David Barton: You can’t drink Starbucks and be biblically right on marriage

David Barton, former vice-chair of the Republican Party of Texas and evangelical pastor, tells a Christian audience that they cannot drink Starbucks coffee because the company supports marriage equality.

The full quote, via RightWingWatch:

“Starbucks is pouring all this money into destroying traditional marriage. The question is, can a Christian give money to a group he knows will use it to attack what God supports. If you know that when you buy a cup of coffee at Starbucks that 5, 10, 15 cents is going to be used to defeat marriage, can you do that? The answer is no. Biblically, there’s no way a Christian can help support what is attacking God. I’m sorry, you’ve got to find some other coffee to drink. You can’t drink Starbucks and be biblically right on this thing. It’s just a real simple principle.”

Heading to SB now, can I get anyone a Venti anything?

Linda Harvey: Gays deserve to be fired

Right Wing Watch shares a rant by Mission America’s Linda Harvey who says gays deserve to be fired for not following the moral standards of, well, someone else…

Shouldn’t an employer have the right to uphold high moral standards in his or her company? Or shouldn’t schools have the right to not have open homosexuals or cross-dresses modeling that lifestyle to kids?

This does not deprive anyone of a job by the way, except those who insist on displaying these lifestyles to everyone and forcing their acceptance. Such behavior shows a disrespect for two things: everyone else around them and for hardcore facts.

The fact is that no one needs to be involved in homosexuality and all of the good qualities a person may have that might make that person otherwise an excellent employee don’t require a homosexual lifestyle.

Now the activists won’t like this and I may get another slew of hateful emails and such from the tolerance crowd but really where is the actual concern for the rights and beliefs of others? The track record on these so-called non-discrimination regulations shows a consistent and disturbing pattern of bullying and abuse.

One of many problems with Linda Harvey’s “opinion” is that she references high moral standards’ but doesn’t fully articulate that it’s HER ‘moral standards’ that she expects to be followed.

Her philosophy seems to be “you can’t be fired for your religion – which you choose, but you can be fired for your sexual orientation – which you do not choose.”

And then there’s an ugly message of conformity here, worrying that gays or lesbians may dress or act in a way SHE isn’t comfortable.

What Ms. Harvey needs to realize is ‘different’ is not a dirty word; diversity is good.

Especially if it means we all don’t emulate her.

Georgia: GOP Chairwoman – marriage equality is about a “free ride”

“You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that is as straight as an arrow. Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits? I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal.

“I believe a husband and a wife should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all about a free ride.” – Georgia GOP chairwoman Sue Everhart, speaking to the Marietta Journal. (Via Queerty)

Everhart goes on to say she COULD have a gay neighbor and be nice to them but “I’m against marriage because once you get the gay marriage you get everything else.”

THIS is how the GOP continues to embarrass itself. And this woman is the Georgia GOP Chairwoman.

SMH…

Alt-folk singer Michelle Shocked: “Tell people that Michelle Shocked says ‘God hates fags'”

Alternative folk singer Michelle Shocked decided to end her career last night when she told a San Francisco concert audience, “You can go on Twitter and tell people that Michelle Shocked says ‘God hates fags’.”

According to reports, the audience pretty much cleared the venue after the anti-gay rant.

Although many in the music press have often identified Shocked as lesbian herself,  it would seem that assumption has now been proved wrong, unless she’s gone “ex-gay.”

Indiana: Diana “Gays Have No Purpose” Medley suspended by school district

Diana Medley, Indiana special ed teacher who made the statement that gays “have no purpose in life,” has been suspended by her school district.

Superintendent Mark Baker of the Northeast School Corp. in western Indiana’s Sullivan County issued a statement Wednesday saying the teacher has been placed on administrative leave and that state and local police are stationing officers at North Central Junior-Senior High School as a precaution because of “aggressive” email messages sent to the school and the teacher.

In statements to a local television station recently, Medley said that gays had no purpose in life, the idea of LGBT teens attending a prom was “offensive,” and equated LGBT teens to students with developmental disabilities.

Medley also said that she believes homosexuality is a choice, and that no one is born gay.

An open letter to Diana Medley of Indiana

Excellent open letter from J. Patrick Redmond to Diana Medley of Indiana.

J. Patrick’s letter was prompted by Ms. Medley’s statement of support for students in Indiana who want to hold a “gays excluded” prom this year at Sullivan High School.  When asked, Medley responded to a reporter that she believes gay people have no purpose in life, and agrees that anti-gay parents and students should create a separate, “traditional” prom that would ban gay students from attending.

J. Patrick is also a teacher born in Indiana.  Here’s an excerpt from J. Patrick’s open letter:

“What you have done, Ms. Medley, by announcing to our community that “gays have no purpose” is scar and destroy the self-worth of countless Wabash Valley LGBT teens who, by whatever means, heard your hateful and vitriolic words. You are not representative of Christianity. You are not representative of Christ’s message. You are certainly not representative of love. And you are not representative of those Hoosiers that live near you –the ones that love thy gay neighbor and love me.”

Thank you J. Patrick for writing what so many of us in the LGBT community feel. We do have purpose. We do count.

Ms. Medley, thank you for revealing YOUR purpose of exclusion and judgement. Life is clearer when we can see things in the light of day. And now we can see you for who you are. My best thoughts go out to your students.

Ohio mayor resigns after stating she didn’t like “queers” on village police force

Mary McAngus being sworn in as Mayor

The mayor of Pomeroy, Ohio, has resigned after questioning whether there were “queers” on the village police force.

The Columbus Dispatch reports:

[Police Chief] Proffitt last month submitted to the village council an information packet that included his six-page sworn statement. He warned the council that the mayor’s behavior could get the village of 2,000 residents sued.

Proffitt wrote that McAngus called him into her office about two weeks after Calendine was hired. She said she heard “that Kyle was a queer” and asked what the chief was going to do about it. Nothing, he replied, because that would be discrimination.

“She stated ‘I don’t like a Queer working for the Village, I might be old-fashioned, but I don’t like it.’  ” Proffitt wrote in the statement.

The mayor persisted in making crude comments about the officer and his partner to police department employees, Proffitt said. She asked a newly hired officer if he knew that Calendine was gay and whether that bothered him. When the officer said no, she asked him if he, too, was gay, and smiled and stared at him until the uncomfortable officer said he had to get back to work, Proffitt said.

Michelangelo Signorile, of SiriusXM Radio, chases down bigot after being called “disgusting” on NYC street

Michelangelo Signorile chased down a bigot in Chelsea who called him “disgusting” after he kissed his partner:

“I’ve not come to this age in my life, to this stage of the game in the fight for LGBT rights, to have someone call me ‘disgusting’ in my own neighborhood. And it’s time none of us let them get away with it. I’m not saying that I or anyone should stand up to everybody engaged in a homophobic act every time. Obviously you have to be wise and safe. But whether it’s on the streets of Chelsea or in Columbus, Ohio, all of us, straight and gay, must speak up when we can. Stand up and fight back. Because if we don’t, they win.”

Just so you know these people really exist: Paul Madore

“The only reason why the number of supporters for same sex ‘marriage’ may be increasing is because people are sick and tired. Homosexuals have made people sick and tired. Homosexuals have absolutely nothing good to contribute to family life, which is what marriage is all about. A sterile union (between same sex couples) is never in need of marriage, and has nothing good to contribute to marriage or family life. Absolutely nothing.”
– Maine anti-gay activist Paul Madore, in a press release announcing the formation of No Special Rights PAC.

Michelle Bachman: “I’m not a judgmental person”

SRSLY. Does Michelle Bachmann know the definition of the word “bigot”?

From the Merriam-Webster Dictionary – Bigot: “a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance”

Not necessarily a bad word.  Just accurate in her case.

She holds obstinately to her own opinions.  Neither rude nor wrong.  Pretty accurate.

Piers Morgan reads Bachmann one of her quotes from 2004, saying that being gay “leads to the personal enslavement of individuals. Because if you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage.”

So we’re clear – she can say THAT and it’s not judgmental; but when Piers Morgan points it out, he’s rude?

Notice how she does the “hypnotized” thing near the end and basically ignores what Piers Morgan reads to her.
