Some news items you might have missed: • The Advocate: The White House Correspondents’ Association is scrapping the traditional comedy portion of its annual dinner, marking a departure from a decades-long practice of balancing press freedom with political satire. The WHCA had previously announced that queer comedian and Emmy-nominated writer Amber Ruffin (above) would headline the April 26 event.
• Gr8erDays: Johnny Mathis, out gay singer who is one of the most beloved recording artists of all time, has announced his retirement from live performing at age 89. His last concert will be May 18. • OUT: I realize some folks may be more aware of “Mid-Century Modern” stars Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer, but film/TV veteran Nathan Lee Graham has his own stellar body of work, too. • them: Out actors Ian McKellen and Alan Cumming will return as their Marvel characters “Magneto” and “Nightcrawler” in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. • Texas Tribune: Yes, the measles out break in Texas continues to expand according to state officials. Seventy-three new cases were reported in the last three days, and 41 patients have now been hospitalized. • Washington Post: Meanwhile, the Trump administration has pushed out Peter Marks, the FDA’s top vaccine scientist.
