequently returned, this can exacerbate an already deeply internalized identity struggle.” “Attraction and love are fairly involuntary,” adds Fynn. “Our central nervous system is a massive orchestration of electrical impulses that ‘fire.’” Jakk, a descendant of Mexican immigrants, is committed to using pop music’s power to uplift audiences and challenge toxic social narratives, especially for audiences who don’t often see themselves fairly and accurately represented in mainstream culture. His previous single, “Share the Seconds,” was released in 2018. Transmasculine Latinx pop artist Jakk Fynn

A Gay Teen Had Enough Of Being Called ‘F*ggot’

Jordan Steffy had had enough. In his Twitter bio, Jordan writes, “Don’t let one word define who you are.” He had been called ‘f*ggot’ one time too many and was DONE. The LaPorte High School junior in Indiana says that he’s been the target of homophobic bullying since he came out in seventh grade. Steffy shared with Insider.com that a classmate recently posted a homophobic message on Snapchat using a photo of him. “He made an anti-gay post with a picture of me on it saying how he hated gays and a bunch of throwing up emojis all over it,” Steffy told Insider. “I walked up to him and said ‘Why did you post this?’ He said ‘It was just a post.’ And I said ‘Well, it’s not just a post. It’s a post about me, saying how you dislike who I am, and I don’t appreciate that.’ He went on to say ‘Okay, but what are you going to do about it?’ I said ‘I’m not going to deal with this, this is the last time I’m called anything.’ “And then he said ‘What are you going to do about it, faggot?’ And that’s when I was like ‘No, I’m not doing this.'” What followed was the slap seen round the world. https://twitter.com/JordanSteffy1/status/1193002314879184898 The video has been viewed more than a million times on Twitter in less than a day. In subsequent responses to others, Jordan was surprised by the show of support, saying “I really can’t believe people actually are around to tell me that it was ok to stick up for myself!” “I honestly was just looking for an apology,” said Jordan. “But he acted like it was no big deal and that has been the word to define me since 2nd grade.” Apparently the fallout was the school suspended him and the bully, but his suspension was longer “due to the fighting.” Jordan added, “But I am taking it as a lesson to not be anyone’s doormat and to leave your shoes at the door.” One Twitter user asked if he was ok and he answered with a resounding, “Yes I’m good better than ever – I honestly can’t thank people enough for all the support! Thank you for taking the time to check!” One parent wrote, “As a mom, I think you did good.” Jordan responded that his mom totally has his back. He shared that while his mom doesn’t condone fighting, she felt it was ok to stand up not only for himself but for others as well. In fact, because his mother didn’t like the way the school administration handled the event, Jordan says she’s decided to homeschool Jordan. As folks offered their support, Jordan said he doesn’t think he’s “any better than any person just because I stuck up for myself.” He went on to add he wants other kids “who are going through the same thing day in, day out from friends, classmates, random people” to stick up for themselves “and to have confidence!” And the collective consciousness of bullied LGBTQ students rose up and cheered. https://twitter.com/DoctorJonPaul/status/1192984942537363457 https://twitter.com/davitydave/status/1193007679230185472 https://twitter.com/Joshooahvee88/status/1193023310679986177 https://twitter.com/invertibrate/status/1193082071368916993 https://twitter.com/jarekendel/status/1193016086112980993 https://twitter.com/loudandobvious/status/1193009454574264321 https://twitter.com/IsbaeMinsuga/status/1193163356015869952 https://twitter.com/anthony_MB75/status/1193076975390380032 https://twitter.com/CRUELCASSIUS/status/1193065966550355968 https://twitter.com/Kangaesugiru/status/1193059704903102464 https://twitter.com/Vindemiaee/status/1193215751416619008 https://twitter.com/YungxZorua/status/1193015184052367362   Some had no time for the unseen teacher who chimed in with a tame, “Hey, hey, Jordan, that’s enough.” Or, maybe the teacher wanted Jordan to get some licks in…? https://twitter.com/readkropotkin/status/1193150343359664129 https://twitter.com/ScrapeSquadMK/status/1193041967799816192 https://twitter.com/heschristofer/status/1192992735705231360 https://twitter.com/rob_bieber/status/1193151177271267328   I want to be clear that violence shouldn’t have to be ‘the answer.’ But, as we can see in the outpouring of support for Jordan, there are a LOT of folks out there who understand this scenario all too well.

Wrestling Referee Says He Told GOP Lawmaker About Doctor’s Sexual Misconduct

Ohio State University wrestler during a match
In a lawsuit filed Thursday in federal court in Ohio, a wrestling referee said deceased doctor Richard Strauss masturbated in front of him while showering after a 1994 match at Ohio State University, and he reported it to then-assistant coach Jim Jordan. Jordan is now a powerful congressman and has denied knowing anything about the numerous reports of inappropriate sexual behavior by Strauss during his tenure as a physician for the university athletes from 1986 to 1994. Strauss passed away in 2005. The lawsuit was filed by 43 individuals who say they were victims of Strauss’ abuse. The filing cites episodes of Strauss “drugging and raping athletes,” including underage boys who took part in athletic events at the university. The referee, identified as John Doe 42, says both Jordan and then-head coach Russ Hellickson didn’t seem surprised when he told them about the encounter in the showers with the doctor. “Yeah, that’s Strauss,” Jordan and then-head coach Russ Hellickson told Doe, reports NBC News. “Yeah, yeah, we know.”
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH)
“It was common knowledge what Strauss was doing, so the attitude was it is what it is,” John Doe 42 told NBC News. “I wish Jim, and Russ, too, would stand up and do the right thing and admit they knew what Strauss was doing because everybody knew what he was doing to the wrestlers.”  “What was a shock to me is that Strauss tried to do that to me,” added the referee. “He was breaking new ground by going after a ref.” Another of the victims, identified at John Doe 49, said Strauss told him to take off his pants when he went to see the doctor about an ingrown toenail during a wrestling camp. John Doe 49 says he was 14 or 15 years old at the time, and the physician threatened him with a scalpel before sexually abusing him. Earlier this year in May, a team of investigators hired by Ohio State University found the doctor had sexually abused “at least 177 male student-patients.” “We find that University personnel had knowledge of Strauss’ sexually abusive treatment of male student-patients as early as 1979, but the complaints about Strauss’ conduct were not elevated beyond the Athletics Department of Student Health until 1996,” read the report according to NBC News. The referee is the second person to say they approached Jordan about the physician’s behavior. Dunyasha Yetts, a former wrestler for Ohio State, has previously shared that the doctor attempted to pull down his pants when he saw Strauss about a thumb injury. Responding to John Doe 42’s testimony, Yetts told NBC News, “It’s good that people are starting to come forward and say the truth, which is that Jordan and the other coaches knew what was going on and they blew it off.” Several former Ohio State athletes have shared that Strauss’ behavior was basically an ‘open secret’ among athletes but the coaching staff didn’t seem inclined to take action regarding the allegations. The story became national news in 2018 when former university wrestler Mike DiSabato came forward to not only accuse Strauss but share that the coaches, including Jordan, turned a blind eye to the behavior. At the time, DiSabato said, “They knew, they all knew, and they did nothing.” For his part, Jordan says he didn’t know anything about the alleged behavior. “I never knew about any type of abuse,” Jordan told Politico last year. “If I did, I would have done something about it. And look, if there are people who are abused, then that’s terrible and we want justice to happen.”  (source: NBC News – lead photo: Mark Lundy/Flickr – CC License)

Trump: ‘Little Michael’ Bloomberg Will Fail

Donald Trump told reporters today he’d be “happy” if former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg were to jump in the 2020 presidential election.

“There’s nobody I’d rather run against than Little Michael. I‘ve known Michael Bloomberg for a long time. He said a lot of great things about Trump. But I know Michael. He became just a nothing. He’s not going to do well, but I think he’s going to hurt Biden, actually. But he doesn’t have the magic to do well.

“He’ll spend a lot of money. He has some really big issues, some personal problems, and he’s got a lot of other problems. But I know Michael Bloomberg fairly well. Not too well, but fairly well. Well enough. He will not do well. And if he did run, I’d be happy.”

As much as the Donald loves to talk about how rich he is, Bloomberg – worth more than $52 billion – is really, really rich.

Greyson Chance Is Dropping Beats In ‘Boots’

Hey hey, Lil Nas X, there’s more than one cowboy dropping beats in boots. Out singer/songwriter Greyson Chance drops his latest single & music video, “Boots.” The 22-year-old says he wrote the track as his response to how pop culture is currently embracing Western imagery. Chance says while writing the song he found himself “imagining what Johnny Cash would be like if he were around and making music in 2019.” The Oklahoma native says that ‘Western’ isn’t so much about style, “it’s about an attitude, an obsessive loyalty, and an unwavering wildness.”

I’ve been western before all of these punks These punks in California who think that they can punch

Chance tweeted out a dedication for the song telling his 2.7 million followers the track is for “the stars in California who can’t throw a punch.” Musically, “Boots” delivers a polished synth-pop rock vibe that’s earthy with an edge, and Chance’s vocals are smooth and confident.

Chance first found the public spotlight when a video of him performing Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” went viral in 2010 (the video has over 66 million views on YouTube). Ellen DeGeneres invited him on her talk show, and he was soon off and running. He released his debut album in 2011 but stepped away from music at the age of 18 to focus on his college studies. His latest album, portraits, was released earlier this year to strong reviews. In 2017, he came out via an Instagram post encouraging others “navigating their sexuality to devote as much time as they need to the process of finding self-confidence, self-acceptance, and self-love.” He added that he felt it was “time to let a few more friends know that I am happy, I am here for you, and I am proud of who I am.”

The decision to write this came after I received a message from a brave individual. Such message inspired me to shed light on an aspect of my private life which I have kept distant from my career in music. I came to fully recognize that I was gay when I was sixteen. I decided not to publicize my sexuality largely due to a matter of privacy, as I was still trying to find comfort and confidence within my own skin. Further, I always found conversations regarding music, politics, art, books – and the greatness of Nas’ catalog – to be far more interesting than what type of guy I was into. This is still true today. While this message is most definitely overdue, I encourage anyone who is navigating their sexuality to devote as much time as they need to the process of finding self-confidence, self-acceptance, and self-love. Hell, for me, it took years to write this message. Nevertheless, I figured now was the time to let a few more friends know that I am happy, I am here for you, and I am proud of who I am. Cheers -G

New Pride Ad From Sprite Celebrates The Support Of Family

A new ad spot for Sprite, released last week in Argentina to coincide with the 28th annual Buenos Aires Pride, has gone viral for its pro-LGBTQ message. Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, celebrates Pride each year (known as Marcha de Orgullo) on the first weekend of November to commemorate the origin of Nuestro Mundo (English: Our World).  Nuestro Mundo, the first pro-LGBTQ group in Argentina, began in 1967 working to bring awareness to the oppression of homosexuals in the South American country. This year’s Pride event drew an estimated 300,000 people. With Carousel’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone” for musical background, the ad features several young people preparing to attend the annual Pride festival: A mother helping a son with makeup, a young girl helping her trans brother get dressed, a grandmother helps her grandson dress in drag, a family paints Pride banners and a dad takes his gay son and the son’s boyfriend to the festival. The short video ends with the text, “Orgullo: Lo que sentís cuando alguien que querés elige ser feliz” (“Pride: What you feel when someone you love chooses to be happy”) and “No estás solx” (“You’re not alone”). The look on the father’s face at the end totally lands. On Twitter, the spot has been retweeted over 20,000 times and garnered nearly 60,000 Likes.

Malaysia: Gay Men Sentenced To Public Caning Then Months In Prison

Five Malaysian men in Kuala Lumpur have been sentenced to at least six months in prison and being whipped with a cane for “attempting to have gay sex,” according to Reuters. Additionally, four of the men have been fined RM4,800 ($1,163) and the fifth was fined RM4,900. The men, along with seven others, were arrested last November during a raid at a private apartment and convicted of “attempting to have intercourse against the order of nature,” which is a crime under Islamic laws. Five of the remaining seven men will face sentencing later this month. Calling the sentences “a gross injustice,” LGBTQ activist Numan Afifi – who attended the sentencing hearing today – told news site MalayMail that the sentences were “outrageous” and would “create a culture of fear.” Two Malaysian women were caned in September 2018 as well for “attempting lesbian sex in a car.” The caning of women is banned under civil law but some Islamic states allow it under shariah law. At the time, Amnesty International issued a statement saying the canings marked “an appalling day” for human rights in Malaysia. MalayMail notes that sodomy is a crime under Malaysia’s regular criminal code as well as under Islamic law. However, it is apparently rare for citizens to be found guilty of the crime. Malaysia provides no legal protections for LGBTQ individuals. Those arrested for same-sex encounters face up to 20 years in prison, as well as fines and whippings. (source: Reuters)

Former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg Weighing A 2020 White House Run

From the New York Times:

Michael R. Bloomberg is actively preparing to enter the Democratic presidential primary and is expected to file paperwork this week designating himself as a candidate in at least one state with an early filing deadline, people briefed on Mr. Bloomberg’s plans said.

Mr. Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor and billionaire businessman, has been privately weighing a bid for the White House for weeks and has not yet made a final decision on whether to run, an adviser said. But in the first sign that he is seriously moving toward a campaign, Mr. Bloomberg has dispatched staffers to Alabama to gather signatures to qualify for the primary there. Though Alabama does not hold an early primary, it has a Friday deadline for candidates to formally enter the race.

A Fox News poll found in late October that Mr. Bloomberg would face more opposition than enthusiasm at the outset of a primary campaign: Presented with Mr. Bloomberg as a hypothetical entrant into the primary, 6 percent of Democratic primary voters said they would definitely support him, while 32 percent said they would never vote for him.

I highly doubt Democrats are clamoring for a 77-year-old billionaire who used to be a Republican to enter the race. That said, Bloomberg would irritate Trump by being in the race if for nothing else than the fact that the former NYC mayor is REALLY, REALLY rich.
