LGBTQ Mental Health Crisis Center Calls Surge + More News

Some news items you might have missed: • The Advocate: The Rainbow Youth Project, an LGBTQ mental health crisis center, reported over 1,400 calls to its national hotline by early afternoon—a surge that coincided with Trump’s inauguration and the anti-LGBTQ+ policies he outlined.

Reuters: Nearly 1,660 Afghans approved by the U.S. government to resettle in the U.S. are having their flights canceled under Donald Trump’s order – including unaccompanied minors awaiting reunification with their families in the U.S. • AP News: Senator Marco Rubio has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the new Secretary of State by a unanimous vote of 99-0.

Texas Tribune: Longtime Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, daughter of former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, has died after a battle with brain cancer. • White House: Convicted felon Donald Trump has signed full pardons for all January 6 rioters except 14 who received commuted sentences. He also ordered the Justice Department to dismiss all pending J6 cases.

With the exception of 14 people, including Stewart Rhodes and Dominic Pezzola, who received commutations, all other people convicted of Jan. 6, 2021, offenses get a full pardon.

Trump also directs the AG to dismiss all pending indictments, a direct infringement on DOJ independence. [image or embed] — Chris Geidner (@chrisgeidner.bsky.social) January 20, 2025 at 5:17 PM
