An anti-trans MAGA state lawmaker in South Carolina – who helped create his state’s Freedom Caucus, a group of the House’s most conservative members – has agreed to plead guilty to distributing child sexual abuse material.
In June, he was charged with 10 counts of distributing child sexual abuse material.
The Republican, who resigned earlier this year, is accused of using “joebidennnn69” to exchange 220 different files of toddlers and young children involved in sex acts. https://t.co/5LiJUz77S2

More from Newsweek:
RJ May, 38, signed court papers Friday to change his plea just weeks before his trial was set to begin.
Prosecutors say May exchanged more than 200 explicit files of toddlers and young children on the Kik social media app during several days in spring 2024.
May resigned from the South Carolina House of Representatives last month.
He faces up to 20 years in prison on each of five counts, must register as a sex offender and could be fined up to $250,000.
Prosecutors say May often used the screen name “joebidennnn69” while distributing the child sexual abuse materials.
Of course, the irony here is that May loved to rail against transgender people as a threat to children. Because…of course. #projection
Not a Drag Queen, not a trans woman .. #Republican politician#RJMay told the House in January 2024 regarding transgender issues and children: “We as legislators have an obligation to ensure that our children have no harm done to them”
Oh the delicious irony. pic.twitter.com/JJx58eUM2K— Josi using my voice (@Twosidesofacoin) June 13, 2025
