Research: Studies Show Red Wine Supports Good Health/Anti-Aging

Wicked Gay Blog shares that according to a study conducted by the University of Alberta in Canada, the health benefits in resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, are equivalent to those that we get from exercise.

According to lead researcher, Jason Dyck, these findings will help those unable to exercise as resveratrol was seen to improve physical performance, heart function and muscle strength.

“I think resveratrol could help patient populations who want to exercise but are physically incapable,” he says.

“Resveratrol could mimic exercise for them or improve the benefits of the modest amount of exercise that they can do.”

Discussion over the health benefits of red wine have been well documented. Studies have revealed that those who drink a glass of red wine a day are less likely to develop dementia or cancer, that it’s good for your heart, anti-ageing and can regulate blood sugar.

Yay! More wine!

And here’s to hot guys who drink wine!

New York City Launches PrEP Campaign Via Dating Apps

The New York City Health Department has begun a campaign for anti-HIV medication Truvada via social media to promote the use of the drug in order to lower risk of infections.

Originally intended to treat HIV+ folks, in 2012 the drug was approved as a preventative option for gay men who may be more at risk for infection due to inconsistent use of condoms. Studies have shown the drug to be 90% effective against new infections when used on a daily basis.

However, not everyone is thrilled with the preventative use of the medication.

Some AIDS activists, including an older generation that saw the disease’s devastating toll before lifesaving drugs were introduced, are among PrEP’s most ardent foes.

Larry Kramer, the playwright and a hero of the movement, caused a stir in May when he called PrEP users “cowardly” and questioned why anyone would choose to “poison” oneself with antivirals like PrEP instead of simply using condoms.

A stigma persists that Truvada is a “party pill” — an attitude shared by some doctors who scold patients about their sexual practices and won’t prescribe it, said Anthony Hayes, a spokesman for the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, which backs PrEP. The journal Clinical Infectious Diseases found that 74 percent of surveyed clinicians back PrEP, yet only 9 percent had prescribed it.

The city’s PrEP push is misguided, said Michael Weinstein, head of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which serves 200,000 patients globally.

“The first order of business in medical ethics is ‘do no harm,’ and what the New York City Health Department’s doing is doing harm, because there are people who are going to take this drug intermittently, who are going to think they’re protected, who are going to not be protected,” Weinstein said.

PrEP critics say users who fail to take the pill daily could still risk HIV infection. Weinstein fears the therapy encourages condomless sex and thus the danger of other sexually transmitted infections. Potential side effects include kidney and bone problems.

NYC is spending $500,000 promoting the medication with outreach to physicians and ad campaigns through social media and dating apps like Grindr and Scruff.

Study shows fist bumps transfer 90% fewer germs than handshake

It’s not only hip to be cool, but it’s healthier.

A new study shows a fist bump transfers 90% less bacteria than a traditional handshake.

The ever popular high five gave the gift of about 50% of the germs of a handshake.

Via Vox:

Their methods for reaching this conclusion were rather interesting: the scientists used rubber gloves and spread them with a thick layer of E. coli bacteria. They then exchanged fist bumps, hand shakes, and high fives with researchers who were wearing clean rubber gloves, randomly varying the intensity and duration of the greetings.

One of the study authors, Dr. Dave Whitworth, a senior lecturer at Aberystwyth University, had this message for the public: “People rarely think about the health implications of shaking hands. If the general public could be encouraged to fist-bump, there is genuine potential to reduce the spread of infectious diseases.”

Conservative pundits continue to paint Hillary Clinton’s health as sub-par

Conservative political pundits have been trying to create a story about Hillary Clinton’s health as an issue of “concern” in regards to her possible presidential run in 2016.  Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh, among others, continue to find ways to imply that Clinton’s health is somehow sub-par.

Today, conservative blogger Matt Drudge floated the idea that the new cover of People Magazine shows Hillary leaning on a walker.

People actually had to issue a statement saying that Hillary’s hands are resting on a patio chair.

From Nancy Valentino, a senior vice president of communications at Time Inc., which owns People: “Secretary Clinton is standing next to a patio chair in the backyard of her home where the photo shoot took place! I have also attached another photo from the shoot – thanks for checking in on this.”

It’s getting really silly, folks…

Anti-gay people die earlier

NOM President Brian Brown may want to consider his health when campaigning against rights of gays

A study in the February issue of the American Journal of Public Health shows that people who have anti-gay animus tend to live shorter lives.

The study included the responses of 20,226 heterosexuals who participated in General Social Survey interviews between 1988 and 2008, 4,216 of whom had died by the end of the study period.

From Business Insider:

People who espouse anti-gay views die younger than those who don’t, found a sure-to-be-controversial study in the February issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

“Anti-gay prejudice is associated with elevated mortality risk among heterosexuals, over and above multiple established risk factors for mortality,” wrote the researchers, led by Mark L. Hatzenbuehler of Columbia University.

In fact, those who were not highly prejudiced against gay people lived an average of 2.5 years longer than those who were.

Researchers hypothesize that the increased anger and stress of anti-gay prejudice could lead to risk of higher heart disease.

Proper toilet posture – Things that make you go hmm…

Ok, this is a video about research done that shows squatting instead of sitting on a toilet is far better for doing our bathroom deeds.

Don’t worry – the video isn’t gross or icky. But gives you something to think about. I know many eastern cultures still utilize the “squat” method.

Take a look and see what you think.

Nick Jonas: Instagram shirtless pic was about fitness as diabetic

Nick Jonas shares shirtless self-pic to show diabetics can stay in shape and stay healthy

Nick Jonas talks to the Ryan Seacrest Show about the viral shirtless Instagram selfie that lit up the web this week:

“There’s a lot of people running around without their shirts on these days, so I just didn’t want to add to the noise, but I felt like as a diabetic … it’s twice as hard for us diabetics to stay in shape.

“I’ve met a lot of diabetics recently who have come to me and said, ‘Thank you for being so vocal about fitness and health’ because it’s helping them. I just wanted to give some inspiration to those people … It’s been a pretty hilarious reaction.”

Jonas tagged the Instagram pic with this: “I never do this but… Healthy living and fitness update. Post workout picture. #diabeticinshape #2.0″
