Donald Trump on Monday promised the government would pay out $2,000 tariff dividend checks starting around mid-2026.
Trump has suggested the idea several times in the past, but never stated an actual timetable on the payments.
BREAKING: Trump promises $2,000 tariff checks by mid-2026 https://t.co/tr3azylnGg

In remarks to reporters in the Oval Office today, Trump said, “We’re going to be issuing dividends later on, somewhere prior to, you know, probably the middle of next year, a little bit later than that. Thousands of dollars for individuals of moderate income, middle income.”
It’s worth noting, however, the potential cost of such a tariff payout could be enormous.
IF such checks were issued for individual low/middle income U.S. citizens (not per household), that could cost $200+ billion.
That would be more than the government collected in tariff revenue in fiscal 2025, and about half of what the government is currently pacing to collect in fiscal 2026.
Such payments would require legislative action by Congress, and political observers aren’t sure lawmakers would be up for authorizing spending on that level approaching mid-term elections.
