Arizona: Civil unions law passes in Bisbee

The town of Bisbee, Arizona, has approved a new version of a civil union law for same-sex couples by a vote of 5-2.

In April, council members approved an earlier version of the measure that sought to give people in civil unions the same benefits as those in marriages.

But city officials decided to rewrite the measure after Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne threatened to sue over provisions that Horne said were in conflict with state law or went beyond the city’s authority.

Horne’s office said he approves of Bisbee’s new version of the ordinance and won’t sue to try to block it.

Other cities in Arizona, including Tempe, say they are considering similar civil union laws.

Esther Williams dead at 91

Aquatic Hollywood star Esther Williams is dead at 91.

Having set multiple national and regional swimming records in her late teens as part of the Los Angeles Athletic Club swim team. Unable to compete in the 1940 Summer Olympics because of the outbreak of World War II, she turned to the entertainment industry. Williams made a series of films in the 1940s and early 1950s known as “aquamusicals”, which featured elaborate performances with synchronized swimming and diving.  Williams was one of the biggest grossing Hollywood stars of her time.

Following her retirement from film in the 1960s, Williams became a businesswoman, lent her name to water-related companies, and served as a commentator for synchronized swimming at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

From the AP:

Williams’ publicist Harlan Boll says she died early Thursday in her sleep.

Williams became one of Hollywood’s biggest moneymakers in the 1940s and ’50s, appearing in spectacular swimsuit numbers that capitalized on her wholesome beauty and perfect figure. Such films as “Easy to Wed,” ”Neptune’s Daughter” and “Dangerous When Wet” followed the same formula: romance, music, a bit of comedy and a flimsy plot that provided excuses to get Esther into the water.

A recent analysis by the state Department of Management and Budget estimated that 5,000 Minnesota gay couples would get married in the first year under the new law.

NJ Gov. Christie names state Attorney to interim US Senate seat

Gov. Chris Christie today named state attorney general Jeffrey Chiesa to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the death of U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

Christie’s announcement ended days of intense speculation over whom the Republican governor would appoint to serve nearly five months before voters elect a replacement for the 89-year-old Lautenberg, who died Monday.

New Jersey voters haven’t sent a Republican to the Senate in four decades.

Bloomberg Poll: 52% of Americans support marriage equality

Fifty-two percent of Americans say they back giving gay couples the right to marry, compared with 41 percent who are opposed, according to a Bloomberg National Poll conducted May 31-June 3.

Of those supporters, more than half — 61 percent — want a national law rather than a state-by-state approach.
