RuPaul To Sashay Across The Country In New Netflix Sitcom “AJ And The Queen”

RuPaul (image via Instagram)

As if perpetually-in-motion RuPaul didn’t have enough on his plate, now we get word that the two-time Emmy Award winner will soon star in a new series for Netflix titled, AJ and the Queen.

Ru will team-up with Michael Patrick King (2 Broke Girls, Sex and the City) for the new original comedy series.

According to Deadline, King and RuPaul will pen the new sitcom which will feature RuPaul as “Ruby Red, a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990’s R/V with her unlikely sidekick AJ, a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 11-year-old stowaway.”

So two misfits – one tall, one small – sashaying across the country, spreading a message of acceptance and love.

Kind of like BJ and the Bear meets Touched by an Angel just with a lot more sass.

Oh, and apparently Mama Ru will perform a killer musical number in all the drag clubs visited.

You better work.

Trailer: Netflix’s New Teen Comedy “Alex Strangelove”

Just as we come off our Love, Simon high, Netflix steps up to the plate with their own take on questioning high schoolers.

In the new coming-of-age film Alex Strangelove, produced by Ben Stiller, we meet way-cute, wide-eyed high school senior “Alex Truelove” (played by Daniel Downey) who seems to have it all.

Life seems pretty sweet for young Alex until his girlfriend (Madeline Weinstein of Beach Rats) begins to pressure him about that major teen milestone – losing his virginity. Suddenly, Alex isn’t so sure about which team he plays for.

Adding to the confusion is “Elliott,” a gay teen (played by out actor Antonio Marziale) who clearly sparks an interest in Alex.

Here’s the official synopsis:

High school senior Alex Truelove (Daniel Doheny) has it all – the grades, the girlfriend (Madeline Weinstein), and the motley crew of hilarious friends. Everything is smooth sailing until Alex shares that he’s decided to part ways with his virginity – and meets Elliott (Antonio Marziale), a sweet and confident gay boy who isn’t shy about his instant crush on Alex…who may or may not feel the same. Rocketed into a endearing and amusing journey of sexual and self-exploration, Alex ultimately learns that like so much of growing up, love can be confusing. And that’s okay.

Director Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) recently told Entertainment Weekly that he’s thrilled the film landed at Netflix, “because you can be a closeted kid in rural Wyoming and access it, where you might not have gone to it were it playing in the theater.”

The film feels very much in the same vein as recent hit Love, Simon, and we couldn’t be happier. More gay rom-coms!

Alex Strangelove premieres on Netflix June 8. Watch the trailer below.

Netflix Announces New 10-Episode Season Of “Tales Of The City”

Netflix has announced a new 10-episode season of the classic queer TV series, Tales of the City, based on the books by Armistead Maupin.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

The streaming giant on Tuesday confirmed the 10-episode sequel to the Showtime/PBS take on the LGBT-themed novel. Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis are confirmed to reprise their roles as Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal, respectively, from the original series. Barbara Garrick also will return as DeDe Halcyon Day.

The Netflix take also has enlisted Ellen Page, who will play Shawna. Lauren Morelli (Orange Is the New Black) has joined the production and will serve as writer and showrunner.

Based on the books by Maupin, Tales of the City follows Mary Ann (Linney), who returns home to San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter (Page) and ex-husband Brian 20 years after leaving them behind to pursue her career.

Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Dukakis) and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane.

Maupin is arguably one of the best-known gay authors in the world. His Tales of the City began as an ongoing serial in the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper during the 1970s. The serial became a novel in 1978 and was followed by 8 sequels published over the past four decades.

Maupin’s novels led to three Tales of the City mini-series for Showtime/PBS starring Linney and Dukakis. Along the way, Tales of the City (1993), More Tales of the City (1998), and Further Tales of the City (2001) garnered a Peabody Award and multiple Emmy Award nominations.

The new 10-episode season is scheduled to begin filming later this year and will debut in 2019.

Netflix’s “Sense8” Finale To Premiere On June 8

Fans of the Netflix sci-fi series Sense8 will get our long-awaited finale movie on June 8!

Squee!!!!!

In making the announcement for the two-hour wrap-up movie, Netflix also unveiled the above graphic for the event.

According to press materials, in the series finale “personal lives are pushed aside as the cluster, their sidekicks and some unexpected allies band together for a rescue mission and BPO take-down in order to protect the future of all Sensates.”

The LGBT-inclusive series (two gay couples plus a transgender principal character) got its closing notice last year after only two seasons. Netflix blamed high costs – apparently $9 million per episode – for the cancellation.

But a fan-driven letter writing campaign swayed the streaming network to give fans a conclusion to the story which saw 8 individuals across the planet suddenly psychically bound to each other.

Check out the newly-released teaser below. See you all on June 8!

That pretty much sums up the wild desert electro-pop romp that is “Batshit.” Check it out below 🙂

Barack & Michelle Obama May Produce New Series For Netflix

(image via Instagram)

Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are reported to be in advanced talks with Netflix to produce a new series of high-profile shows that could explore the former president’s interest in the intersection of politics and media.

From The New York Times:

Under terms of a proposed deal, which is not yet final, Netflix would pay Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, for exclusive content that would be available only on the streaming service, which has nearly 118 million subscribers around the world. The number of episodes and the formats for the shows have not been decided.

Mr. Obama does not intend to use his Netflix shows to directly respond to President Trump or conservative critics, according to people familiar with discussions about the programming. They said the Obamas had talked about producing shows that highlight inspirational stories.

But the Netflix deal, while not a direct answer to Fox News or Breitbart.com, would give Mr. Obama an unfiltered method of communication with the public similar to the audiences he already reaches through social media, with 101 million Twitter followers and 55 million people who have liked his Facebook page.

The Obamas are a hot commodity. In addition Netflix, other media companies like Apple and Amazon have expressed interest in content creation with the former White House residents.

Cosmopolitan invited several hunky U.S. Olympic athletes heading to Pyeongchang for the Winter Games to recite really cheesy pick-up lines as they gave a little peek at their well-toned bodies.

I think out freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy scored the best moment with his line: “I wanted the gold medal in Sochi, but I settled for silver because I want to make sure you come first.” Watch below.

Trailer: Season 2 Of Netflix’s “One Day At A Time” Reboot

I know some folks thought a reimagining of the 70s hit sitcom One Day at a Time might seem like a bad idea, but hubby Michael and I really enjoyed season one of the Netflix reboot.

Starring Justina Machado as a Cuban-American single mother “Penelope” raising her son and daughter with the help of her mother (a scene-stealing Rita Moreno), the new version has a lot of heart. There aren’t many TV shows addressing single mothers of color as the head of a household.

Plus, the end of season one featured the daughter coming out, so there’s definitely some LGBT issues to come in season two.

Check out the trailer for the new season (available now on Netflix) below.
