Netflix Cancels ‘BOOTS’ After One Season

Bad news – Netflix has cancelled its critically-acclaimed military-centered dramedy, BOOTS. after just one season.

The series, which followed a closeted teen who enrolled with his best buddy in the Marine Corps in 1990, was based on a memoir — The Pink Marine by real-life veteran Greg Cope White. Miles Heizer played the lead role of “Cameron Cope.”

BOOTS premiered on Netflix at the start of October and quickly rose to #2 on the weekly Netflix rankings and stayed in the top ten for a month. The show currently enjoys a 90% critics rating and 90% audience reaction on Rotten Tomatoes.

After such a strong showing, fans’ hopes were high that a second season would be forthcoming.

The first season of the show ends with Cameron Cope and his fellow recruits graduating from boot camp and becoming Marines. The final moments feature a news report announcing the invasion of Kuwait, signaling the beginning of the Gulf War and the reality of potential combat for the new Marines.

White’s memoir covers his entire six-year enlistment in the Marine Corps, which includes his time at Camp Lejeune, Officer Candidates School, and beyond boot camp.

The creative team and cast have expressed interest in a second season to explore the characters’ lives during the actual war and subsequent years, which would delve deeper into the events described in the book.

But – some say an “ideological accusation” from the Pentagon probably contributed to the BOOT’s demise. A week after the series premiered, Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson slammed Netflix for creating “woke garbage” and spreading an “ideological agenda.”

One commenter on Deadline wrote, “Why does this feel like another capitulation to Tr*mp, especially since Netflix needs regulatory approval to purchase WB,” referring to Netflix’s plans to acquire Warner Bros.

Boo on that. I really enjoyed the show. The dramatic tension in each episode was palatable, and the performances across the board were very strong.

At least we have Season One. #sigh
