Trump May Withdraw Todd Blanche Nom For Attorney General

Donald Trump said today he may withdraw his nomination of Todd Blanche as attorney general due to lack of support on a vital Senate committee.

The Senate Judiciary Committee postponed a critical committee vote for Blanche’s confirmation today over the demands of Republican Sens. John Cornyn and Thom Tillis.

Trump says he could nominate Blanche again after the two lame-duck Republican holdouts leave office next year.

From the New York Times:

Trump’s threat, posted on social media, followed 24 hours of frenetic and fruitless negotiations among Mr. Blanche, the White House and the two senators, John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who are not returning to Congress next year.

Senator Thom Tillis criticized Trump’s recalcitrant posture toward the I.R.S. settlement.

“This is not popular,” he said. “The president’s not winning on this issue. It is killing some of our candidates because they can’t explain it. And now it looks like they weren’t being honest when they said it was inoperative.”

Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, backed up Senator John Cornyn’s assertion that he and Senator Thom Tillis were not the only ones concerned about the I.R.S. settlement agreement.
