Hideous: Jack In The Box Employee Mocks Deaf Customer
ReVae Arnaud-Jensen, who has been deaf since birth, attempted to order a meal at the drive-through window of a Jack in the Box restaurant. Since she was unable to hear the employee ask for her order through the drive-through speaker, she drove up to the window where she explained she is deaf. What happened next is hideous. The employee refused to take her order telling her she had to go back to the speaker and place the order there. Instead of simply taking her order, the employee began to argue with her and eventually laughed at her and mocked her use of sign language. When Arnaud-Jensen insists that she be served, the employee shuts the window and leaves. Arnaud-Jensen shared the video of the encounter on her Facebook and explained she “sat there for two hours,” but never received her food. “This is common for deaf people to experience this including me,” wrote Arnaud-Jensen. “This is not my first time. It had this happen to me several times, however, this one was the worst I have experienced.” According to local news reports, the employee has been fired but Arnaud-Jensen intends on suing the company anyway to bring further awareness of the day-to-day struggles of the Deaf community.

Nyle DiMarco & ‘What Would You Do?’ Look At Deaf Discrimination

Dancing with the Stars and America’s Next Top Model champ Nyle DiMarco took part in a segment of What Would You Do?, the hidden camera show, which focused on discrimination faced by the deaf community.
DiMarco explained to host John Quiñones that he and his family, who are all deaf, have experienced discrimination while being served in restaurants before.
“Often, waiters are completely petrified and unsure what to do with us,” said DiMarco. “You can see in their eyes their world kind of collapsing as they try and figure out how to deal with us.”
The hidden camera show set out to see how other diners would react to a waiter being rude and refusing to serve a deaf guest (played by deaf actor J.W.) while the cameras rolled. DiMarco also stepped in as the restaurant guest himself.

In one scenario, after the ‘waiter’ gets frustrated with J.W., a diner explains that J.W. is deaf. After the waiter tells the guest J.W. should have an interpreter with him, she suggests he could look at the menu where J.W. is pointing.
“That isn’t my job, though,” says the waiter.
The guest gets up from her table, walks to J.W.’s side and reads aloud what he’s pointing to. There – not so hard, huh?
Both J.W. and DiMarco told Quiñones they were happy with how people stepped in to address the waiter but added that things like that don’t happen very often in daily interactions. When one woman called the manager, Nyle said, “She’s doing everything right – this is what we’d love to see more people do.”
J.W. added, “Usually, when this kind of situation happens, people don’t get up and respond – or, it takes quite some time before somebody gets involved.”
See how diners react in the segment below.
In a post-show interview, J.W. offered this advice to Quiñones for interacting with deaf people, “Accept other people for who they are, and learn how to communicate with everybody. The simplest body language, the simplest gestures, will go a long way and have a big impact.”
A few years ago, Chippendales brought Nyle in to be there celebrity guest host (my husband, Michael, is the publicist for the Chipps). It was heartening to see all the Chippendales make an effort to learn some American Sign Language during his tenure at the show.
As J.W. mentions, even the simplest gestures go a long way.
I do have two suggestions I learned from Nyle to help avoid frustrations and communicate with the deaf community.
One simple fix is to pull your phone out and type out a text message, then show it to the deaf person you may be trying to communicate with. They’re deaf, but they can read. It’s an easy approach to overcoming barriers.
Also, Nyle has helped develop The ASL App for your phone, which teaches simple, everyday phrases. Developed, designed and created by Deaf people, you can pick up basics (even in slow motion if you don’t catch it the first time) to help communicate with those who use ASL.
Mayor Pete Thanks A Deaf Supporter In Sign Language

Just when I think I’m totally impressed by Mayor Pete Buttigieg, he does something like this.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg posted a video in sign language on Wednesday thanking a deaf supporter for the American Sign Language (ASL) sign he created for the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate’s name.
“Hi Andy — thank you for your support, thanks,” Buttigieg signed in a video posted on Twitter.

Trans/Deaf Model Cast As Young Super Hero on ‘Titans’

| Trans/deaf model Chella Man will play ‘Jericho’ in DC Universe’s TITANS |
The world of super-heroes is about to get a lot more diverse as transgender model, activist and YouTuber Chella Man has been cast to play ‘Jericho’ in season 2 of the live-action TV series Titans.
The 20-year-old, who identifies as Jewish/Chinese-American, deaf and genderqueer, announced the news on his social media where he has developed a large following documenting his transition including top surgery and hormone replacement.
The Brooklyn-based artist has over 255k followers on Instagram, 65k on Twitter, and over 173,000 subscribers on YouTube.
In his Instagram post announcing the news of his new acting gig, Man shared, “As a trans, Deaf, Jewish person of color, I have always reminded myself of the power in my differences.”
“It is a dream come true, now, as I will be able to showcase this power on the Titans,” he continued. “HUGE thank you to all who have supported me throughout this process!”
Man’s super-hero character, ‘Jericho,’ has the ability to possess and control the body of anyone he makes eye contact with. He communicates through sign language as he was rendered mute as a youth when kidnappers severed his vocal cords.
When Jericho possesses another body, he can communicate using that person’s voice, vocabulary and language.
The character first appeared in 1984’s Tales of the Teen Titans #43, and is the son of longtime villain, ‘Deathstroke.’ Esai Morales has been cast as the father and will join the show in season 2 with Man.
While the original Tales of the Teen Titans comic books in the 1980s didn’t address his sexuality, his modern incarnation is openly bisexual and has an edgier quality.
Man joins the series which debuted last fall as the first original programming for the DC Universe subscription streaming site.
The show follows a team of young heroes led by Batman-side kick Robin, the empath Raven, alien princess Starfire and shape-shifting Beast Boy.
Director/producer Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon; Riverdale; The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), is a member of the Titans producing team.
Filming for season 2 of Titans is scheduled to begin next month.
Samsung Creates A Special Morning For Hearing Impaired
Samsung teamed up with a hearing impaired man’s sister to give him a special morning 🙂
From PC Magazine:
Sometimes marketing gives us actual nice things and not just the illusion of them. To promote the launch of Samsung’s new video call center for the hearing impaired, Samsung Türkiye and advertising agency Leo Burnett Istanbul spent a month preparing to surprise a young Istanbul resident named Muharrem with an extraordinary morning — and a heartwarming advertisement for the rest of us.
The ad, called “Hearing Hands,” begins with Muharrem and his sister leaving their home for a walk through their neighborhood. Muharrem, who is hearing impaired, is pleasantly surprised when strangers on the street and in shops communicate with him using sign language.
