Ian Thorpe on coming out: “I can finally ‘breathe out'”

In his interview with Sir Michael Parkinson last night, Olympian Ian Thorpe explained that he feared losing a sense of his integrity by coming out as gay.

From the Guardian:

On Sunday night on Australian television Thorpe faced Sir Michael Parkinson to overturn what he said had become the “big lie” in his life.

“What happened was, I felt that the lie had become so big that I didn’t want people to question my integrity and a little bit of ego comes into this,” Thorpe said in a 90-minute interview on the Ten network.

“I didn’t want people to think that I had lied about everything.”

“I’m not straight and this is only something that very recently – we’re talking in the past two weeks – I’ve been comfortable telling the closest people around me.”

[…]

“I’m comfortable saying I’m a gay man.

“And I don’t want people to feel the same way I did. You can grow up, you can be comfortable and you can be gay.

“I was concerned about the reaction from my family, my friends and I’m pleased to say that in telling them, especially my parents, they told me that they love me, and they support me. And for young people out there, know that that’s usually what the answer is.”

[…]

“I’m a little bit ashamed that I didn’t come out earlier, that I didn’t have the strength to do it, I didn’t have the courage to do it, to break that lie.

“But everyone goes on their own path to do this.”

It was only two years ago, in his autobiography This Is Me that he continued to deny the rumors that he was gay.

When the interview goes to air in Australia, Thorpe said, he can finally “breathe out.”

A transcript of Thorpe’s interview is here.

Australian football player Rhyian Anderson-Morley comes out

After recent homophobic comments in the media, plus more anti-gay remarks in his own lockerroom, Anderson-Morley (who plays for the Yarraville Seddon Eagles) has come out in a heartfelt essay published by The Age.

In the past, Anderson-Morley was quiet but not completely closeted about his sexuality. He writes that he put the team ahead of any disruption being openly gay would cause.

But now, he feels it’s time for Australia and the world to know him fully.

And it makes me ask, should I have walked into this club waving a rainbow flag? Would it have caused as much drama as some people seem to think? Perhaps knowing a gay bloke was at the club would get them to have a look at themselves and what they say. Perhaps it could even change some minds regarding gay people; not all of us are stereotypes. I know this from experience, because so many people are shocked when they find out that I am gay.

I’m still not sure whether I made the right decision, but I am sure about two things. One, that the more you talk about it and the bigger deal you make about there being gay football players, the harder it becomes to make that bold move. And two, that I feel kind of stuck at the moment – I haven’t been sure whether to make that decision and come out to the boys at my club, whether it is worth the drama or not. I guess this column is my way of doing that.

[snip]

I don’t know whether footy is ready for an openly gay player. But events like those over recent weeks have helped me at least decide that it’s time I found out.

Australia: High Court strikes down marriage equality in the ACT

In the last five days, 27 same-sex couples have gotten married in the Australia Capital Territory (ACT.) Those marriages have just been ruled invalid.

Via the Australian:

The High Court has unanimously struck down the ACT’s gay marriage laws.

The decision will mean that about two dozen week-old marriages have no legal effect. The ACT Marriage Equality (Same Sex) laws passed the territory’s legislative assembly in October, but only came into effect last month and couples were required to provide four weeks’ notice before conducting wedding ceremonies.

As of today, about 20 couples have been married to date under the ACT’s laws, with the first ceremonies conducted on Saturday. Had the nation’s top court upheld the ACT’s gay marriage legislation it would have opened the door to similar laws being passed across the country, pressuring the government to make it legal at a national level.

The commonwealth government sought an expedited hearing in the High Court arguing the national capital’s laws were inconsistent with federal legislation and unconstitutional. Federal government lawyers argued in the High Court that the commonwealth marriage act was intended to ensure that state and territories did not operate as different countries when it came to determining whether a couple was married.

The High Court determined that the federal parliament has the power under the Australian constitution to legislate on same-sex marriage, and that whether or not same-sex marriages are legalised is a matter for the federal parliament.

New music: StrikeForce “One Day At A Time”

The brainchild of Steen James, StrikeForce’s debut single “One Day At A Time” features vocals by Yianna Stavrou – featured on Season 1 of Australia’s edition of “The Voice”, and has collaborated on tracks with Fabian Gray alongside her own solo projects.

With StrikeForce set up as a ‘‘think tank of creatives” led by James, future tracks will feature a variety of singers, writers & talent.

“One Day At A Time” originally started life with Australian producer Paul Wiltshire as a contemporary urban ballad, however the positive and uplifting lyrics and melodies offered more versatility & lent itself naturally to a “dance” vibe. In the hands of US based Producer/Remixer/DJ Mark Picchiotti, the song evolved into a feel good sing a long dance/pop anthem fusing elements of EDM & soulful house with gospel-tinged melodies.

The release also includes remixes by Jay-J, Club Junkies, JRMX and Pete Hammond.

Check out the official StrikeForce Facebook page.

World-wide release on November 18, 2013.  Check it out on iTunes.

Map of the United States as labeled by Australian who knows nothing about geography

This is making the rounds on the interwebs today. This is apparently a map of the United States as labeled by an Australian who has never been to the US, and clearly doesn’t know much geography.

Some of the state labels are very funny. Click on the pic to enlarge.

Australian Capitol Territory passes marriage equality

Australian Capitol Territory legalizes marriage equality

ABC News Australia reports that the Australian Capitol Territory (the Aussie version of Washington, DC) has passed marriage equality:

The Labor Government passed its Marriage Equality Same-Sex Bill in the Legislative Assembly with the help of Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury. The laws will allow an authorised celebrant to marry gay couples within the ACT, regardless of where they live. “I am proud to stand for equality. I am proud to stand for decency and I am proud to stand for respect,” Mr Rattenbury told the Assembly today. “Perhaps most simply I am proud to stand in support of the notion that two people who love each other should be able to get married.” Amendments were also passed to strengthen the laws against any challenge in the High Court. It is expected same-sex couples will be able to take advantage of the new laws before Christmas, after they give four weeks notice of their intent to marry.

The federal government plans to challenge the constitutionality of the bill in the High Court of Australia.

Gaia Retreat and Spa 2013

So, my husband Michael has been “down under” in Australia helping handle press for the opening of the final phase of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre.  You can see pics from those events here.

While there, since it’s SOOO far away, he is taking a few days for R&R at Olivia’s award-winning Gaia Retreat and Spa (World Luxury Spa Award, Conde Nast Traveller Award, Traveller’s Choice Awards, featured on Oprah, many more).

I got to visit there last year and it’s truly a beautiful place to disconnect, unwind and pamper yourself.  Located in the stunning hinterland region of Byron Bay, it’s hard to imagine a place more perfect for realigning yourself. Gorgeous day spa with every service you could want; the food served at Kukura House is fantastic and fab for you; there’s a gym; nearby beaches; name it, it’s there to help you unwind.

Whether you get a massage, head to a local beach, walk and relax on the property grounds, work out in the gym or hang out at Kukura House (the main building for meals and checking in), it’s not to be missed.

Here’s just some of the pics Michael took on this trip. If you’re ever in Australia looking to escape the stresses of daily life, make sure you check out what many call “magical” and “special.”
