Trans Candidate Makes History Winning Democratic Nomination For Virginia House Race

Danica Roem

Last night, Danica Roem made history as the first trans person to win a Virginia state legislative primary and could be the nation’s first out trans state lawmaker.

From The Advocate:

Danica Roem has won the Democratic primary for the Virginia House of Delegates’ 13th District, making her the first out transgender candidate to win a Virginia state legislative primary and giving her a chance to be the nation’s only out trans legislator, if she can beat one of the most anti-LGBT lawmakers anywhere.

Roem today bested three other Democrats, and in November she will face Republican Bob Marshall, who has represented the district for 25 years and is known as “Bigot Bob” and “Sideshow Bob” for his extreme anti-LGBT stances and other far-right positions. The district is centered on Prince William County in northern Virginia, not far from Washington, D.C.

Roem told The Advocate she will fight for “transportation, not discrimination,” as the district sorely needs improvements to its highways and expansion of mass transit. Her other priorities include jobs and education, but Marshall, she said, has been focused on proposing anti-LGBT legislation. Just this year, he introduced a “bathroom bill” that would not only prevent transgender students from using the restrooms that match their gender identity, but require teachers to out trans kids to their parents. He used the debunked argument that in the absence of such a measure, men would pretend to be transgender prey on women in restrooms.

He also led the movement to block a gay prosecutor from a judgeship in Virginia, saying a gay person would not be “temperamentally suited” to the job; that gay people shouldn’t serve in the military because they might have HIV; and that if a woman has an abortion, “nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” making them more likely to have disabilities.

The election will be held November 7.

Out Music: Scout Durwood “Take One Thing Off”

Out comedian/actress/singer Scout Durwood describes her new music video, “Take One Thing Off,” as “the same balance of controlled chaos I like to have onstage.”

“We wanted something colorful, queer and just left of center,” she added.

The song is the title track from her new 19-track pop-comedy album that intermingles a hysterical standup set taped at the underground Los Angeles club The Pack with songs.

“Take One Thing Off” flaunts an upbeat and undeniable chant over a propulsive musical backdrop.

“In reference to accessories, Coco Chanel said, ‘Before you leave the house, take one thing off’,” Durwood says. “I’m such a believer in public nudity and loving your body that it’s the idea of taking off one expectation people have of you. The record is taking that one thing off.”

The album is now available on iTunes and other digital download sites.

Sen. Bernie Sanders Denounces Shooting Attack On Congress Members

Sen. Bernie Sanders

According to reports, the alleged shooter in this morning’s attack on a Congressional baseball practice, that left five injured including Republican Congressman Steve Scalise, was apparently a volunteer for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign last year.

Sen. Sanders immediately issued a statement denouncing the violence.

Via press release:

“I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign.

“I am sickened by this despicable act. Let me be as clear as I can be. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms.

“Real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values.

“My hopes and prayers are that Representative Scalise, congressional staff and the Capitol Police Officers who were wounded make a quick and full recovery. I also want to thank the Capitol Police for their heroic actions to prevent further harm.”

Paul Ryan: “An Attack On One Of Us Is An Attack On All Of Us”

While some, like Donald Trump Jr., immediately jumped to politicize this morning’s shooting at a Congressional baseball practice, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan stood on the floor of the House this morning calling for unity saying, “An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.”

Congressman Steve Scalise, Staffer And Capitol Hill Police Officers Shot At Baseball Practice For Charity Game

From CNN:

Rep. Steve Scalise, a congressional staffer and members of the congressional police force were shot Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia, in what sources are calling an apparent “deliberate attack.”

President Donald Trump said the gunman had been killed. Federal law enforcement sources identified the shooter as James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois. Hodgkinson is 66.

Scalise, the third ranking member of House Republican leadership as the majority whip, appeared to have been shot in the hip and it appeared two Capitol Hill police agents were shot, Rep. Mo Brooks told CNN. A congressional staffer was also injured. Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods who sometimes practices with the team, was also identified as one of the victims, and Sen. Jeff Flake said Mika was the most seriously injured.

As of 9:45 a.m. ET, Scalise was in stable condition but undergoing surgery, according to a statement from his office.

The shooting took place at a practice for the GOP congressional baseball team. According to both congressional and law enforcement sources, the shooting appears to be a “deliberate attack.”

According to Rep. Eric Swalwell, the charity baseball game will continue as scheduled.

For those who may not know, the game has been played annually since 1909. The event benefits the Washington Boys And Girls Club and other DC charities. Last year the game raised over $500,000.

To date, Republican and Democrats are tied with 39 wins each.

Speaking to Andy Cohen on SiriusXM’s “Radio Andy,” Arrow/Teen Wolf star Colton Haynes candidly shared personal details about his dating life including losing his virginity at the age of 13 to both a girl and a guy, albeit separately, and being set up on fake dates in Hollywood to hide his sexuality.

• “I lost my virginity at 13 to a girl and a guy. I’ve never said that before. The girl was two years older than me, and the guy was, I would say, around 16. Everyone participated. It was a real first time. It was exciting.”

• “I was literally told from the day that I moved to Los Angeles that I could not be gay because I wouldn’t work. Then I was with my management team and a team of people that just literally told me I couldn’t be this way. They tried to set me up with girls. I was rumored to date Lauren Conrad (of The Hills) for six months because they were kind of angling a story. And then I dated every other young person which of course I didn’t date.”

Haynes said his “dates” all understood what was going on. “They knew the whole time. It was like a Tab Hunter situation.”

• “There were two worlds. The world in America, and the world I was seeing [in Iraq]. I wanted people to see what I was seeing.”

In Case You’re Wondering How Sessions Testimony Is Going

This clip pretty much sums up Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee thus far…

I saved the best for last.

Sen. Kamala Harris of California, after watching Sessions refuse to answer questions without any legal basis to refuse, asked him to explain:. I’ll note that Sen. Jon McCain interrupts Sen. Harris during the clip. The only senator interrupted by another senator was the one woman of color on the committee. #ShePersisted
