So You Think You Can Dance – Final 4 “Wind Beneath My Wings”

Well, I really like this.

This dance, choreographed by Travis Wall, opened last night’s show and is apparently one of the few times, SYTYCD has utilized same-sex partners actually dancing with each other in a some-what romantic scenario.

Clearly the theme of the dance references LGBT equality and same-sex marriage. On top of the excellent execution by the final four dancers (Valerie Rockey, Ricky Ubeda, Jessica Richens, and Zack Everhart Jr.), the choreography is creative, current and thoughtful.

By the way, the recording of “Wind Beneath My Wings” was by Canadian twins RyanDan. You can find the recording here on iTunes.

DVD: “All That Jazz”

Criterion is releasing a new, restored BLU-RAY/DVD release of Bob Fosse’s 1979 musical masterpiece, All That Jazz.

Roy Scheider plays Fosse alter-ego “Joe Gideon,” a sex and drugs prone workaholic balancing career (a new Broadway show while editing a new movie) with personal life.  P.s. – the personal life sees less success than the professional.

Criterion’s amazing 4K restoration includes several new features:

  • New 4K digital restoration, with 3.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • Audio commentary featuring editor Alan Heim
  • Selected-scene audio commentary by actor Roy Scheider
  • New interviews with Heim and Fosse biographer Sam Wasson
  • New conversation between actors Ann Reinking and Erzsebet Foldi
  • Episode of the talk show Tomorrow from 1980, featuring director Bob Fosse and choreographer Agnes de Mille
  • Interviews with Fosse from 1981 and 1986
  • On-set footage
  • Portrait of a Choreographer, a 2007 documentary on Fosse
  • The Soundtrack: Perverting the Standards, a 2007 documentary about the film’s music
  • Interview with George Benson from 2007, about his song “On Broadway,” which opens the film
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Hilton Als

Dance: Gregg Burge and Hinton Battle

It’s a “dance” kind of day at The Randy Report.

My good friend Darrell shared this video of the incredible Hinton Battle and Gregg Burge dancing on a TV special in the late 80s. Just fantastic. I especially like that both have their own extended solos in the middle of the number.

Enjoy.

Happy Monday Morning

I don’t know who he is, but he’s got some great moves for a Monday morning.

Barbra Streisand & Guillaume Côté – “On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever)”

My director for the production of A Chorus Line I’m currently working on sent this to me.

We are both Barbra Streisand fans. And, as we are working on a “dance show,” both fans of dancers.

Set to Barbra Streisand’s recording of “On A Clear Day,” dancer/choreographer Guillaume Côté is spectacular here. The music, the movement, all exquisite.

Interestingly, I found that the video was originally created as a clip called “Lost In Motion” with different music.  But the exact same footage, edited exactly as you see below.  Amazing how the same video fits so beautifully with Barbra’s recording.

My associate choreographer Kat Murphy was here when I first watched it and we screamed over Guillaume’s feet, turns, strength… Everything.

Wow.
