This is the latest action taken by the Trump administration to restrict trans veterans’ access to services, acknowledgment, and assistance. The VA will not provide gender-affirming care to veterans who are not currently receiving it. While the department has never included gender-affirming surgeries in its offerings, it did cover treatments such as hormone therapy. Additionally, while the VA used to supply support letters for gender-affirming surgeries performed by non-VA medical professionals, this service will also be terminated. Last week, the VA rescinded Directive 1341, which directed healthcare providers to treat trans vets with dignity: use pronouns veterans preferred, directed facilities to allow veterans to use bathrooms and be assigned rooms in accordance with their self-identified gender. According to estimates from the Veterans Health Administration, less than 0.1% of the 9.1 million veterans receiving care from the VA are transgender.
