White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced today The Kennedy Center board had “unanimously” voted to rename the performing arts venue the “Trump-Kennedy Center.”
The board’s effort will likely hit legal hurdles — the name of the building is set by law and requires an act of Congress to change the name.
From Axios:
Roma Daravi, the Kennedy Center’s vice president of public relations, said in a statement provided to Axios that the Board of Trustees voted to name the institution “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.”
The board is likely to see legal pushback to any attempt to unilaterally rename it.
The statutes governing the center’s creation state that “no additional memorials or plaques in the nature of memorials shall be designated or installed in the public areas of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.”
The Kennedy Center is not just a building. It’s a living memorial designated by Congress to be in honor of one president and one president only. And only Congress could change the name.
But engaging in illegal activity is par for the course with the Trump administration.

Perhaps the board isn’t aware that the Kennedy Center is memorial to the president of the United States, John F. Kennedy. Would they rename the Lincoln memorial? The Jefferson? That would be an insult to great presidents. This too is an insult to a great president.… pic.twitter.com/Wtu00hIh0X

(2/2) President Kennedy proudly stood for justice, peace, equality, dignity, diversity, and compassion for those who suffer. President Trump stands in opposition to these values, and his name should not be placed alongside President Kennedy’s.https://t.co/oQREUpbZ8F
