Trump Administration Is Methodically Dismantling LGBT Protections

During the 2016 election cycle, Donald Trump promised he would be “better for the gays” than Hillary Clinton.

Instead, his health department is slowly but surely rolling back efforts to protect LGBT patients.

From Politico:

The nation’s health department is taking steps to dismantle LGBT health initiatives, as political appointees have halted or rolled back regulations intended to protect LGBT workers and patients, removed LGBT-friendly language from documents and reassigned the senior adviser dedicated to LGBT health.

The sharp reversal from Obama-era policies carries implications for a population that’s been historically vulnerable to discrimination in health care settings, say LGBT health advocates. A Health Affairs study last year found that many LGBT individuals have less access to care than heterosexuals; in a Harvard-Robert Wood Johnson-NPR survey one in six LGBT individuals reported experiencing discrimination from doctors or at a clinic.

The Trump administration soon after taking office also moved to change the agency’s LGBT-related health data collection, a window into health status and discrimination. Last month it established a new religious liberty division to defend health workers who have religious objections to treating LGBT patients.

The changes at the Department of Health and Human Services represent “rapid destruction of so much of the progress on LGBT health,” said Kellan Baker, a researcher at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health who worked with HHS on LGBT issues for nearly a decade. “It’s only a matter of time before all the gains made under the Obama administration are reversed under the Trump administration, for purposes that have nothing to do with public health and have everything to do with politics.”

Politico breaks down all the various steps the Trump administration is against LGBTs.

White House Lies: “The President Hasn’t Said That Russia Didn’t Meddle”

Proving that the White House staff lives in a bizarro/other dimension where up is down and down is up, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders denied that Donald Trump ever said Russia didn’t meddle in the 2016 presidential election.

Sanders told reporters at today’s press briefing:

“One of the places where you guys seem to get very confused––and it seems to happen regularly––the President hasn’t said that Russian didn’t meddle. What he’s saying is it didn’t have an impact and it certainly wasn’t with help from the Trump campaign. It’s also very clear that Russia meddled in the election. It’s also very clear it didn’t have an impact on the election, and it’s also very clear the Trump campaign didn’t collude with the Russians in any way.”

Adam Rippon & Leslie Jones Win Gold For Figure Skating Commentary

Leslie Jones and Adam Rippon

Olympic bronze medalist Adam Rippon and Saturday Night Live‘s Leslie Jones dropped by the NBC Olympic studio last night to help out with some additional commentary alongside Scott Hamilton on gold medalist Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir’s free dance.

You may recall NBC Sports flew Jones to Rio in the middle of the 2016 Summer Olympics when her Twitter commentary took over the Twitterverse.

And, of course, we know NBC Sports had hoped Rippon would join their team for the remainder of the PyeongChang games as a correspondent, but the charming Rippon decided against taking the offer choosing to remain an Olympian and marching in the closing ceremonies.

Via Twitter, Rippon shared: “I am flattered that NBC wanted me to work as a correspondent for them here in PyeongChang. Doing this would require me to leave Team USA and move out of the Olympic Village. I don’t want to do that so I had to declined the opportunity.”

He added, “I love being on Team USA and representing our country. My teammates were there for me during my events, and now I NEED to be there for them. I look forward to being with them, and I’m very excited for the rest of the competition. Go Team USA!!!”

But at least we got a taste of what could have been 🙂

Donald Trump Orders Ban On “Bump Stocks”

President Trump says he’s signed a memorandum directing Attorney General Sessions to propose regulations to ban “all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns.”

From The New York Times:

President Trump ordered the Justice Department on Tuesday to propose regulations to ban so-called bump stocks, which can convert a semiautomatic gun into an automatic weapon like the one used last year in the massacre of concertgoers in Las Vegas.

Speaking at the White House days after a mass shooting at a Florida high school that killed 14 students and three teachers, Mr. Trump said that he had directed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to develop the regulations, saying that the step would help prevent future mass shootings.

The White House had said last year that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was performing a review of whether it could regulate bump stocks after the shooting in Las Vegas, which killed dozens of people. Even as Mr. Trump was speaking on Tuesday, a bureau official told a reporter that the review was continuing.

But the president said that he had signed a memorandum on Tuesday effectively short-circuiting that review.

Georgia Senate Committee Approves Anti-LGBTQ Adoption Bill

A Georgia state Senate committee has approved an anti-LGBTQ bill that would allow adoption agencies to refuse to place children with same-sex couples based on “sincerely-held religious beliefs.”

The legislation would also keep the Georgia Department of Human Services from taking any “adverse action” against such agencies who chose to discriminate against LGBTs.

Senate Bill 375, also known as the “Keep Faith in Adoption and Foster Care Act,” passed in the Georgia Senate Judiciary Committee this morning on a party line vote. Only the two Democrats voted against the measure.

There were no public comments allowed during the committee meeting and the bill now head to the Senate floor for a vote.

Jeff Graham, Georgia Equality’s Executive Director, issued this statement:

“There are no winners with SB 375. This bill does not help the thousands of young people in our state’s adoption and foster care system. It does not help loving parents who are looking to open their homes to children in need, either through fostering or adoption.

“It does not help our state’s economic image – particularly at this crucial juncture in our bid to bring up to 50,000 new and high-paying jobs to our state through Amazon.

“There are only losers with this bill: children denied permanent and loving homes, and potential parents coldly turned away simply because of who they are.”

Gus Kenworthy Dispatches Twitter Troll With 3 Words

Gus Kenworthy

Out U.S. Winter Olympian Gus Kenworthy has little patience for online trolls.

As Kenworthy celebrated his now-famous Olympic kiss with bf Matthew Wilkas, a Twitter user (with the same name as a Trump lawyer) chimed in with an ugly comment.

The troll asked: “Question is, if men marry men and women marry women who will produce children in this world”

Kenworthy destroyed the hater with three simple words:

“Hopefully not you.”

On-Again Off-Again Trump/Romney Bromance Is Back On

Well, what can you say about the on-again, off-again, on-again bromance between Donald Trump and Mitt Romney?

Less than two years ago, Mitt Romney called then-presidential candidate Trump a “fraud” and a “con artist.”

Trump labeled Romney a “choke artist” for his failure to win the 2012 presidential election.

Eventually, Trump won the 2016 election and Romney came crawling back in hopes of becoming Secretary of State.

But it turned out Trump was just punking Romney.

Now, as Romney announces his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring Orrin Hatch of Utah, Romney and the Trumpeter are buds once again.

Check out the tweets from last night from these crazy kids.

And just for giggles, let’s take a trip on the way-back machine to March 2016 when Romney felt the need to give a huge speech wherein he called Trump “a fraud.”

Watch below.
