Philadelphia Transit Strike Threatens Election

In what looks to be a reckless, irresponsible move by the 4,700 workers of Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, the union decided to strike early Tuesday morning affecting nearly one million riders a day.

Plus, being in the middle of early voting and Philadelphia being a huge Democratic stronghold, it could affect the outcome of the election.

From the New York Times:

The authority’s regional rail service — the commuter lines that extend from the city into the suburbs — continued operating, providing an alternative in some parts of the city for riders who would usually take buses or subways. The commuter trains accepted transit passes and express trains made local stops to take on more passengers.

But the regional rail service, which normally provides 130,000 rides a weekday, could absorb only a fraction of the overflow. Trains became crowded and some ran as much as an hour late into the Center City area. The transportation authority warned of possibly dangerous overcrowding on commuter rail platforms during the evening rush.

Members of Transport Workers Union Local 234 had voted to go on strike at midnight if a contract settlement was not reached, and negotiations on Monday failed to produce an agreement. The union last walked out in 2009, in a strike lasting six days.

Campaign Ad: “What He Believes”

A new campaign ad from the Clinton campaign that’s kind of a “greatest hits” of Donald Trump’s offensive comments about women. Again, it’s all in his own voice.

“Putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing.”

“Grab’em by the p—y.”

The spot is set to run in Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Moody’s Analytics Predicts Big Win For Hillary Clinton

Moody’s Analytics, which has correctly predicted the outcome of every presidential race since 1980, says Democrat Hillary Clinton will come out on top come election day.

From CNN:

Clinton is expected to get 332 electoral votes, while Trump is predicted to get just 206, according to the Moody’s Analytics model, which is based on three economic and three political factors.

Overall, the U.S. is growing and that favors Clinton. Most Americans can feel their pocketbooks getting better. Moody’s predicts key swing states — Florida, Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania — all going blue this year.

But here’s what really tips the model heavily toward Clinton: Cheap gas and President Obama’s high approval rating.

“Even those who don’t have a car typically pass a gas station and see prices dropping or falling of a daily basis,” writes Dan White, a senior economist at Moody’s, who worked on the model for the 2016 election.

Gas prices are down, while American incomes and home prices have been rising. At the end of the day, that means a lot of people are better off than they were a few years ago.

The other deciding factor this year is President Obama. Many see Clinton as an extension of President Obama’s policies. Right now, that’s a good thing. His approval rating has surged this year to 55%.

“Historically, no incumbent president since Ronald Reagan in 1988 has had a surge anywhere close to [Obama’s] magnitude in their eighth year in office,” notes White.

The economy and Obama’s rising popularity are likely to make the difference to those coveted few undecided voters, according to the Moody’s model.

For comparison, here’s how other prognosticators see the race for the White House:

Fox News currently sees Hillary Clinton with 287 electoral votes, and that’s not counting winning any “Toss up” states.

From Fox News

Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight website currently indicates Clinton willing with 307 electoral votes.

From Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight

Huffington Post Poll Tracker sees Clinton with a 6 point lead over Trump, 48.2% vs. 42% respectively.

And the New York Times Upshot thinks Clinton has an 88% chance of winning the White House:

Campaign Manager Ducks Questions About Trump’s Upcoming Rape Trial

Donald Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway refused to discuss her candidate’s upcoming child rape case during an appearance on CNBC.

CNBC host Andrew Ross Sorkin brought up Trump’s threat to throw Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in jail over her ongoing email kerfulle if he’s elected, but also noted Trump’s own legal scandals.

Trump is scheduled to begin a court case in December in which a woman has accused him of raping her when she was 13 years old.

From Rawstory:

“My understanding is that no matter who wins, we’re going to be dealing with the email issue after this if she’s the president,” he explained. “If Donald Trump is the president, he’s got the child rape case that’s going to happen that was just given a date.”

“Oh, come on,” Conway gasped. “That you would analogize the two. Give me a break.”

“I’m just suggesting that no matter who is in the White House,” Sorkin continued before being interrupted.

“Next you are going to ask me where his taxes are,” Conway quipped, rolling her eyes.

I’m unclear as to why Conway thinks a charge of rape is an unimportant matter. The Trump campaign keeps carping about “possible” charges against Hillary Clinton, but Trump is the one who’s actually going to trial.

New Poll Shows Latest FBI Announcement Having No Effect On White House Race

More polling info indicates the recent letter from FBI Director James Comey to Congress about possible new emails “pertinent” to Hillary Clinton aren’t affecting the presidential race.

From NBC News:

The NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking Poll showed Clinton with a 6-point lead over Trump in the days prior to the Comey news.

When looking at the data for Saturday and Sunday only, her lead remained the same — 47 percent to Trump’s 41 percent. The poll was conducted online from October 24 through October 30. Questions about Comey’s announcement were included on October 29 and October 30.

Results for the entire week of the tracking poll show that in a four-way match-up, Clinton enjoys 47 percent support among likely voters, while Trump holds onto 41 percent support. Gary Johnson drops a single point to 6 percent support, and Jill Stein has 3 percent support. In a two-way race, Clinton enjoys a 7-point lead over Trump, with 51 percent support compared to Trump’s 44 percent.

Bolding is mine.

Poll: Comey’s Email Announcement Shows Little Impact On White House Race

The latest Politico/Morning Consult poll show Democrat Hillary Clinton leading Republican Donald Trump 46% to 43% in a two-way race, and 42% to 39% in a four-way race, with Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson at 7% and the Green Party’s Jill Stein at 5%.

The poll was conducted after FBI Director James Comey announced the discovery of new emails that might pertain to the former secretary of state’s private server using an online panel of 1,772 likely voters on Saturday and Sunday, beginning one day after Comey’s announcement.

CNN Cuts Ties To DNC Chair Donna Brazile

DNC chair Donna Brazile

CNN has severed all ties with DNC chair Donna Brazile after the latest WikiLeaks email dump seems to show Brazile sharing debate questions with the Clinton campaign.

CNN says it is “completely uncomfortable” in continuing with Brazile as a political contributor in light of the hacked emails, and as such, Brazile has resigned her position with CNN.

Via Politico:

Hacked emails posted by WikiLeaks show Brazile, whose CNN contract was suspended when she became interim DNC chair over the summer, sharing with the Clinton campaign a question that would be posed to Hillary Clinton before the March CNN Democratic debate in Flint, and sharing with the campaign a possible question prior to a CNN town hall also in March.

In a statement, CNN spokeswoman Lauren Pratapas said that on Oct. 14, the network accepted Brazile’s resignation.

“On October 14th, CNN accepted Donna Brazile’s resignation as a CNN contributor. (Her deal had previously been suspended in July when she became the interim head of the DNC.) CNN never gave Brazile access to any questions, prep material, attendee list, background information or meetings in advance of a town hall or debate. We are completely uncomfortable with what we have learned about her interactions with the Clinton campaign while she was a CNN contributor,” Pratapas said.

A CNN employee, speaking on background, suggested Brazile may have met the woman who was supposed to pose the question about lead poisoning during a service event planned the day before the debate.

Nevada: Democratic Voters Lead In Early Voting By 34K

As of this Halloween morning, registered Democratic voters showing up at the polls lead registered Republicans by 34,186, according to the Nevada Secretary of State website.

Washoe County, considered a bellwether, shows Dems with 2,500 lead, which is almost twice what it was in 2012.

From Nevada political expert Jon Ralston:

Dems are up 15 points in Clark (it was 16 in 2012), which is a point above registration, and that firewall is going to get to 60,000-plus, unless something strange happens. I repeat: Trump appears to have no path here, but the Senate race is not quite over yet.

Statewide turnout is now 31 percent of all voters — Democrats are at 34.6 percent, Republicans at 33.9 percent and others at 23 percent. The Republicans actually have a slight turnout lead in Clark — 34.9 percent to 34.3 percent, showing why that 142,000 Democratic registration lead matters. The Democratic turnout edge in Washoe is nearly 4 points (37-33).
