Today we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), recognized each year on November 20 that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. The Human Rights Campaign reports at least 47 transgender and gender non-conforming people were victims of violent homicides in 2021 so far. And there are 6 weeks left in the year. That surpasses the record set in 2020 of 44 deaths. https://twitter.com/HRC/status/1462105464955719681 Angel Naira, a 36-year old Black trans woman from Pennsylvania was shot to death in her home on November 11, 2021, becoming the 47th trans casualty on record in 2021. While each case is unique in its circumstances, what is clear is the epidemic disproportionately impacts Black transgender women, who comprise 66% of all victims of fatal violence against transgender and gender non-conforming people. https://twitter.com/HRC/status/1462062171962048519 TDOR began in 1999 as a way to honor Rita Hester, a trans woman murdered inside her Boston apartment in 1998. Additionally, the week before TDOR, people and organizations around the country participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help raise visibility for transgender people and address issues the community faces. President-elect Joe Biden issued a statement today which read, in part, “Transgender people are some of the bravest Americans I know. But no person should have to be brave just to live in safety and dignity.” Earlier this year, President Biden issued the first proclamation recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility in March.
“Transgender people are some of the bravest Americans I know. But no person should have to be brave just to live in safety and dignity,” @POTUS said to mark #TDOR. #LGBTQ https://t.co/JYMOkEabun

It’s Transgender Day of Remembrance #TDOR. We remember trans folks we have lost to violence this year. Their lives mattered, still matter. 2021 has become the deadliest year on record for trans people in the United States surpassing last year’s record numbers. pic.twitter.com/fK9QsPNp5q
