Study Shows Wisconsin’s New, Stricter Voter-ID Laws Suppressed 200,000 2016 Votes

Hillary Clinton’s loss in the 2016 election has been described as “death by a thousand cuts.”

Clinton herself has admitted mistakes on behalf of her campaign, but it’s also impossible to not point to FBI Director James Comey’s announcement reviving the issue of Hillary’s emails just 11 days before the election, plus the Wikileaks constant drip of DNC emails.

Add another component to her loss as The Nation shares the results of a study that shows Wisconsin’s new strict voter-ID laws caused a drop of 200,000 fewer votes than in 2012.

Trump won Wisconsin by 22,748 votes.

Those lost votes tended to skew more Democratic and more African-American.

According to the study, states that did not implement stricter voting-ID laws saw participation increase by 1.3%. The states that did add tougher ID restrictions saw 3.3% less voters at the polls.

Bill Maher To Liberal Purists Who Couldn’t Vote For Hillary: “Go F*ck Yourselves”

For every “Bernie or Bust-er” and Jill Stein supporters:

Bill Maher took time this past Friday night during his “New Rules” segment to ask those Liberals who couldn’t bring themselves to vote for Hillary Clinton how they are feeling now that President Trump has passed his 100th day in the White House.

Via HuffPost:

“This isn’t about reliving the last election or my great love for Clinton, which never was, but this is about winning the next election,” Maher said. “And that begins with learning the difference between an imperfect friend and a deadly enemy.”

After noting how various liberal politicians, activists and commentators had said that either a Trump or Clinton administration would be a disaster, Maher asked whether conservatives would now control the Supreme Court if the “just-as-evil-Hillary” had won.

“Just wait until the 5 to 4 decisions start rolling in, gutting unions, making it harder for minorities to vote, siding with polluters, overturning abortion rights,” he said. “Then maybe you’ll join me in saying to the liberal purists, go fuck yourselves with a locally grown organic cucumber.”

And yes, I agree with everything Bill says here.

Hillary Clinton To Launch New Political Group “Onward Together”

After six months of walks in the woods, taking time out of the national spotlight, it looks like Hillary Clinton is gearing up again to be an influence on the American political landscape.

Via Politico:

The former secretary of state is building a new political group to fund organizations working on the resistance to President Donald Trump’s agenda, spending recent weeks in Washington, New York City, and Chappaqua, N.Y. meeting with donors and potential groups to invest in, and recruiting individuals for the group’s board of directors, multiple people close to the two-time White House hopeful and people familiar with the group’s planning told POLITICO.

She is looking to launch the group, expected to be called Onward Together — a nod to her campaign slogan, Stronger Together — as soon as next week, they say. Clinton’s spokesman declined to comment for this story.

Meanwhile, Judith McHale, who served as an undersecretary of state under Clinton, has been working with her to find groups to fund, as has former Democratic National Committee chairman, presidential candidate, and Vermont Gov. Howard Dean.

She has been in conversation with a wide range of political allies to discuss her next steps for months, but along with her upcoming book, the group — whose existence was first reported by Axios — is the most concrete step. The new organization is not expected to have a large staff, but will instead focus on sending money to other organizations at a time that Democratic donors are largely unsure about how they should be spending their cash.

The effort is starting to come together as its leader is increasingly stepping back into the public spotlight — and while her party is still searching for its path ahead. After going quiet for a stretch after the campaign, Clinton has started publicly supporting groups aligned with her main goals, and is now not hesitating to jab at Trump when asked about him.

On Tuesday, for example, she appeared at a Women For Women International event in New York, forcefully repeating to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour her belief that Russian interference and FBI Director James Comey’s intervention were the proximate reasons for her loss in 2016.

Hillary Clinton: The Comey Letter & Wikileaks “Scared Off” Voters

I was listening to this as it happened, and I was struck almost numb listening to such a competent, thoughtful, articulate person address the issues at hand.

And to think we have Trump for a president.

Business Insider reports:

Hillary Clinton told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour during a women’s event on Tuesday that she believes she was “on the way to winning” the 2016 presidential election until the FBI announced 11 days before the election that it was revisiting the investigation into her emails.

The former Secretary of State said that while she takes “absolute personal responsibility” for her defeat, “a combination of [FBI Director] Jim Comey’s letter on October 28 and Russian Wikileaks raised doubts in the minds of people who were inclined to vote for me and got scared off.”

“The evidence” that those two “intervening events” were carried out to harm her candidacy is “compelling and persuasive,” Clinton told Amanpour on Tuesday. But she said she is “proud” of her campaign for overcoming an “enormous barrage of negativity, of false equivalence, of so much else.”

Regarding the comments on the campaign, Comey and Wikileaks, I absolutely agree with Hillary.

Yes, she and her team made mistakes, and she cops to them here taking responsibility.

But she definitely was on the cusp of winning before Comey came out with his stunning public statement about “new” (not new) emails 11 days before the election.

The clip about the campaign is below, but I really urge you to watch the full 34 minutes. It’s striking to think what an intelligent president we almost had.

Hillary Clinton: “We May Never Be Able To Count On Trump Administration To Lead On LGBT Issues”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

While giving a speech last night at a dinner for The LGBT Center, former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton warned of “clouds gathering on the horizon” for LGBT rights.

“The progress that we fought for, that many of you were on the front lines of, and that we’ve celebrated and maybe even taken for granted, may not be as secure as we once expected,” said Clinton.

She later added, “I think we have to face the fact that we may never be able to count on this administration to lead on LGBT issues.”

Clinton also addressed the situation in Chechnya, where gay men have been reportedly detained, beaten, tortured and killed just for being gay.

“In recent weeks, we’ve heard terrifying accounts from Chechnya of gay and bisexual men being taken from their homes and families, tortured, even killed. And when government authorities were confronted with these reports, their response was chilling. They said that you cannot arrest or repress people – who do not exist. The United States government — yes, this government — should demand an end to the persecution of innocent people.”

The New York Times recently published an op-ed taking President Trump to task for his “record of empty talk” on LGBTQ rights.

As we all know, during the presidential campaign, Hillary was endorsed by just about every LGBT organization in the U.S.

Hillary Clinton: We Cannot Speak Of Protecting Syrian Babies And Then Close America’s Doors To Them

Hillary Clinton called for military action against Syria on Thursday, ahead of President Trump’s bombing of the Syrian airbase last night.

Trump shared with the nation that he was moved by the suffering of babies who died slow deaths due to a chemical weapons attack by President Bashar al-Assad on his own people.

Hillary took things a step further today, connecting the dots (and logic) by saying:

“But the action taken last night needs to be followed by a broader strategy to end Syria’s civil war. And to eliminate ISIS’ strongholds on both sides of the border.

“So I hope this administration will move forward in a way that is both strategic and consistent with our values.

“And I also hope that they will recognize that we cannot in one breath speak of protecting Syrian babies, and in the next close America’s doors to them.”

Perfect.

Hillary Clinton Defends WH Reporter April Ryan & Congresswoman Maxine Waters

Today in San Francisco, Hillary Clinton defended sexist attacks made on White House reporter April Ryan and Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

In the speech, Clinton condemns every day sexism, citing White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s telling reporter April Ryan to stop “shaking her head,” and Bill O’Reilly’s joke last night about Maxine Waters’ “I didn’t hear a word she said – I was looking at the James Brown wig.”

During her remarks, her most political since the election, she encouraged, “Resist, insist, persist and enlist.”

And can we talk about the fab leather blazer???

Tweet Of The Day: Hillary Clinton

Democratic political consultant Philippe Reines, who worked for the Hillary Clinton campaign, today tweeted, “Russians spy. Health Care is complicated. Diplomacy is exhausting. Who knew?”

Seeing the tweet, Hillary trolled Trump with a four-word reply, “Things I learned today.”

Bravo.

Hillary Clinton For Democrats: “Let Resistance Plus Persistence Equal Progress”

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton reaches out to fellow Democrats just a day before the party is set to elect it’s next party chair.

During the three minute video, Clinton rallies the Dems for the work and elections that lie ahead.

“Ideas we championed are now inspiring leaders and activists across our country. Nearly sixty-six million votes are fueling grass roots energy and activism.

“And everywhere people are marching, protesting, tweeting, speaking out and working for an America that’s hopeful, inclusive and big-hearted.

“We as Democrats must move forward with courage, confidence and optimism, and stay focused on the elections we must win this year and next,” she said. “Let resistance plus persistence equal progress for our party and our country.”
