Sen. Rand Paul eases rhetoric on same-sex marriage

Clearly Sen. Rand Paul is attempting to get his ducks in a row for a 2016 presidential run. Note his statement here softening his position on gay marriage to Vocativ:

“I think that the Republican Party, in order to get bigger, will have to agree to disagree on social issues.

“The Republican Party is not going to give up on having quite a few people who do believe in traditional marriage. But the Republican Party also has to find a place for young people and others who don’t want to be festooned by those issues.

“On issues that are very contentious, that involve social mores — I think that allowing different parts of the country to make their decision based on the local mores and culture is a good idea.

“But when it comes to taxes and benefits, the [federal] government ought to take a neutral position — a way where marriage wouldn’t have an effect, positive or negative, on those things.”

And the far right-wing is already mad…

• Out singer/songwriter and current “It” boy Steve Grand’s Kickstarter campaign passes the $200K mark.  He was looking for $81K.  And he has two more weeks to go…

• Questions are raised about Lady Gaga’s  Born This Way Foundation as news comes that only $5K in grants were given out.  Gaga’s mom defends the Foundation saying it isn’t built to dole out money.

• A Houston man arrested in the murder of his daughter and her girlfriend was reportedly “not happy” about the couple’s lesbian relationship

• Looks like another “Obamacare victim” is going to save money under her new, improved health insurance, despite GOP spin.

Sen. Rand Paul column dropped by Washington Times over plagiarism issues

Sen. Rand Paul is having a really bad week over the recent discovery that he likes to “cut and paste” whole sections of text for his columns and books.

But it’s funny – where you get your news could RILLY RILLY give you a different version of the story.

For instance, if you got your news from Breitbart, you might think “Oh!  Sen. Paul decided to move his column elsewhere.”

But if you saw THIS, you’d get the whole story:

Funny how “context” changes in there, no?

Sen. Rand Paul “thinking” about 2016 Presidential run

Sen. Rand Paul has confirmed rumors that he is considering running for president:

“We’ve been thinking about it,” Paul said in a phone interview. “And we will continue to think about it probably until after the 2014 elections. I haven’t made a decision, it’s a big decision you know with regard to family and the extensive travel that’s involved with it. And then also just seeing where the country is going in the next year or two.”

According to a new Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey, Paul leads the pack of potential 2016 GOP candidates in both Iowa and New Hampshire:

18 percent for Sen. Rand Paul
16 percent for Gov. Chris Christie’s 16 percent
15 percent for former Vice Presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan
14 percent for Jeb Bush
11 percent for Sen. Marco Rubio
10 percent for Sen. Ted Cruz
6 percent for Rick Santorum

Sen. Rand Paul fine with “neutral” federal same-sex marriage laws

On Fox News today, Sen. Rand Paul stated that while he supports “traditional marriage” he wouldn’t mind if the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and allowed states for themselves to decide marriage laws.

Said Sen. Paul: “I don’t want the government promoting something I don’t believe in, but I also don’t mind if the government tries to be neutral on the issue.”

Sen. Rand Paul doesn’t “understand” same-sex marriage

Senator Rand Paul was a guest on AFA hate group leader Bryan Fischer’s radio show yesterday. The Senator and Fischer discussed several topics, but what is an interview between two ultra-conservatives without getting into the gays?  So, of course, they eventually found themselves on the topic of marriage equality.

From Raw Story:

“I believe in traditional marriage,” he said during an interview with Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association. “I really don’t understand any other kind of marriage. Between a man and a woman is what I believe in, and I just don’t think it is good for us to change the definition of that.”

Paul noted that his state, Kentucky, had approved a constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex marriage. He said he was “not sure” about DOMA, but warned the federal law could result in conservatives losing “the battle for the whole country.”

Paul said marriage rights should be decided state-by-state rather than nationally so that “urban centers” couldn’t dictate the law.

To be honest, I don’t understand what there is to “understand.” Two people love each other and want to marry and have the same rights, privileges and responsibilities as straight couples.

Plus – if you believe marriage is a “states rights” issue, then you can’t possibly support DOMA. DOMA is a federal law reaching into what you’ve just said is a “states rights” issue.

There. Was that hard?

Son of Sen. Rand Paul arrested on charges of drunk and disorderly

The 19 year-old son of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was arrested at the Charlotte airport yesterday on charges of drunk and disorderly conduct.

William Hilton Paul arrived in Charlotte, N.C., on a U.S. Airways flight from Lexington, Ky., where his father is a U.S. senator. According to Lt. Blake Hollar with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Paul was intoxicated when he arrived at the airport and said “he was possibly served alcohol on the flight.” The teenager was arrested by police and booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail, charged with three misdemeanors: underage consumption, disorderly conduct, and being intoxicated and disruptive. While in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, reports say William Hilton Paul identified himself as the son of Sen. Rand Paul.

The younger Paul, who is a student at the University of Kentucky, was taken into custody shortly after his flight landed around 11AM.

“He was possibly served alcohol on the flight,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Lt. Blake Hollar said.

A spokesperson for Sen. Paul has issued a statement: “Senator Paul is a national public figure and subject to scrutiny in the public arena, however, as many parents with teenagers would understand, his family should be afforded the privacy and respect they deserve in a situation such as this.” Yesterday Sen. Paul acknowledged that he is considering a presidential run in 2016.
