Australia: Sydney To Offer Free Wedding Facilities For 100 Days Should Marriage Equality Pass

Should the “Yes” votes in the current postal survey regarding marriage equality carry the majority, and IF the Australian government then fulfills its promise of legalizing same-sex marriage, the city of Sydney will allow gay couples free use of prominent parks and buildings for 100 days to celebrate new same-sex marriages.

From the Sydney Morning Herald:

A motion passed on Monday night will allow same-sex couples to hire community facilities, halls and parks for free for 100 days if same-sex marriage is legalised following the postal survey.

The offer will only be available for same-sex weddings, but existing bookings for straight couples will not be cancelled or moved to accommodate the expected influx.

Gay couples will still need to pick up the tab for audio visual services, catering and security, but will be able to hire facilities such as Paddington Town Hall free of charge.

However, Liberal councillor Christine Forster – who is gay and has taken a leading role in the “yes” campaign – voted against the motion after unsuccessfully trying to make it apply to straight couples as well.

Georgia State Rep. Says HIV “Quarantine” Comment Was Meant To Be “Provocative And Rhetorical”

Georgia state Rep. Betty Price

Georgia state Rep. Betty Price caused an uproar this week when, during a study committee hearing, she suggested that HIV+ people should be quarantined since they aren’t dying as “readily” as they used to.

The full quote:

“I don’t want to say the quarantine word, but I guess I just said it. Is there an ability, since I would guess that public dollars are expended heavily in prophylaxis and treatment of this condition? So we have a public interest in curtailing the spread. What would you advise or are there any methods legally that we could do that would curtail the spread?”

“It seems to me it’s almost frightening, the number of people who are living that are potentially carriers. Well they are carriers, with the potential to spread, whereas in the past they died more readily and then at that point they are not posing a risk. So we’ve got a huge population posing a risk if they are not in treatment.”

On Saturday, Price walked her comments back saying she was “taken completely out of context.”

She issued a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution which read, in part:

I made a provocative and rhetorical comment as part of a free-flowing conversation which has been taken completely out of context. I do not support a quarantine in this public health challenge and dilemma of undertreated HIV patients. I do, however, wish to light a fire under all of us with responsibility in the public health arena – a fire that will result in resolve and commitment to ensure that all of our fellow citizens with HIV will receive, and adhere to, a treatment regimen that will enhance their quality of life and protect the health of the public.

You’ll recall Price’s husband recently stepped down as Health and Human Services Secretary after it was revealed he spent over $500,000 in private planes during his short tenure.

Presidential Approval: October Of First Year

A new CNN poll shows Donald Trump has the lowest approval rating of any president in modern history.

At a dismal 37%, Trump ranks at the bottom of the last ten presidents.

Predictably, George W. Bush, in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, was soaring at 88%.

Obama notched a 55% approval rating as the nation was just beginning to see action after the economic crash of 2009.

Fox News Renewed Host Bill O’Reilly’s Contract One Month After His $32 Million Harassment Settlement

Bill O’Reilly

Just six months after Fox News head Roger Ailes was ejected from his lofty position at the conservative news network, prime-time host Bill O’Reilly agreed to pay a $32 million settlement to a network analyst over new sexual harassment allegations.

That’s $32 million to one person.

According to The New York Times, Fox News was aware of the woman’s complaints.

This was at least the sixth such agreement O’Reilly or the network had agreed to in order to quell such allegations against O’Reilly.

One month later the network renewed O’Reilly’s contract to the tune of $100 million over four years.

The obvious question remains: why was O’Reilly allowed to remain in the workplace after so many expensive settlements?

Daily Dance: Noah Galvin “Boyfriend” From THE REAL O’NEALS

My longtime friend Fred Tallaksen is nominated for a World Choreography Award for his work on ABC’s The Real O’Neals last season.

The awards are on Monday, thinking good thoughts Fred’s way!

Fred was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his terpsichorean contributions.

Very proud of him. Watch one of his uber-cute numbers featuring Noah Galvin, who will soon take over the lead in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway.

When Kenny (Noah Galvin) finally gets a boyfriend, he’s worried that his family won’t react well. What better way to cope with all of these emotions than to break out into song and dance?

25th Anniversary Of Madonna’s “Erotica” & “Sex”

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Madonna’s Erotica album and the controversial companion coffee table book, Sex.

Barry Walters has penned an expansive exploration into the material that was considered provocative even for Madonna at the time, calling the artist “unapologetically bacchanalian.”

Walters also connects the dots between the releases and social culture at the time as the AIDS epidemic was at it’s peak.

To say she pushed boundaries across multiple landscapes – music, sexuality, fashion – would be one of the great understatments in pop culture.

Here’s just a bit from Walter’s excellent piece for Rolling Stone:

In 1990, Madonna was as astronomically popular as a boundary-bulldozing, unapologetically bacchanalian performance artist could get. Drawing from Harlem drag balls, “Vogue” went Number One nearly worldwide. The tour showcasing it, Blond Ambition, mixed spectacle with social commentary so sharply that it reinvented the pop concert and yielded the smash documentary Truth or Dare. And that year’s The Immaculate Collection, her first greatest-hits set, would eventually rank among the world’s biggest-ever albums, despite MTV banning its gender-blurring and cinematically exquisite “Justify My Love” video.

Nearly everything changed two years later with Erotica and Sex. Released respectively on October 20th and 21st, 1992, the first fruits of her multimedia Maverick entertainment company weren’t flops; her fifth studio album, Erotica racked up six million sales worldwide and yielded several hits, while Sex – an elaborate coffee table book created with fashion photographer Steven Meisel and Fabien Baron of Harper’s Bazaar – sold out its limited 1.5 million printing in a few days, an unparalleled success for a $50 photography folio bound in metal and sealed in a Mylar bag to evoke condoms. It remains one of the most in-demand out-of-print publications of all time.

[snip]

As her stardom snowballed through the Eighties and early Nineties, AIDS decimated the scene that helped birth Madonna. Taking music and fashion cues from lower Manhattan’s punk rebelliousness and midtown’s disco hedonism, pre-stardom Madonna was a fixture in the bohemian underground chronicled by photographer Nan Goldin in her autobiographical The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, a likely Sex influence, along with the severe stylization of Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin and Robert Mapplethorpe.

By 1992, AIDS claimed Goldin’s subjects, Mapplethorpe himself, much of the art world (including Madonna’s friend Keith Haring), and a growing chunk of Madonna’s audience. It also killed and would go on to kill her cohorts, including Blond Ambition dancer Gabriel Trupin. Just as racism and the Black Lives Matter movement shaped Beyoncé’s Lemonade, AIDS and ACT UP – the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, the direct action advocacy and educational group whose motto was “Silence = Death” – yielded Erotica and Sex.

[snip]

Sex and Erotica’s greatest contribution remains their embrace of the Other, which in this case means queerness, blackness, third-wave feminism, exhibitionism and kink. Madonna took what was marginalized at the worst of the AIDS epidemic, placed it in an emancipated context, and shoved it into the mainstream for all to see and hear.

“Justify My Love,” which many felt was a precursor for Erotica, completely landed for me. It was fresh and provocative as only Madge could be in that time. I actually liked “Justify” more than most of Erotica.

My favorite tracks from Erotica were the more mainstream pop “Rain” and disco-infused “Deeper and Deeper.”

Hillary Clinton On “The Graham Norton Show”

Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton made the trip across the pond to chat with premiere talk show host Graham Norton about her exploits of the past year including the presidential election, attending Trump’s inauguration (which George W. Bush reportedly called “some weird shit”), the catharsis of writing her memoir, What Happened and more.

In this clip, Hillary talks about how she thought about “getting out” of going to Trump’s inauguration as well as her disappointment that the Trumpster didn’t rise to the occasion.

Later, Graham asked Hillary what her thoughts were on Trump’s preference to tweet complex ideas (that’s assuming Trump has complex ideas) to his followers.

Here’s the whole show:
