The White House is scrambling following the deadly shooting of intensive care nurse Alex Pretti this weekend in Minneapolis.
Donald Trump says he is sending “border czar” and former ICE director Tom Homan (above) to Minnesota to manage Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations on the ground.
Gregory Bovino has been demoted from his role as Border Patrol “commander at large” and will return to his former job in El Centro, California, where he is expected to retire soon, according to a DHS official.
A White House official told CNN Trump spent several hours on Sunday and Monday watching TV coverage of the shooting and was unhappy with how his administration was coming across.

More via the Washington Post:
In an apparent thawing of tensions, Trump and Gov. Tim Walz (D) had a “good” phone call and discussed working together, Trump said Monday.
Walz’s office said the call was “productive” and that Trump told Walz he will talk to the Department of Homeland Security about ensuring state investigators can conduct an independent investigation into the shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti and look into reducing federal agents in the state.
The Trump administration continued to face criticism on the shooting of Pretti and its response, including pushback from some Republicans.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said Monday on his podcast that the administration should be “more measured” in describing the killing of Pretti and other incidents.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said in a radio interview that the White House should “recalibrate” its immigration enforcement.
You may recall Homan was accused of accepting a $50,000 cash bribe from undercover FBI agents in September 2024 to steer government contracts. Allegations include that he was recorded taking the cash in a takeout bag. Homan has denied the allegations.
In related news, a top U.S. Customs and Border Protection official said today that the Border Patrol agents involved in the confrontation that led to the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti were wearing body cameras.
The body-camera footage could provide insight into what occurred in the moments leading up to the shooting.
What I’d like to know is: where is – and who has – Alex Pretti’s cell phone which appears to have been recording when the event occurred?
