Alabama’s Largest Newspaper: Reject Roy Moore, Vote For Doug Jones

Alabama’s largest newspaper endorses Democrat Doug Jones over embattled Roy Moore.

An excerpt from the editorial board at AL.com:

How can we look our neighbors, our parishioners, our colleagues, our partners, or our children in the eyes and tell them they are worth less than ensuring one political party keeps a Senate seat? How can we expect young Alabamians to have faith in their government or their church, when its leaders equivocate on matters as clear cut as sexual abuse?

A vote for Roy Moore sends the worst kind of message to Alabamians struggling with abuse: “if you ever do tell your story, Alabama won’t believe you.”

Or, worse, we’ll believe you but we just won’t care.

To be clear: it’s not only his record on women and children that disqualifies Moore. If we vote for Roy Moore, Alabama will also show that we don’t care about you if you’re gay or Muslim or Catholic. If you’re an atheist or an immigrant. We’ll show each other that we only care about Roy Moore’s definition of Alabama. And that there’s not room for the rest of us.

[snip]

What is disqualifying is the conduct of Roy Moore against women and children. It was disqualifying for his party leaders. It was disqualifying for Alabama’s senior senator. And it should be disqualifying for his state party.

By the various misdeeds, miscalculations and mistakes of its voters and leaders, Alabama has left itself with few options. Alabamians must show themselves to be people of principle, reject Roy Moore and all that he stands for.

There is only one candidate left in this race who has proven worthy of the task of representing Alabama. He is Doug Jones.

For a deep red state like Alabama, this is pretty stunning stuff. I highly recommend you read the entire editorial.

Roy Moore’s Lawyer Says MSNBC Host’s “Background” Should Help Him Understand Dating Underage Girls

More amateur hour antics from the Roy Moore team.

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Velshi & Ruhle” this morning, Moore’s lawyer Trenton Garmon tried to defend his client from allegations of sexual misconduct with young girls by bringing up the “background” of Ali Velshi.

Things went off the rails as Ruhle asked, “Why would [Moore] he need permission from any of these girls’ mothers if they weren’t underage?”

“That’s a good question. Culturally speaking, I would say there’s differences. I looked up Ali’s background there,” said Garmon. “Wow. That’s awesome, that you have got such a diverse background. It was cool to read through that.”

The two hosts were obviously perplexed by the odd segue.

“What does Ali’s background have to do with dating a 14-year-old?” Ruhle inquired.

Garmon never really got to any kind of salient point, but for the record: Velshi was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and raised in Toronto, Canada.

Alabama: Fake Robocalls Offer “Reward” For Dirt On Roy Moore

Folks in Alabama began receiving fake robocalls from a “Bernie Bernstein” claiming to be a reporter from the Washington Post offering to pay $5-7,000 for “damaging remarks” about embattled GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore:

“Hi, this is Bernie Bernstein, I’m a reporter for the Washington Post calling to find out if anyone at this address is a female between the ages of 54 to 57 years old willing to make damaging remarks about candidate Roy Moore for a reward of between $5000 and $7000 dollars. We will not be fully investigating these claims however we will make a written report. I can be reached by email at albernstein@washingtonpost.com, thank you.”

Because how much more east coast/Jewish can you sound than “Bernie Bernstein?”

And do you like that last part stating, “We will not be fully investigating these claims…”

Total bush league move.

The Washington Post issued a statement:

“The Post has just learned that at least one person in Alabama has received a call from someone falsely claiming to be from The Washington Post. The call’s description of our reporting methods bears no relationship to reality. We are shocked and appalled that anyone would stoop to this level to discredit real journalism.”

Roy Moore Feels “Harassed,” Mitch McConnell Promises Expulsion, Sean Hannity Backtracks After Losing Advertisers

Roy Moore

The twisted, sordid tale of Roy Moore, twice removed from office as Alabama Supreme Court Justice and currently the GOP nominee for U.S. Senate, has not been a smooth ride of late.

After several women have come forward accusing Moore of sexual misconduct in the late 70s/early 80s, over a dozen folks in Alabama have spoken out saying they remember him being “banned” from the local mall for allegedly trolling for teen girls to date.

The attention is hurting Moore’s poll numbers and he’s now complaining that he’s being “harassed” by the media.

Speaking of the media, Fox News’ Sean Hannity learned the hard way that folks don’t like to see alleged child molesters defended.

After standing up for Moore last week, which was perceived as attacking the women who came forward, Hannity’s advertisers began jumping ship in a big way. So much so that last night, Hannity reversed course regarding Moore saying the Alabama judge has “24 hours to prove he didn’t sexually assault teenage girls.”

And finally, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has not only called for Moore to “step aside” in his race for the Senate, he’s now promised to begin expulsion proceedings should Moore win his Senate race.

From Politico:

It’s an outcome that senior Republicans say privately is all but unavoidable after the embattled Senate hopeful was accused of sexual misconduct, including with a 14-year-old girl. The former Alabama Supreme Court justice is refusing to leave the race.

McConnell initially outlined his thinking at his weekly leadership meeting earlier this week. The Kentucky Republican said if Moore is elected, he expects a senator to file an ethics complaint against Moore, according to multiple sources. That process would eventually lead to a vote on expelling him.

Paul Ryan: Roy Moore Should Step Aside “If He Cares About The Values He Claims To Care About”

Paul Ryan

Republican leaders have made it clear they are done with Alabama Republican Roy Moore.

First, it was Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell who dropped the “if true” phrase from his denunciations of Moore.

And then this morning, in the aftermath of a fifth woman coming forward with allegations of sexual impropriety regarding Moore, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan definitively told reporters Moore should stand down as the GOP nominee for U.S. Senate in Alabama.

“He should step aside,” Ryan said during the press conference. “Number one, these allegations are credible. Number two, if he cares about the values and people that he claims to care about, then he should step aside.”

More Republicans Are Abandoning Roy Moore As Another Accuser Comes Forward

Republican Roy Moore

More and more Republican Senators are running away from Alabama Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters, “I believe the women,” when it comes to the allegations of sexual misconduct by Moore.

It’s also come to light that Moore was “banned” from one shopping mall as he became well-known for looking for “high school dates.”

And to make matters worse, another woman came forward today accusing Moore of attacking her when she was 16-year-old, and it looks like he clearly knew her as he signed her year book.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell On Roy Moore Sexual Misconduct Allegations: “I Believe The Women”

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters today, “I believe the women,” when it comes to the allegations of sexual misconduct by Roy Moore in his 30s.

McConnell also said he thinks Moore should “step aside” when it comes to the Alabama race for U.S. Senate. The Senate Majority leader says Republicans are exploring the possibility of an effective “write-in” candidate for the Alabama seat.

In related news, attorney Gloria Allred has announced a press conference for later today where she says she will appear with a woman who has new claims of sexual misconduct by Roy Moore.
