Gays Gone Wild? Fire Island Social Media Posts Go Viral

In this episode of ‘Gays Gone Wild,’ “Fire Island” was trending on Twitter today after several social media posts went viral featuring tons of shirtless gays at shoulder-to-shoulder parties at the gay summer mecca, Fire Island. No masks, no social distancing. Journalist Chris Weidner curated the following posts and reports via Twitter. Among the ‘Covidiots’ is an apparent 23-year-old Giancarlo Kristian Albanese, currency analyst at EverythingFx. It looksl like he was planning on returning to his parents house (where he lives) in White Plains, NY. Except – his mother reportedly if undergoing chemotherapy, and his brother commented on Giancarlo’s post saying he is now unwelcome at home.

And then there’s Corey Hannon who told social media that he had been suffering from COVID-19 for over a week but went to Fire Island anyway.

Hannon later posted an ‘apology’ video which seemed to twist and turn itself in knots. On one hand, he said he never actually tested positive for COVID-19, but he believed he had experienced it. BUT – even though he took a test for the virus, he still headed out to Fire Island to frolic in the sun amid the gays. He ‘apologized’ for the ‘misrepresentation’ of his COVID story and that his video rant was never meant to be posted to his account as it was just ‘bad humor’ intended to be shared among friends. He also denounced so-called ‘cancel culture’ for how his own posts on social media came back to bite him in the ass. First of all, pal, stop posting every second of your life on social media if you don’t want to deal with the ramifications. You’re not that cool. Second, we can’t cancel what hasn’t happened. I’d never heard of Hannon before today. The idea of ‘cancel culture’ is to ‘cancel’ prominent individuals who have abused public trust in having a following. Dude, you ain’t that famous…

Twitter was NOT havin it:

Poof! Gone! What Happened To RuPaul’s Social Media Accounts?

RuPaul (screen capture)
Where in the virtual world has RuPaul gone? Fans noticed on Thursday, the 6-time Emmy Award winner had deactivated his Twitter account (“This account doesn’t exist”) and removed all posts on his Instagram account (“No posts yet”). Just gone. Poof. Shantay-ed away. The move has left many fans feeling confused, with one user tweeting: “Can someone please check on @RuPaul. Mother deleted everything on her Instagram.”

“Why did RuPaul just totally decimate his entire Instagram tho — what is happening?” tweeted another fan. One fan, referencing the recent reports that Ru seemingly admitted to allowing fracking on his Wyoming/South Dakota property, responded asking “Did the oil wells dry up in Wyoming??”

Another posited that the world’s most successful drag queen had been hacked, posting a recorded video showing posts disappearing from Instagram one by one. The fan wrote, “@RuPaul someone is hacking your Instagram and deleting your photos.”

Multiple outlets, including The Randy Report, have reached out to RuPaul’s reps about the deletions but received no comment. Page Six points out that Season 10 Drag Race alum Kameron Michaels also wiped his Instagram account on the same day. But early this morning, Michaels posted a note on the Gram of Insta saying he is ‘fine.’

“There is no stunt. No scandal. No big reveal,” wrote Michaels. “Without going into all the whiney details about my own personal issues, I simply want to start over.” Michaels went on to say he cringed at many of his past posts because he began to tie his self-worth in reality “to that of my online content and I’m erasing that toxic behavior.” He added, “As far as someone else doing the same thing I did, weirdly on the very same day…I have mo idea why they or their team erased their content.” Another coincidence – or not? – the timing of RuPaul’s deletions happened the same day as the debut of Canada’s Drag Race, the 4th iteration of the popular reality series. While Mama Ru’s personal social media pages have been deleted or deactivated, for now, the official RuPaul’s Drag RaceInstagram account remains active, although the most recent post was from June 12. The 5th Season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars is currently airing on VH1.

He Put A Ring On It! Sweet Marriage Proposal Goes Viral

L-R Cody Boykin proposes to Brandon Moss (via Twitter)
You know what never fails to make me smile? Marriage proposals. And since we can use some smiles these days, check out the viral video below of Cody Boykin dropping to one knee and proposing to his boo, Brandon Moss. The couple met online in December of 2017, but not the way you think that sounds like. The two became friends from a random comment on an Instagram post. According to their page on The Knot, they can’t remember who sent the first message, but Brandon and Cody soon became Insta-Friends chatting on the social media platform. But, they didn’t actually meet face to face until March 2019. Brandon phoned at 4 am one Sunday morning and asked Cody if he would come to visit him in Lynchburg, Virginia. Cody wasn’t totally sure, but jumped in his car and off he went. According to the couple, Cody arrived at 7:30 am and it was love at first sight. Since then, they made the long-distance thing work, but five months later, standing at the edge of a lake, Cody realized what his future needed to look like. On bended knee, he asked Brandon to marry him. Amid the tears, a stunned Brandon said ‘yes.’ The nuptials will take place this fall in late October. After the wedding, the newlyweds will live in Raleigh, North Carolina, where Cody currently practices law. Tweeting a quick video clip of ‘the moment,’ Cody wrote, “The day I asked my best friend to marry me.” Congratulations to the happy couple!

Sexy Trans Men Offer Their Own #DontRushChallenge Video

Paulo Batista @ftmmuscle (screen capture)
If you’ve been clicking through Instagram lately you’ve probably come across the latest social media trend – the #DontRushChallenge video. It all began with women sharing videos (set to the song “Don’t Rush”) showing themselves sans makeup/glam, then touching the camera lens whereupon they are revealed in full beat. Ta-dah!!!! Now, a group of transgender men are featured in a new compilation assembled by Instagrammer Lucas Elliot. He and the men in the video recently took part in a fashion show for MarcoMarco underwear. “Got together (digitally) with the FTM boys who walked in NYFW for MarcoMarco and made our version of this silly little Don’t Rush challenge,” wrote Elliot. “I hope you enjoy it as much as we did filming it.” The video uses the song “Aura” by one of the models, Jamie Wilson, and shows the guys making their own spiffy transformations and then tossing (literally) to the next model. Guys in order of appearance: @dezjorngauthier @courtp1453 @yonik_unique @hansongobron @phoenix_montoya @ftmmuscle @tboy61915 @cooltransluke Elliot’s post has been viewed over 12,000 times and when Wilson shared the video it soared to over 163,000 views. The video is very well done and the guys look terrific 🙂

Star Athlete Banks More From Instagram Than His Day Job

Cristiano Ronaldo (image via Instagram)
It sure pays to be popular. And hot. I came across this article about how much Instagram celebrities make from their huge followings. I find the subject fascinating. According to Business Insider, soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo earns more from his Instagram account than he does from playing for his Italian soccer club Juventus. The 34-year-old hottie is the most followed person on Instagram with over 187 million followers. And he puts that fame and celebrity to work. Social media firm Hopper HQ reports that Ronaldo has earned $47.8 million from his 49 sponsored posts on the photo-centric social media platform. That’s more than the reported $34 million a year he earns from his day job. One marketing executive told Hopper HQ, “Companies are paying almost $1 million for posts to access his insane reach.” It also puts him way ahead of other Insta-celebs. Rugby star Leo Messi came in second with $23.3 million in Insta-earnings, followed by reality star Kendall Jenner with $15.9 million. Click over to BuzzBingo to see what famous ‘influencers’ make broken down by category (sports, fashion, travel, entertainment…) and more. Sexually-Fluid Reality Contestant Kicked Off Instagram For Posting The Wrong Pic

Remy Duran, of the sexually-fluid edition of MTV's Are You The One? reality show, got kicked off Instagram after posting a pic with his new girlfriend and a dildo MTV aired the finale of its off-the-wall dating reality show, Are You the One?, on Monday night. The show purports to help contestants find ‘the one’ by the end of the series. In fact, the show’s creators have already determined the perfect match for each contestant through a series of interviews with the participants, friends and family members, and psychological testing. The trick for the contestants is to figure out who that is. (Spoiler coming…) This season’s edition featured an entire cast of sexually-fluid participants. On the finale, hottie Remy Duran announced he and contestant Paige Cole were now a couple. No, they weren’t each other’s predetermined ‘Perfect Match,’ but they were totes in happiness. Until. The couple shared the news on their respective Instagram accounts by posting a pic featuring the duo posting with a dildo hanging from the wall. Just hours later, though, Remy’s entire Insta account was deleted by the powers that be at Instagram. The image is still viewable on his Twitter account. It’s the pink-tinged photo in the montage below.

Speaking to Vice, Remy expressed his frustration saying, “I’m so pissed. I thought, ‘Oh, shit, my picture got taken down,’ but my whole account got deleted without warning. I didn’t get an email. Nothing.” Interestingly, Paige’s post of the image was removed, as well, but her account remains intact and online. Calling the deletion ‘homophobic,’ Paige points to posts that are far more graphic than the couple’s light-hearted photo. “You see car accidents where people probably died, you see photos of animal abuse on popular pages,” Paige shared with Vice. “There are real issues on Instagram, but they have a problem with sex workers. They have a problem with a titty popping out. They have a problem with a gay man and his gay girlfriend posing with a dick on the wall.”  She continued, “We say ‘Homophobia!’ jokingly, but there’s no excuse for deleting his account and not mine for literally posting the same content.” At the end of the day, it’s not just the ‘dang it’ of having one’s account deleted. The hours directly following the finale of AYTO can be crucial for someone like fashion designer-turned-party promoter Remy as the public’s interest is at its peak. Vice reports that Remy has been building his social media brand since 2014 to promote his party-planning business and support both himself and his mother. Remy says before the deletion his account of 49k followers was gaining over 100 new followers every 20 minutes. “I’m sick for him,” Paige tells Vice. “Being on the show has enabled me to be contacted by brands for influencer gigs. I’m hoping to use it to build my modeling career in the entertainment industry because people watching you is worth more than currency. Get the right person watching you, and your whole life can change.”  “We know all the right people are watching us within 24 hours [of AYTO’s season finale], and they can’t even look at Remy,” added Cole. The Community Guidelines for Instagram do specifically ban things like “sexual intercourse,” “genitals,” and “some photos of female nipples.” While it’s not clear why Remy’s account would be shuttered but Paige’s account would get just a slap on the wrist, Remy does admit he’s had two prior violations with the social media giant. Censorship has become a big deal on social media since the March 2018 passage of the bipartisan Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act and Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act in the U.S. Senate. The legislation provides for holding online businesses liable for any content (even if posted by users) that could be viewed as relating to sex work. Colton Haynes Shares On Social Media & Mental Health

Colton Haynes (via Instagram)
Sunday evening, Arrow star Colton Haynes took a different tone on his Instagram account as he addressed how projecting “a curated life” has taken a toll on his mental health. The post, which he labeled ‘Throwback,’ included a collection of selfies from what appear to be past hospital stays. The images are a stark contrast from his Instagram’s usual fare of frolicsome, sunlit beach moments and model-perfect photos. And that would be the point. “I don’t want worrying about if I look hot or not on Instagram to be my legacy,’ penned the 31-year-old. “I don’t want to skirt around the truth to please other people or to gain economic success.” The former Teen Wolf actor shared with his 6.4 million followers that today he feels “immense joy” when someone shares that his “willingness to open up about depression, anxiety, alcoholism, & addiction has helped them in some way.” In March of this year, Haynes openly addressed his struggles with mental health and addiction with Attitude Magazine saying, “In 10 years, there were maybe 25 days I didn’t drink.”

Colton Haynes says worrying whether or not he "looked hot" in Instagram posts was a "complete waste" of time.
(image via Instagram)

He added that he had achieved six months of sobriety at the time. In his recent Instagram post, he admits that while he’s “struggled the past year” with trying to “find his voice,” he regards the journey as “the most beautiful struggle I’ve ever had to go through.” Pointing to his social media accounts, Haynes says he regrets the time he’s spent worrying about “what time to post on social media so I can maximize my likes,” calling those concerns ” a complete waste of why I was put on this earth.” The point of the hospital photos, which he says were taken a year ago, is to “let y’all in on my truth.” Reflecting on what he describes as “dark” times, he offers candidly, “I’m a human being with flaws like you.” He closes the note with a word of encouragement to his fans: “If ur in the middle of the dark times…I promise you it doesn’t have to last forever.” You can read the full Instagram post from Haynes below.

Throwback. I don’t want worrying about if I look hot or not on Instagram to be my legacy. I don’t want to skirt around the truth to please other people or to gain economic success. I have far more important things to say than what magazine I just shot for or what tv show I’m a part of (Although I’m very thankful I still get to do what I love). I no longer want to project a curated life. I get immense joy when someone comes up to me & says that my willingness to open up about depression, anxiety, alcoholism, & addiction has helped them in some way. I’ve struggled the past year with trying to find my voice and where I fit in & that has been the most beautiful struggle I’ve ever had to go through. Worrying about what time to post on social media so I can maximize my likes or being mad at myself that I don’t look the same way I did when I was addicted to pills is a complete waste of why I was put on this earth. I’m posting these photos to let y’all in on my truth. I’m so grateful to be where I am now ( a year after these photos were taken) but man these times were dark. I’m a human being with flaws just like you. If ur in the middle of the dark times…I promise you it doesn’t have to last forever. Love y’all ❤️

The practice of chasing ‘Likes’ on Instagram has become an issue of late as Facebook (which owns Instagram) recently announced the platform is currently running a test in seven countries where ‘Likes’ will no longer be visible to followers. Instagram says it wants viewers to “focus on the photos and videos you share, not how many likes they get.”

Aaron Schock’s ‘Beach Bro’ Says Former Congressman Has “Grown And Changed Significantly”

(image via Instagram)

Several days ago, I reported on a post by Instagrammer Jeremy Cormier which pictured himself with his friend/“beach bro,” former quisling Republican Congressman Aaron Schock.

A post shared by Jeremy Cormier (@jeremycormier) on Aug 9, 2019 at 9:32am PDT

As many know by now, Schock resigned from office in 2015 amid scandal regarding allegations of misusing campaign funds for personal use.

While in office, the Illinois Republican, who was long-rumored to be in the closet, voted against LGBTQ rights such as supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and voting against the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

Schock disappeared from the public eye for some time but resurfaced this spring hanging out with shirtless gay men at the Coachella Music Festival. Photos and video also came to light showing Schock making out with a young man while working his hands down the guy’s pants.

There’s more, but you get the gist. In other words, it appears the ‘rumors’ were true.

Last week, Cormier a photo of the two on the beach with their impressive abs on full display, and the ‘influencer’ made a point to tag Schock (apparently they are “beach bros”) in the post.

Now, considering Cormier spends a great deal of time on social media (at least his abs do), he had to know there would be a response about his newly-announced “beach bro.”

And there most definitely were.

Comments on that post and subsequent posts asked Cormier his thoughts on Schock’s anti-LGBTQ voting record and how, as a proud gay, he could consort with the former lawmaker.

Instinctreached out to Cormier at the time via the email address shown in his Instagram account to ask his “side” of the story. To date, we haven’t received a reply.

Cormier has now responded via his Instagram account.

In the new post, he acknowledges the “attention” the post received and the questions raised by some followers.

First up, he makes a point to clear the about the label of ‘influencer,’ saying he never claimed that title. But he assures readers that “if he were to try and influence anyone it would be to do something good.”

Cormier shares that he and Mr. Schock became friends at some point this year, but stresses he has never “shared or supported” the former congressman’s views he ‘espoused’ while in office.

The Instagrammer adds that to know Schock “is to know someone who’s viewpoint has grown and changed significantly in the last decade.”

Cormier contends that in order to “affect change open communication among those with differing views is essential.”

“The support our community enjoys can only grow when we reach out to those who don’t share our viewpoint,” he adds.

This is where I’ll point out (again) that here at Instinct we did reach out to Mr. Cormier and received no response. Not exactly the ‘open communication’ he seems to be espousing.

Turning the corner (or perhaps deflecting the issue at hand), Cormier then asks readers to donate to The Victory Fund, which works to help elect openly LGBTQ candidates to public office. He shares that he has already made a $500 donation himself.

Cormier goes on to say that in the days since he posted his photo tagging Schock, he has “experienced bullying and personal hatred” that he wouldn’t wish on anyone.

“That behavior can never be justified even when it’s directed toward those who don’t support us,” he adds. Cormier continues saying he encourages “everyone to fight against hatred and bullying wherever it exists.”

And in that spirit, he also announces he’s made a donation to The Trevor Project, the leading national organization that helps young LGBTQ people in crisis and offers counseling for those considering suicide.

Cormier draws his statement to a close stating he is not “perfect.”

“I am a normal, flawed individual and have never claimed otherwise,” says Cormier. “But what I do know is hate is toxic and it perpetuates – it is good for no one. I recognize this is only a small effort but let’s do something good together.”

Now, I appreciate the tenor and tone of the post.

But I feel Cormier misses both the point and an opportunity here. And, it feels a bit like he’s playing the victim card here.

After blithely posting a photo with someone who literally worked AGAINST the good of the LGBTQ community, with a caption of ‘beach bros,’ Cormier seems taken aback that anyone noticed or had a reaction.

In one sentence he shares that Schock has “grown and changed significantly.” But neither he nor Schock have addressed HOW he has changed.

The intrepid Instagrammer says open communication is key to effect change, but he doesn’t say if HIS conversations with the former congressman have been, in any way, to affect that change.

What LGBTQ people are up in arms about is Schock seeming to shrug off his past while playing with the gays in West Hollywood and tipping go-go boys in Mexico City.

After months of LGBTQ media noting these episodes and wondering, “Has he changed? Did he have some sort of epiphany?”, Schock remains silent.

For Schock’s part, he can easily sit down with a member of the LGBTQ media and openly discuss the journey to ‘here.’

Everyone comes out in their own time. Absolutely.

But folks don’t get to vote against their own marginalized community, then enjoy the benefits of that community that fought long and hard for its own rights while simultaneously playing the victim.

In a single interview, Schock can clear the air.

Hey, Aaron – call me. I promise to quote you in full; no ‘out-of-context’ action whatsoever.

Some folks may wonder why the LGBTQ media won’t let this go. Since this is my blog, let me put this in personal terms.

I didn’t meet my father-in-law for 17 years. Early on it was made clear he was uncomfortable with his son being gay. And, with my husband’s family living on the other side of the country, I was never invited to come to visit or get to know him.

Fine. I understood parents have to come to terms with a son’s coming out. So, it was what it was.

Finally, though, there came a time where we were all going to be in the same place at the same time – attending a concert by one of my husband’s client. By then, the dad was “used to” the idea of his son being married to a man, but it just wasn’t discussed.

With an impending face-to-face meeting on the horizon, my father-in-law told my hubby, “Fine, we’ll just meet at the concert.”

Now, after that time, I didn’t hold a grudge. But, the one thing I put my foot down about was I would not let 17 years of being ignored as a member of the family be swept away by a quick “Hi, nice to meet you” as the lights went down in a theater.

I insisted my hubby, his parents and I sit down for a meal the night before and actually get to know each other.

That’s what happened. It healed a LOT. Today, we are all fine and family.

In saying that, my point is: if Aaron Schock would reach out to the community he helped harm, and have the “open communication” Cormier espouses, I think many would feel somewhat easier about moving on from Schock and his past.

Regarding Cormier, I understand he would feel the need to say ’something’ about the controversial post.

And now, he has.

I realize the post I made the other day has gotten a lot of attention and raised questions about what I stand for. I’d like to address that now. Among other things, it has been assumed that my sole goal in life is to be an Instagram ‘influencer’ and while I have never claimed that, if I were to ever try and influence anyone it would be to do something good. So here’s what I have to say: Aaron Schock and I became friends in 2019. I do not now, nor have I ever shared or supported the views he espoused concerning LGBTQ rights while in Congress. Knowing him, is to know someone who’s viewpoint has grown and changed significantly in the last decade. To affect change open communication among those with differing views is essential. The support our community enjoys can only grow when we reach out to those who don’t share our viewpoint. In that vein I invite you to join me in donating to the @victoryfund , I have already donated $500. The organization works to elect openly LGBTQ persons to protect our community and advance equality. Since my post was made I have experienced bullying and personal hatred on a level that I would not wish on anyone. That behavior can never be justified even when it’s directed toward those who don’t support us. I encourage everyone to fight against hatred and bullying wherever it exists. To do that, please join me in donating to the @trevorproject , an organization fighting to provide crisis counseling to LGBTQ youth – many of whom have suffered from bullying. Once again, I have already donated $500 and invite others to donate as well. I’m not perfect. I am a normal, flawed individual and have never claimed otherwise. But what I do know is hate is toxic and it perpetuates – it is good for no one. I recognize this is only a small effort but let’s do something good together.

Are These Two ‘Queer Eye’ Celebs Dating?

Two stars of Netflix's 'Queer Eye' pulled an April Fool's Day-in-July Instagram hoax
Queer Eye stars Jonathan Van Ness & Antoni Porowski (via Instagram)

Fans of the Netflix ‘make better’ series, Queer Eye, had a social media meltdown when two of the show’s stars, avocado-loving foodie Antoni Porowski and mustachioed grooming guy Jonathan Van Ness, posted a photo on Antoni’s Instagram account of the two just about to engage in a hot and heavy make-out session.

Accompanying the photo was the caption, “I guess Amurica’s birthday’s our anniversary, babe,” complete with heart emoji.

Aw….

Over 700,000 fans ‘liked’ the post and 1,100+ commented with an array of rainbow and heart emojis.

One fan offered to be the flower girl at the boys’ wedding.

Another penned a voyeuristic, “I would watch.”

Some commenters, though, warned that if the July 4 announcement was not on the up-and-up, they would be done with the duo.

Wrote one fan, “If this is fake, I’m literally never French tucking again.”

Well,…

Today, Van Ness fessed up, taking to HIS Instagram to calm fans down, saying, “It was all Antoni’s idea [pride flag emoji], but maybe someday we will fall in love.”

He added a hashtag that read, “not a couple but it was fun right”

Fellow Queer Eye cast mate, Bobby Berk commented, “How much do I have to beg you to keep the jvntoni account up and running just for the content?”

Berk added, “Made the news and everything – that’s when you know you’re ICONS!”

In truth, it appears this is how the two jokers spent their July 4th holidays:

Happy Bday America 🏳️‍🌈 One of the things that makes me proudest to be American is the ability to openly dissent. To speak negatively of your government in many countries isn’t permitted, I’m grateful here that we are able to call things the way we see them. That being said, trans women of color are being killed by guns, queer lives are being taken by guns, all Americans lives have been effected by gun violence. The house passed a bipartisan gun violence bill to help close the loopholes in the background check system in gun purchases, it won’t get a vote because of @senatemajldr – it is supported by over 90% of Americans & 75% within the NRA. Or the #equalityact which also enjoys overwhelming public support which we desperately need passed to ensure equal rights for people despite sexual orientation or gender expressions at a federal level. What makes America great is our diversity, our ability to speak TRUTH to power, and our ability to VOTE. Use today to connect with people you care about to see what matters to them about what we want to see happen here in the United States. Do we want a senate that won’t even vote on bills passed by the house? Do we want leaders who openly defy the constitution, engage in subvert and overt racism or do we want fairness and equality? Do we want to sanction police brutality or do we want to feel safe around law enforcement? I want an America that is more fair, more united, and allows the opportunities that I’ve been able to have for all. To achieve change we have to talk to each other, let’s celebrate today but keep on speaking your truth to power. 🏳️‍🌈🇺🇸🇺🇸
