Birth of the “Shoe Truthers”

After a shoe was thrown at Hillary Clinton last week in Las Vegas, far right wing pundits have started pumping a theory – we’ll call them “shoe truthers” – that the attacker was a fake and the entire episode was staged.

Gee, that didn’t take too long.

From Talking Points Memo:

A blog post published Monday at the website of Fox News commentator Bernard Goldberg speculated that Clinton probably “calculated it beforehand,” as is “almost always true” with things that happen to her.

“So it would not be stretching logic to suppose that Hillary arranged to have the shoe thrown at her,” wrote Arthur Louis at Goldberg’s site. “Remembering the Bush incident [when an Iraqi journalist threw two shoes at President George W. Bush], she may have calculated that this would make her seem presidential. This would explain why Ms. Ernst was not pounded to a pulp by Hillary’s bodyguards, and why she seems on the verge of getting off scot free. Don’t be too surprised, the next time you visit Phoenix, if you see her sitting at a table in a downtown Hillary for President store front, stuffing and sealing envelopes.”

On Monday, Rush Limbaugh entertained the same idea, telling radio listeners he “can totally relate” to those who believe that “everything the Clintons do is staged or choreographed.” Asked about it by a listener, he emphasized that he hadn’t studied the incident and isn’t too concerned about it, but said people have told him Clinton’s reaction “wasn’t natural.”

“I’m sorry, I’m ill-equipped to comment,” Limbaugh said, adding: “Maybe it’s because, in my subconscious, I think it was staged, or set up, or whatever. … I don’t know why anybody would be throwing a shoe at Hillary unless — maybe it’s an attempt to make the Benghazi people look like nuts and lunatics and wackos.”

Las Vegas: Woman throws shoe at Hillary Clinton during speech appearance

The AP is reporting that a woman was taken into custody after throwing what appears to be a shoe at Hillary Clinton as she addressed an Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries meeting in Las Vegas.

After the woman was walked out of the auditorium by security, Hillary joked “My goodness, I didn’t know that solid waste management was so controversial. Thank goodness she didn’t play softball like I did.”

Authorities say the woman would be arrested.

Hillary Clinton on possible 2016 White House run: “I’m thinking about it”

Speaking at a conference in San Francisco, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came thisclose to announcing a probable run for the White House in 2016. “I’m thinking about it,” she said.

From CNET:

“The hard questions aren’t do you want to be president, or can you win,” said Clinton, who appeared here as the headliner at a conference sponsored by marketing automation software company Marketo. “The hard question is why. Why would you want to do this and what would you offer that could make a difference.”

For now, though, Clinton said she does not plan “to make a decision for a while,” saying she is “actually enjoying my life…seeing my friends and going on long walks and playing with my dog.”

“I danced around that pretty well, didn’t I,” she said, drawing peals of laughter from the audience.

Ohio: Hillary Clinton tops hypothetical 2016 GOP Presidential candidates

New Quinnipiac University Poll shows former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton leading all potential 2016 GOP presidential nominees:

Secretary Clinton tops Gov. Christie 49 – 36 percent in an early look at the 2016 presidential race in this critical swing state. The Democrat tops other possible Republican contenders:

51 – 36 percent over former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush
50 – 36 percent over U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida
51 – 38 percent over U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky
49 – 40 percent over U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin
51 – 34 percent over U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas
51 – 39 percent over Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Overall, Ohio voters say by a margin of 55%-39% that Hillary would make a good president. No Republican in the poll had positive numbers on that question.

RNC chairman Reince Preibus says Monica Lewinsky scandal is “on the table” for 2016

Republican National Party chairman Reince Preibus thinks the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal of almost 20 years ago is somehow “on the table” in terms of attacking Hillary Clinton, should she decide to run for president in 2016.

I’m not sure how that becomes a solid talking point unless what you’re addressing is the fact that Hillary didn’t quit when the going got tough, AND she showed a strong commitment to her marriage vows by working it out.

However, those don’t sound like anything negative to me.

Call me crazy, but I think those are strong positives to talk on.

End of the day though, I think using a personal issue between a married couple from almost 20 years ago for political gain today is political suicide.

But, we’ve seen worse from the GOP.

Poll: Washington Post shows Hillary clear front runner for 2016

According to a new Washington Post/ABC News poll, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the clear front-runner for president in 2016.

In a Democratic primary, the poll shows Democratic voters prefer Clinton over Vice-President Joe Biden by 61 points.

On the Republican side of things, former vice-presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan barely leads a tightly ranked group of possible GOP nominees at 20%, a 2 point lead over former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

In a hypothetical general election, the poll indicates Hillary Clinton would beat NJ Gov. Chris Christie 53% – 41%.

Largest “liberal” super PAC gets in gear for Hillary 2016

Priorities USA Action, a major player in the re-election of President Obama and the largest liberal “super PAC” in the country, is officially getting behind the still undeclared candidacy of Hillary Clinton for president in 2016.

This announcement marks one of the earliest launches of big-dollar fund-raising in support of a nonincumbent presidential candidate.

Years after being overtaken in the 2008 Dem primary by Obama, many former members of the president’s team are shifting their hard-earned expertise learned during his successful re-election to the prospects of Hillary possibly becoming his successor.

From the NY Times:

Jim Messina, Mr. Obama’s campaign manager in 2012, who has forged close ties with many Democratic donors, will serve as co-chairman of the revamped super PAC and an affiliated nonprofit, along with Jennifer M. Granholm, the former governor of Michigan who is among the most persistent voices calling for Mrs. Clinton to enter the 2016 race.

Unlike other pro-Clinton organizations, which have focused on recruiting small donors or building lists of grass-roots supporters, Priorities is seeking six- and seven-figure checks to power major advertising expenditures in support of Mrs. Clinton — including, if necessary, responses to attacks by Republicans and conservatives in advance of a formal campaign declaration. (Like all super PACs, the group would be barred from coordinating spending and strategy with Mrs. Clinton if she entered the presidential race.)
