Tennessee: 51% support marriage equality/civil unions

In 2006, 81% of voters in Tennessee approved a state constitutional amendment defining marriage between one man and one woman as “the only legally recognized marital contract” in the state.

A new poll by Vanderbilt University shows a marked improvement in LGBT rights in the state.

51% of Tennesseans would support  some sort of relationship recognition (32% support marriage equality, 17% support civil unions).

That being said, the state’s constitutional ban remains a big obstacle for LGBT rights advocates for years to come.

LGBT-inclusion will definitely NOT be a part of immigration reform bill

As the current immigration reform legislation was being considered last night by the US Senate Judiciary committee, it became clear that GOP opposition to inclusion of LGBT rights would kill the bill. After months of threats to derail the legislation, last night the Republican senators on the committee made good their promises.

As such, Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the committee said, “I take the Republican sponsors of this important legislation at their word that they will abandon their own efforts if discrimination is removed from our immigration system,” Leahy said. “So, with a heavy heart, and as a result of my conclusion that Republicans will kill this vital legislation if this anti-discrimination amendment is added, I will withhold calling for a vote on it. But I will continue to fight for equality.”

Sen. Leahy asked those who stood against the amendment to add LGBT protections to the bill to address the issue.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) warned that “the bill would fall apart because the coalition would fall apart” if the amendment was adopted. “It would be a bridge too far,” Graham said.

Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake: “It would certainly mean this bill would not move forward.”

The fear of losing the entire bill proved too much for some Democrats on the committee. Senators Feinstein, Durbin and Schumer all expressed their sadness at the lack of LGBT inclusion but said the loss of the full legislation outweighed the amendment.

Said Schumer, “They’ve made it perfectly clear that if this provision is included … they will abandon [the bill.] …  If we make the effort to add it to this bill, they will walk away. … The result: no equality, no immigration bill, everyone loses. … Much as it pains me, I cannot support this amendment if it will bring down the bill.”

The committee voted 13-5 to move the immigration-reform bill for consideration by the full Senate, which is expected to take up the legislation in June.

LGBT advocates were immediately vocal.

Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin: “Instead of working to achieve common-sense solutions, Senators Graham, Flake, McCain and Rubio threatened to derail the entire immigration bill to appease a small but vocal group of anti-gay social conservatives that will do anything to stop progress for lesbian and gay couples. We are extremely disappointed that our allies did not put their anti-LGBT colleagues on the spot and force a vote on the measure that remains popular with the American people.”

Felipe Sousa-Rodriguez, co-director of GetEqual: “Today it became clear that our so-called ‘friends’ don’t have the courage or the spine to stand up for what’s right, and are content to buy into the false choice that Republicans created — holding a sorely-needed immigration bill hostage in order to cement inequality into law.”

Lack of LGBT inclusion in immigration reform leads to outrage by advocates

LGBT advocates are growing increasingly upset as it appears Sen. Chuck Schumer (NY) and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (CA) seem ready to allow LGBT inclusive language to be left out of immigration reform.

From Lavi Soloway at The DOMA PROJECT:

Despite hearing from tens of thousands of constituents in recent weeks, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-New York) and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California) have not budged. They will refuse to vote for either amendment, and as a result, Chairman Senator Patrick Leahy, will likely not call either of his LGBT amendments (the one based on the Uniting American Families Act, which I helped write 14 years ago, or his historic and unexpected Marriage Equality “DOMA Carve Out” exception) for a vote knowing that the amendment will fail to garner the necessary 10 out of 10 Democratic votes to pass out of Committee.

The betrayal of our community by Senator Schumer who voted for DOMA as a member of the House and fought for gay votes when he ran for Senate despite HRC’s controversial endorsement of his incumbent opponent, Republican Alphonse D’Amato, is appalling to put it mildly. After all his promises to fight for LGBT inclusion, he has signaled day after day that he won’t upset the bipartisan Gang of Eight applecart. Dianne Feinstein, who, 35 years ago, became Mayor of San Francisco after the assassination of Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk, has once again failed to provide leadership when the going got tough. Her leadership on the repeal of DOMA (Respect for Marriage Act) notwithstanding, this was the moment that counted. This was the moment that required courage and leadership.

The most vulnerable members of our community relied on Senator Schumer and Senator Feinstein to stand up for us and end decades of catastrophic and irreparable harm to our families caused by DOMA and our exclusion from US immigration law.

Today, it seems clear, they will betray us.

NYC: West Village hosts massive anti-hate crime rally

JoeMyGod reports that the NYPD has closed the streets around the LGBT Community Center in the West Village as a massive crowd prepares to step off and march in honor of murdered gay man, Mark Carson.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and DOMA plaintiff Edie Windsor were spotted at the front of the march.

Wonder what Jesus would say about the current rash of LGBT violence?

Ever wonder what Jesus would say about all this violence?

As folks admonish and attack gays and lesbians verbally, do you think those actions could lead others to escalate to this level?

Attacked, kicked, bones broken, people killed in the streets.  Is this what Jesus would advocate?

In a word: no.

Think about what your words can do, haters.

EU poll shows discrimination and violence targeting LGBT people

A survey of 93,000 Europeans taken by The European Union’s Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) and released to coincide with the International Day Against Homophobia indicates that most LGBT Europeans are living in fear.

Check out the results of the survey in an interactive map.

According to the data collected:

• LGBT people start facing difficulties early at school, where they regularly experience bullying and harassment

• 47% of all respondents felt they had been discriminated against in the year preceding the survey, but 90% of those did NOT report to the authorities

• LGBT people face discrimination in many other walks of life, including work, housing, social services, and in access to goods and services

• LGBT people are frequently victims of hate crime and harassment: About a quarter of all respondents said they had been attacked or threatened with violence in the last five years.

• 2/3’s of the respondents were scared of holding hands in public with their same-sex partner. For gay and bisexual men this rose to about 75%.

• Half of the respondents avoided public places

• 80% were aware of hearing jokes being made about LGBT people

Pennsylvania: 100 state lawmakers introduce important legislation protecting LGBT citizens

100 Pennsylvania lawmakers have introduced legislation in Harrisburg that would offer wide reaching protections to LGBT citizens in the state.

PGH City Paper reports:

A broad group of state lawmakers today introduced bills HB 300/SB300, which would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or expression statewide in employment, housing, credit and public accommodations. And they cited a record high level of support for the measures.

“These identical proposals have a common goal — to end, once and for all, the last vestige of legal discrimination in Pennsylvania based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression,” said state Rep. Dan Frankel (D-Squirrel Hill), a co-sponsor of HB300 with Republican state Rep. Chris Ross, and sponsor of the bill in previous years.

Frankel noted that its the first time the bills have had such broad, bipartisan support, with 77 sponsors in the House and 25 in the Senate.

Pennsylvania’s first openly gay elected lawmaker Brian Sims spoke at the introduction. Check out the video statement above.

Newt Gingrich lies about gay adoption

Serial adulterer Newt Gingrich tried to pass off the usual lie about gay adoption’s “effect” on the Catholic Church on Meet The Press yesterday:

“But what I’m struck with is the one-sidedness of the desire for rights,” he added. “There are no rights for Catholics to have adoption services in Massachusetts. They’re outlawed. There are no rights in DC for Catholics to have adoption service. They’re outlawed.” “This passing reference to religion, we sort of respect religion — sure, as long as you don’t practice it,” Gingrich continued, saying we should go beyond the question of “Are you able to be gay in America?” and ask what it means. Whether that means, for example, eliminating “any institution which does not automatically accept that, and therefore, you’re now going to have a secular state, say, to a wide range of religious groups.”

Also on the panel was Joy-Ann Reid, who rightfully corrected Gingrich noting that Catholic Charities voluntarily withdrew their services rather than comply with anti-discrimination laws. Gay rights have not “eliminated” any religious group. If a group doesn’t wish to follow the law, then they are making their own choice.
