Trump Signs Exec Order Targeting Transgender Military Members

Donald Trump has issued an executive order targeting transgender service members declaring the U.S. military has been “afflicted with radical gender ideology to appease activists” and that “many mental and physical health conditions are incompatible with active duty.” The order also attacks transgender people in personal terms saying being trans is incompatible with “an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle.” This is where I note that there are thousands of military trans people who have served admirably for decades.

More from NBC News:

“It is the policy of the United States Government to establish high standards for troop readiness, lethality, cohesion, honesty, humility, uniformity, and integrity,” the order states.

“This policy is inconsistent with the medical, surgical, and mental health constraints on individuals with gender dysphoria. This policy is also inconsistent with shifting pronoun usage or use of pronouns that inaccurately reflect an individual’s sex.”

The order mandates that the Defense Department update its military medical standards within 60 days, promptly “end invented and identification-based pronoun usage” and prohibit people assigned male at birth from using women’s sleeping, changing and bathing facilities.

The order will take time to implement, so transgender service members will not be immediately ejected.

It’s unclear what will happen to service members who are receiving transition-related care through Tricare, the military’s health care program.

In July of 2017, Trump surprised American military leaders and the world when he announced his plan to ban trans military service members after “consultation with my Generals and military experts” due to the “tremendous medical costs and disruption” of transgender service members. A 2016 RAND Corporation study, found there were (at the time) an estimated 1,320 to 6,630 transgender individuals out of the 1.3 million service members on active duty. You can read the new executive order here.

NEW: On Monday evening, President Donald Trump took direct aim at nondiscrimination and diversity in the military in a pair of executive orders that include a discriminatory provision declaring transgender people unfit for military service.

HRC and @lambdalegal.bsky.social will sue the Trump administration to stop their cruel and dangerous trans military ban. Let’s prioritize our servicemembers and their families while keeping our nation safe. See you in court, President Trump.
