Apple exceeds estimates for quarter – $39.2 billion
Apple’s market muscle held firm Tuesday as the company surpassed analysts’ estimates and set second-quarter records in its sales of iPhones, iPads and Macs.
The tech titan posted quarterly revenue of $39.2 billion — second only to its all-time, quarterly revenue record of $46.33 billion, which it reported last December.
For the March quarter, Apple reported a net profit of $11.6 billion — or 12.30 per diluted share. A consensus estimate previously gathered by Thomson Reuters had predicted Apple would post quarterly revenue of $38.9 billion and $10.10 per share.
I’m an Apple guy. I like the products and they work easily with each other. I can’t even use a PC.
Yes, Apple. Taking over the world one iPad at a time.
Three million new iPads sold in first weekend
Apple announced on Monday that it has sold 3 million new iPads since the device launch on March 16.
The company, which had cited “record” sales earlier in the day, has now backed up that boast. “The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of wordwide marketing, said in a press release from the company. “Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can’t wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.”
Laying out opening weekend results is fairly unusual for Apple, which typically waits until its quarterly meeting with analysts to outline such numbers.

Apple announces new iPad
Apple has today announced its new third-generation iPad, which comes packing a new high-resolution Retina display. “Until you see it you can’t understand how amazing it is”, said CEO Tim Cook.
The new iPad is priced at $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB. And $629, $729, and $829 for 4G. It will be available on March 16th in the US.
The new high-resolution display runs at 2048×1536 at a pixel density of 264PPI.
The new iPad maintains the current 10 hour battery life with 9 hours on 4G.
There is also a brand new feature in the iPad, an iSight camera on the front and a new rear camera that runs at 5MP. This allows the new iPad to record HD movies at 1080P.

Apple’s stock hits $500 a share
Apple’s stock topped $500 for the first time on Wall Street even as a probe started looking into work conditions at a Chinese factory that cranks out the California company’s coveted gadgets.
Apple shares gained 1.86 percent during the day, powered by reports a new iPad may be unveiled next month, to close at $502.60 and then inched up more in after-hours trading.
Despite the investigation into labor practices, Apple also continued to show its strength with consumers, dethroning Google in the annual Harris Poll RQ study as the company with the most respected image in the eyes of consumers.
The maker of iPhones, iPads, iPods and Macintosh computers got the highest score ever seen in the survey, which asks people to rate the reputations of 60 of the most well-known US companies.
Apple’s Steve Jobs passes away
Steve Jobs, who resigned as CEO of Apple for health reasons in August, has died, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company announced Wednesday.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.”
“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives,” Apple said in a statement.
“The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts,” the statement continued.
The company’s website featured a black and white photo of Jobs Wednesday with the years 1955-2011.
“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being,” the company’s website reads. “Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”
The company encouraged visitors to share “thoughts, memories, and condolences” by emailing rememberingsteve@apple.com.
Jobs stepped down from his position leading Apple in August, after a tumultuous period of a few years in which he battled pancreatic cancer and liver difficulties. He did retain a key role with the company, however, becoming chairman of the board two months ago.

From Apple today:
Apple today announced iPhone 4S, the most amazing iPhone yet, packed with new features like Apple’s dual-core A5 chip for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics; an 8MP camera with advanced optics; full 1080p HD resolution video recording; and Siri, an intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking. iPhone 4S also ships with iOS 5 — the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, with over 200 new features — and iCloud. Apple also today announced that iCloud — a breakthrough set of free cloud services that includes iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream, and Documents in the Cloud — will be available on October 12. iCloud stores your music, photos, apps, contacts, calendars, documents, and more, keeping them up to date across all your devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. When content changes on one device, all your other devices are updated automatically and wirelessly. Read more by clicking here.
Among the things announced that sound very cool are: the personal assistant software on the new iPhone “Siri” that through voice commands can send texts, set reminders, dial calls for you and a host of other things; and the iCloud actually looks very useful in that anything you download from iTunes gets sent automatically to all your Apple devices – no more manual syncing. Also, any photos you take with your iPhone get sent to your other Apple items.

Apple to launch iCloud
Apple today introduced iCloud, a set of free new cloud services that work seamlessly with applications on your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, or PC to automatically and wirelessly store your content and push it to all your devices.
iCloud services include new versions of Contact, Calendar, and Mail; iCloud Backup and Storage; Photo Stream; and iTunes in the Cloud.
And for $24.99 a year, iTunes Match will give you all of the benefits of iTunes in the Cloud for music you haven’t purchased from iTunes.
At first I didn’t really see the advantage to all this. But after reading more, a big plus is everything you download from iTunes to your computer (or iPhone or iPad) is automatically sent to your other computing devices, like your computer, iPad and/or iPhone. So you practically do nothing to keep all your devices synced.
Plus, everyone gets 5GB of storage FREE on the internet to store your stuff. AND your purchased music, apps, and books, as well as your “Photo Stream” don’t count against your free storage.
iCloud will be available this fall. A free beta version of iTunes in the Cloud is available today in the U.S. and requires iTunes 10.3 and iOS 4.3.3.
