Broadway Stars Ben Platt & Patti LuPone Deliver Powerful Performances At 2018 Grammy Awards

Patti LuPone delivers stunning “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”
at 2018 Grammy Awards

Last night’s Grammy Awards included tributes to Broadway legends Andrew Lloyd Webber and Leonard Bernstein performed by Tony Award winners Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) and the one and only Patti Lupone (Evita).

Platt delivered a stirring “Somewhere” from Bernstein’s West Side Story, but it was LuPone’s electrifying “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” from the original Broadway production of Evita in 1979 (a true diva who can still deliver like a boss 39 years later) that stunned the Grammy audience.

LuPone quickly began trending on Twitter.

It was also a big night for Platt as the Dear Evan Hansen cast recording took home the 2018 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, moving Platt to the halfway mark to EGOT status ― that is, winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

Watch both performances below.

Two-time Tony Award winner Donna Murphy chimed in with praise as well:

Hillary Clinton Makes Cameo Appearance At Grammys, Triggered Conservatives Heads Explode

In a skit during last night’s Grammy Awards, several celebrities “auditioned” to the be the narrator’s voice for an upcoming audio book version of Michael Wolff’s explosive #1 best-seller, Fire and Fury: Inside The Trump White House.

Cher, John Legend and Snoop Dogg were among the hopefuls, but it was a cameo by Hillary Clinton that triggered a lot of snowflake conservatives.

“One reason why he liked to eat at McDonald’s,” Clinton reads from the book, “nobody knew he was coming and the food was safely premade.”

And the crowd goes wild…

Viral: Kooky Bookstore Customer’s Lesson In Kindness

I came across this story on Facebook which has gone viral and had to share.

Growing up, I watched my father do things like this. It makes me smile to be reminded of that.

Posted by Christine Turel:

I work in a decent sized, local, indie bookstore. It’s a great job 99% of the time and a lot of our customers are pretty neat people. Any who, middle of the day this little old lady comes up. She’s lovably kooky. She effuses how much she loves the store and how she wishes she could spend more time in it but her husband is waiting in the car ‘OH! I BETTER BUY HIM SOME CHOCOLATE!’ She piles a bunch of art supplies on the counter and then stops and tells me how my bangs are beautiful and remind her of the ocean (‘Wooooosh’ she says, making a wave gesture with her hand.

Ok. I think to myself. Awesomely happy, weird little old ladies are my favorite kind of customer. They’re thrilled about everything and they’re comfortably bananas. I can have a good time with this one. So we chat and it’s nice.

Then this kid, who’s been up my counter a few times to gather his school textbooks, comes up in line behind her (we’re connected to a major university in the city so we have a lot of harried students pass through). She turns around to him and, out of nowhere, demands that he put his textbooks on the counter. He’s confused but she explains that she’s going to buy his textbooks.

He goes sheetrock white. He refuses and adamantly insists that she can’t do that. It’s like, $400 worth of textbooks. She, this tiny old woman, boldly takes them out of his hands, throws them on the counter and turns to me with an intense stare and tells me to put them on her bill. The kid at this point is practically in tears. He’s confused and shocked and grateful. Then she turns to him and says ‘you need chocolate.’ She starts grabbing handfuls of chocolates and putting them in her pile.

He keeps asking her ‘why are you doing this?’ She responds ‘Do you like Harry Potter?’ and throws a copy of the new Cursed Child on the pile too.

Finally she’s done and I ring her up for a crazy amount of money. She pays and asks me to please give the kid a few bags for his stuff. While I’m bagging up her merchandise the kid hugs her. We’re both telling her how amazing she is and what an awesome thing she’s done. She turns to both of us and says probably one of the most profound, unscripted things I’ve ever had someone say:

‘It’s important to be kind. You can’t know all the times that you’ve hurt people in tiny, significant ways. It’s easy to be cruel without meaning to be. There’s nothing you can do about that. But you can choose to be kind. Be kind.’

The kid thanks her again and leaves. I tell her again how awesome she is. She’s staring out the door after him and says to me: ‘My son is a homeless meth addict. I don’t know what I did. I see that boy and I see the man my son could have been if someone had chosen to be kind to him at just the right time.’

I’ve bagged up all her stuff and at this point am super awkward and feel like I should say something but I don’t know what. Then she turns to me and says: ‘I wish I could have bangs like that but my darn hair is just too curly.’ And leaves. And that is the story of the best customer I’ve ever had. Be kind to somebody today.

Sunday Chill Time

Loved the quick trip on Atlantis Cruise with Olivia: awesome few days aboard the Harmony of the Seas, but those were some long travel days there and back.

Since we joined cruise after initial departure, we had to be first off in Ft Lauderdale for immigration reasons. That meant a 5:30am call to disembark.

That gave me an 8-hour layover in Fort Lauderdale. Thanks to my buddy Chad for the chat and nap space before getting on to my 8-hour fly time home to Las Vegas.

It was sweet that one of my fellow Atlantis cruisers approached me at the airport to say he’d seen me on the ship and thought I was handsome but was too shy to say so.

He found his courage at my gate and I was really touched. Nice guy who lives in London and just wanted to finally say ‘hi.’ That was a cool postscript to the adventure.

And meeting Randy Report reader Devon on the ship was a highlight as well 🙂

Enjoying some chill time in my favorite space in the world. Bruno the wonder dog keeps wandering over to see if I have any food (nope), but I’m happy to have his company.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. #morewine #dogsrule #exhale

Straight Guy Looks To Tinder To Find Super Bowl Housing

I’m curious as to how Randy Report readers think this should go.

With the upcoming Super Bowl game happening in Minneapolis, housing options for incoming fans have astronomical rates.

So one guy – a straight guy – hit up a gay man in Minneapolis via dating app Tinder. Not for a date or sex, but to barter for a place to sleep.

“Dude, I need to be straight up with you. I’m not gay. I’m going to be in Minneapolis for the Super Bowl and I can’t afford to stay in a hotel.”

“So I’m searching for someone cool enough to let a friend and I crash on their couch. We’re willing to buy you alcohol. Cook you dinner. Shovel your driveway. Whatever is reasonable, we got you.”

“Obviously you want to know me a little better before you let a stranger in your house. My name is Eli, I like football, music, and sushi. I dislike spicy food, bad vibes, and people who leave their shopping carts in the middle of the parking lot.”

“Please help me out with this act of kindness. I promise to pay it forward.”

What would you do? Help the guy out? It sound like it’d be a kind of AirBNB situation.

Or is it not kosher for a straight guy to use a dating app for housing?

Thoughts?

Jesse J Soars On Whitney Houston Cover “I Have Nothing”

British pop-star Jesse J is the first international invited to participate in Chinese singer competition, Singer.

The show is much like American Idol but with established singers competing instead of unknown hopefuls.

Jesse J knocked it out of the park this past week with a cover of Whitney Houston’s hit song, “I Have Nothing” from her film, The Bodyguard.

Watch Jesse as her soaring vocals and exquisite phrasing more than live up to the daunting task of covering Miss Whitney.

You have to wonder why she’s not a bigger star with all this going on.

Watch below.

Jesse J’s first performance in the competition was a fiery, commanding take on “Domino.”

Scott Baio Accused Of Sexual Molestation By 80s Sitcom “Charles In Charge” Co-Star Nicole Eggert

Nicole Eggert, who was a child star on the 80s sitcom Charles in Charge has accused her co-star, prominent Donald Trump supporter Scott Baio, of sexual molestation during the run of the show.

According to Eggert, the alleged multiple incidents occurred during the time she was 14 to 17-years-old.

Adam Carl, an actor who appeared on the TV show at the time, says he remembers Eggert crying to him about the alleged assaults. His statement could serve as contemporaneous corroboration of her accusations.

Renee Baio, Scott’s wife, attempted to defend her man on Twitter:

The actor-turned-reality-star took to Facebook to deny the accusations saying in part, “I’m here today to talk about some allegations that have been made against me that aren’t true by somebody named Nicole Eggert. The reason I’m doing Facebook Live is because nobody can edit me, nobody can change what I said. These are my words. And what I’m telling you is the truth.”

Baio continued, “I’m going to knock down all these false claims against me. My reputation is being damaged. My family is being put through this and I’m done. I’m done. So, I’m going to walk you through this methodically and hopefully succinctly and please be patient because what I’m being accused of is horrible. I’m being accused of inappropriately touching her when she was a minor, and having sex with her when she was a minor….”

Baio did admit that once Eggert turned 18, he did have consensual sexual relations with her, but it was instigated by Eggert, not him.

“Now, any normal, heterosexual, red-blooded, American guy… the outcome would have been the same, the same thing would have happened,” said Baio. “She seduced me. She came in the house and started kissing me.”

Baio, whio is 57-years-old now, would have been about 26-year-old when the alleged abuse began.

Eggert posted additional tweets in response to questions on Twitter, but later deleted them.

Trump Slaps Back At Jay-Z For “Superbug” Racist Label

President Trump slapped back at rapper Jay-Z after the music icon described the Trumpster as a racist “superbug.”

From The New York Daily News:

The “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” rapper blasted Trump a day earlier for allegedly referring to Haiti and some African nations as “shithole countries” during a meeting on immigration.

“Everyone feels anger, but after the anger it’s really hurtful because he’s looking down on a whole population of people and he’s so misinformed because these places have beautiful people,” he told CNN’s “The Van Jones Show” in an interview that aired Saturday.

Trump allegedly made the comments to a group of senators during a meeting earlier this month to fix the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

“You don’t take the trash out,” he said during his CNN interview. “You keep spraying whatever over it to make it acceptable and then, you know, as those things grow, then you create a superbug.”

“And then now we have Donald Trump, the superbug.”

But he then took a softer tone on his fellow New York native, saying the President “is a human being, too.”

“Somewhere along his lineage, something happened to him,” he said. “And he’s in pain and he’s expressing it in this sort of way.”

In an attempt to punch back at Jay-Z, Trump tweeted, “Somebody please inform Jay-Z that because of my policies, Black Unemployment has just been reported to be at the LOWEST RATE EVER RECORDED!”

Van Jones had asked Jay-Z about the black unemployment figures and whether or not more jobs made up for the hurtful Trump rhetoric aimed at blacks.

Jay-Z said no “because it’s not about money at the end of the day. Money doesn’t equate to happiness. It doesn’t. That’s missing the whole point.”

While it is true that unemployment for black Americans, currently at 6.8%, is at the lowest rate in many years, it’s disingenuous for Trump to take all the credit.

The unemployment numbers for black Americans has steadily declined since early 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s years before Trump arrived at the White House.

Gus Kenworthy Agrees With US Figure Skater Adam Rippon On VP Mike Pence’s Olympic Role

Gus Kenworthy qualifies for 2018 Winter Olympics

Out Olympic athlete Gus Kenworthy has responded to fellow Team USA Olympian, figure skater Adam Rippon, who recently questioned the wisdom of Vice President Pence leading the Olympic delagation into the 2018 Winter Games.

Pence has a notoriously anti-LGBT history as governor of Indiana and a congressman.

From LGBTQ Nation:

“I actually found out about it from Adam Rippon’s quote about it,” he told USA Today. “I feel the same way as him. I think it’s not the person I would have expected, and I think it sends mixed messages because this is the first time we’re seeing out U.S. Olympic athletes competing in the Winter Olympics, and then we have someone leading the delegation that doesn’t support that, and doesn’t support the LGBT community, and has spoken against it. I think it doesn’t send the right message. It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is.”

“I think that I’ve gotten to live authentically and share who I really am with my family and friends. It’s made me feel so comfortable,” he said. “I think that it’s showcased in my skiing. I feel so free and liberated and it’s one last thing I have to think about, about being in the closet and worrying about outing myself. My skiing has benefited from that, from being free.”

“The fact that I am out, I think it’s going to warrant me having a better time in Korea, and really getting to experience it,” he added. “When you’re in the closet, you can’t enjoy anything quite as much. I don’t think I had the Olympics experience I was hoping for, and now that I’m out, I’m going to really take it all in and have such a better time.”

Kenworthy has become the face of gay US Olympians having come out in 2015 after winning a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Games.

He will be competing in his second Olympic games in slopestyle skiing.
