Furthering the Trump administration’s attacks on transgender Americans, the Department of Health and Human Services is prepping new policies that would effectively ban gender-affirming care for minors.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in a press conference today signed a declaration that says “sex-rejecting procedures are neither safe nor effective treatment for children with gender dysphoria.”
Apparently the new catch phrase for Sec. Brainworm is “sex-rejecting procedures.”
From The Hill:
One rule would prohibit Medicaid from covering any medical care provided to transgender patients younger than age 18 and prohibit reimbursements through CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) for gender-affirming care for patients under 19.
The second rule would block all Medicaid and Medicare funding for any services at hospitals that provide pediatric gender-affirming care.
Virtually every hospital in the country relies on Medicare funding, so the rule would have a wide-ranging impact and could likely make gender-affirming care inaccessible nationwide. Medicare and Medicaid account for nearly 45 percent of spending on hospital care.
Gender-affirming care includes a range of social, psychological, behavioral and medical interventions designed to support a person in affirming their gender identity.
Every major medical group supports gender-affirming care including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Psychiatric Association.
The regulatory actions aren’t final at this point as the federal government is required to go through a lengthy administrative process that includes periods of public comment and document changes before becoming permanent.
Trust and believe there will be legal challenges.
