Report: Trump Called Fallen US Soldiers ‘Losers’ And ‘Suckers’

Donald Trump is facing a firestorm of criticism after a report from The Atlantic (based on several sources) shared that Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018 not because his helicopter couldn’t get him there but because he reportedly didn’t understand the point in honoring our military dead.

Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.”

In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.

The article goes on to say in a 2018 meeting about planning a military parade, Trump sought to exclude injured service members because parade attendees might feel uncomfortable in the presence of amputees. “Nobody wants to see that,” Trump reportedly said. The AP confirmed several aspects of the article: “A senior Defense Department official with firsthand knowledge of events and a senior U.S. Marine Corps officer who was told about Trump’s comments confirmed some of the remarks to The Associated Press, including the 2018 cemetery comments.” Alyssa Farah, a White House spokesperson, emailed this statement to the author of the article:

“This report is false. President Trump holds the military in the highest regard. He’s demonstrated his commitment to them at every turn: delivering on his promise to give our troops a much-needed pay raise, increasing military spending, signing critical veterans reforms, and supporting military spouses. This has no basis in fact.”

Trump followed up with a series of tweets, of course:

As shown in the video above, we’ve seen Trump (who never served in the military receiving several deferments due to ‘bone spurs’) criticize military veterans like Sen. John McCain as well as Gold Star families in the past. So, none of this should really shock us as it seems to fit Trump’s mold. Former Vice President Joe Biden, whose son Beau served in Iraq in 2008 & 2009,  issued a statement criticizing the reported remarks:

“If the revelations in today’s Atlantic article are true, then they are yet another marker of how deeply President Trump and I disagree about the role of the President of the United States. I have long said that, as a nation, we have many obligations, but we only have one truly sacred obligation — to prepare and equip those we send into harm’s way, and to care for them and their families, both while they are deployed and after they return home. That’s the foundation of what Jill and I believe.

“It’s why we’ve always prioritized the health and well-being of our service members, veterans, and military families. We’ve visited troops coming home wounded in Walter Reed. We’ve hosted wounded veterans in our home to share a Thanksgiving meal. And, as the proud parents of a son who served in Iraq, we’ve made supporting military spouses, caregivers, and children a focus of our service.”

“Generations of American troops have shed blood around the world in defense of our freedoms and to protect U.S. vital interests. From the frontlines of our own Revolution to Belleau Wood to the Normandy beaches to the mountains of Afghanistan, the sacrifice and bravery of our troops and their willingness to serve our nation should be honored. Duty, honor, country — those are the values that drive our service members.

“Those are the values that have formed the core of America’s defense for centuries. And if I have the honor of serving as the next commander in chief, I will ensure that our American heroes know that I will have their back and honor their sacrifice — always.”

In related news, new polling from Military Times indicates Trump’s favorability rate plunging among both active-duty troops and officers. Perhaps more importantly, 41 percent plan to vote for former Vice President Joe Biden versus 37 percent for Trump.

Joe Biden Meets With The Family Of Jacob Blake

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Jill Biden met with the family of Jacob Blake during a trip to Kenosha, Wisconsin. The city has been rocked by unrest following the shooting of Blake, a Black man, was shot in the back seven times by a police officer. From CBS News:

The Bidens met privately with members of the Blake family in a Milwaukee airport terminal. They spoke with Blake’s parents, three siblings and members of Blake’s legal team. Blake, a 29-year-old father of six, is now paralyzed from his injuries.

Ben Crump, Blake’s attorney, said in a statement that Blake himself joined the conversation by phone.

“The family was grateful for the meeting and was very impressed that the Bidens were so engaged and willing to really listen,” Crump said. He said that Blake’s mother led the group in prayer, and his father talked about the need for systemic police reform.

“It was very obvious that Vice President Biden cared, as he extended to Jacob Jr. a sense of humanity, treating him as a person worthy of consideration and prayer,” Crump said.

Donald Trump didn’t meet with Jacob Blake’s family in Wisconsin because they asked to have a lawyer involved which Trump called “inappropriate.” Biden clearly didn’t have a problem with having a lawyer “involved.” Biden later met with community leaders to talk on addressing issues of racial justice. He also denounced recent rioting and looting which has taken place while speaking with a business owner whose store was damaged during the unrest. “Protesting is protesting, it’s a right, as my friend John Lewis would say. But that does not include looting, burning or anything else,” Biden said. If you watch anything today, please watch the first video posted below. Just watch and listen.

With Park Sex On The Rise, Council Cracks Down On Cruising

(photo by Gauthier Pierre via Pexels)
The Council of Southwark, located in a southern borough of London, has secured an injunction to help combat shenanigans in Burgess Park after neighbors have complained of rising public sex acts and more during the coronavirus health threat. The Southwark News recently reported that gay and bisexual men have increasingly been seen in secluded areas of the park cruising for – and having – sex. The newspaper included one episode where a mother and her children came across three men caught in mid-sex act at 8am. Burgess Park is apparently known as a popular area for men to cruise, but it seems the current COVID-19 crisis is what brought the issue to light as there have also been unlicensed raves with loud live music lasting until 3am. With the coronavirus pandemic shutting down many clubs and nighttime venues, illegal raves have begun to spring up in the middle of the night. Neighbors have not only complained about the noise but an enormous amount of trash including condoms and tissues found in the park. As a result, Southwark Council’s new injunction will ban amplified music, lighting equipment, marquees, gatherings of more than 20 people after 9pm, sexual activity, carrying weapons and violent behavior. In an announcement, Southwark Council wrote, “If people refuse to do as they ask, inline with the seven terms of the injunction, they will be found in breach of a court order and in contempt of court.  This could result in a fine, and up to two years in prison.” The injunction went into effect on August 28 and will last for one year. Gay Star News reports some cruisers grousing about the new efforts to hamper getting handsy. “Why don’t people just be decent and clean up after f**king and none of this would of happened,” wrote one commenter. “This has been brought on by a few affecting as all.” And another: “If people don’t start showing more consideration when cruising, there’ll be no cruising grounds left.” Get a room, guys… (source: Southwark News, Gay Star News)

Facebook Announces Steps To Stop Election Misinformation

In a CBS This Morning interview, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks with Gayle King about new measures the social media company is taking before the November election. Among other measures, Facebook promises to flag – or in some cases, remove – misinformation about voting related to the coronavirus. Zuckerberg also announced Facebook will not accept new political ads in the final week before the presidential election and will squash attempts by candidates who claim false victories by sending users to accurate voter returns on the results.

New Jobless Claims Drop…But With A Caveat

The U.S. Labor Department reports new applications for unemployment benefits dropped below 1 million last week as 881,000 Americans applied for state unemployment benefits. However… The Labor Department also announced a change in the way it adjusts claims data to account for seasonal variation in an effort to make future reports more accurate. But factoring the change means the previous week is not an apples-to-apples comparison. Minus the seasonal adjustment, state unemployment claims rose by more than 7,500. Unemployment still remains very high by historical standards. NPR reports that as of August 15, more than 29 million Americans were collecting some form of unemployment insurance.

100 Top Republicans Endorse Biden For President

Former Vice President Joe Biden (image via Instagram)
Via Reuters:

Nearly 100 Republican and independent leaders will endorse Democrat Joe Biden for president on Thursday, including one-time 2020 Republican presidential candidate Bill Weld and the former Republican governors of Michigan and New Jersey, people involved in the effort told Reuters.

The latest Republican-led effort to oppose the re-election of President Donald Trump also includes current and former Republicans in the key battleground state of Michigan that will help decide the outcome of the Nov. 3 election, the group’s members said.

Called ‘Republicans and Independents for Biden’, the group is headed by Christine Todd Whitman, a former Republican governor of New Jersey who has become one of Trump’s fiercest critics and who spoke at the recent Democratic National Convention in support of Biden.

While the group’s members come from all over the country, it’s notable that a fifth are from Michigan, where Trump barely eked out a win of less than a percentage point in 2016.

Polls: Biden Still Leads In Battleground States Post-Conventions

As I often say here on The Randy Report, national polls aren’t much use to the casual political observer because a survey can be skewed with folks in New York or California (where we know the state will go for a Democrat) or Alabama or Kentucky (where we know those electoral votes will go for Trump). If there are a huge number of double-digit leads in national polls, that suggests a certain mood across the nation. Post-national conventions, here’s the latest round-up of polling averages in battleground states where the presidential election will actually be won or lost.

In addition to the above, Quinnipiac University just released a new poll showing Biden with an 8 point lead in Pennsylvania – a must-win state for the Trumpster.

Trump Tells His Followers To Vote Twice

While in North Carolina yesterday, Trump suggested his supporters should commit voter fraud by attempting to vote both by mail and in person. Speaking with a local reporter, Trump said, “Let them send it in and let them go vote, and if their system’s as good as they say it is, then obviously they won’t be able to vote. If it isn’t tabulated, they’ll be able to vote… If it’s as good as they say it is, then obviously they won’t be able to vote. If it isn’t tabulated, they’ll be able to vote. So that’s the way it is. And that’s what they should do.” Voting by mail and then voting in person is exactly the kind of fraud Trump keeps screaming about and yet he’s telling his supporters to do that. I see what he thinks he means in trying to ‘test the system,’ but if any of his followers were to vote by mail and then cast a vote in person, it would be a felony. The White House walked that back today saying Trump never said what he said. White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told Fox News this morning a bold face lie when she said “Democrats want a fraudulent system of voting.” No Democrat has ever called for such thing.

• Washington Blade: Openly gay Mayor Alex Morse of Holyoke fell short in his attempt to unseat longtime Congressman Richard Neal. In the weeks leading up to the primary, Morse became the target of an ugly, homophobic smear campaign. • New York Times: Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, will travel Thursday to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to visit a city still reeling from the Aug. 23 police shooting of a Black man, Jacob Blake. The Bidens will be meeting with Mr. Blake’s father and other family members during the trip. During Donald Trump’s recent visit, the president did not mention Mr. Blake, who was paralyzed in the shooting, or speak with his family. • New Music: Out artist Michael Fairman’s music video for “Other Side” depicts some of the biggest social issues of 2020 including the Covid-19 pandemic, the call to stomp out systemic racism, domestic violence, LGBTQ equality, and the rights of the disabled. A new artist to me, Fairman’s packing some serious vocals (and biceps) here.
