NYC: Candlelight vigil held in West Village for shooting victim of anti-gay hate crime

Late last night, hundreds attended a candlelight vigil in Greenwich Village to remember Mark Carson, who was shot and killed in a hate crime just hours earlier. Speaker after speaker exhorted the crowd: “Say his name! Mark Carson, Mark Carson, MARK CARSON!”

The event was organized by Adam Feldman and speakers included activists Eugene Lovendusky, Robert Pinter, and Brendan Fay. Among the local politicos in attendance were state Sen. Brad Hoylman, state Assemblyman Micah Kellner, and City Council candidate Corey Johnson.

According to Joe Jervis at JoeMyGod, speaker after speaker exhorted the crowd: “Say his name!” Everybody: “Mark Carson, Mark Carson, MARK CARSON!”

On Monday there will be a rally at the LGBT Community Center at 5:30PM, followed by a march to the scene of the murder.

CNN has named the alleged suspect in custody. He reportedly confessed to the NYPD early this morning.

Around 4 a.m., a police officer, responding to a radio alert of the shooting, came across the alleged gunman and apprehended him. The suspect turned over a silver Taurus .38-caliber six-shot revolver, according to police.

Police later identified the suspect as Elliot Morales, 33. Police said the suspect had forged identification and they used facial recognition technology to determine his true identity.

Morales faces a charge of second-degree murder as a hate crime, authorities said. The identities of the suspect’s two companions — at least one of whom Kelly said left the suspect before the shooting — are still not known.

NYC: More details emerge in hate-crime shooting of 32 year old gay man

The NY Daily News has published the name and photo of last night’s victim of the fatal anti-gay hate crime last night in Greenwich Village.

Mark Carson, 32, was confronted, harrassed, then stalked and shot in the face by an as-yet unidentified assailant. The shooter was with two friends when he first approached Carson and his friend on Sixth Ave. about midnight, police said.

From the Daily News:

Sources said Carson and his 31-year-old friend were dressed in tank tops and cut-off shorts with boots. “Look at these faggots,” one of the suspect’s crew barked at the pair. “What are you, gay wrestlers?” The two groups exchanged words, but Carson and his pal decided it was better to walk away.

But as they turned the corner, the suspect and one of his cohorts confronted the pair again and taunted them by shouting “faggott” and “queer,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. One of the bigots got nervous and ran away as the suspect asked the two gay men, “Do you want to die here?” Kelly said. Suddenly, the suspect whipped out a silver .38-caliber revolver and shot Carson in the face. The shooter ran away as Carson collapsed on the sidewalk.

As emergency crews rushed Carson to Beth Israel Hospital, rookie cop Henry Huot was responding to the job and spotted the gunman at W. Third and MacDougal Sts. — where he ordered the suspect to stop.

The suspect was cuffed as Carson died on arrival at the hospital.

There will be a candle light vigil held at the scene of the crime tonight at midnight.

How DOMA hurts families – David and Jason

The anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act keeps legally married same-sex couples from having their relationships recognized by the Federal Government. Over 1,100 rights and benefits are denied these couples.

As an American, you are granted the right to obtain a green card for a foreign-born spouse – unless you are gay.

The DOMA Project works to stop deportations, separations, and exile of gay and lesbian binational couples caused by DOMA.

Meet David and Jason, a binational couple who have been separated 17 times under DOMA rules — despite being legally married in New York.

Starbucks would like to thank NOM for boycott leading it’s stock to 12 month high

On one hand, you have to give a little credit to “sticking with it” I guess.

On the other hand?  Well, on the other hand, after 12 months of the National Organization for Marriage’s “boycott” of Starbucks the company’s stock is at a 12 month high.

Oh – and congrats on Delaware, too, NOM – great work.  See you in Minnesota.

Pat Robertson: Gays can change just like rapists can…

“It is a hate crime to say somebody can change their sexual preference? … Anybody who has ministered to thousands of people…know very well that the power of God can change people’s orientation. A murderer can change. A rapist can change. A thief can change. That’s what the Gospel is about. It’s not a hate crime.” – Pat Robertson

Seriously?…

Pat – you gotta go there?

Highlights from Family Research Council’s “Stand with Scouts Sunday’

Highlights from the “Stand with Scouts Sunday” anti-gay hate-a-thon.

Do you like how one scout refers to gays as not being “clean?” Because homosexuality is supposedly “morally unclean.”

Quick observation – how many straight scouts do you think have sex before marriage? Is that “morally clean?” I don’t judge those scouts, but clearly there’s a double standard when it comes to what is or isn’t “clean” on a “moral” landscape.

Also – note how Tony Perkins throws out his dog whistle at 1:38 about “the evidence is beginning to mount” on gays in the military and DADT. That’s how these folks work. They repeat those talking points in a tone of voice that sounds factual and non-threatening, and the folks who listen hear it over and over.  Over time, it all becomes “fact” to them.

Rep. Steve Palazzo says gay “agitators” are trying to corrupt the Boy Scouts of America

In an ironic turnabout, Rep. Steve Palazzo (R-MS) on the “Stand with Scouts Sunday” webcast says the Boy Scouts of America – who currently discriminate against gay scouts – are the ones being “bullied,” “intimidated, extorted” and “harassed.”

He also references “the agitators” (that would be the evil ‘gays’) who are trying to ‘corrupt’ the BSA.

Because having openly gay scouts would represent “corruption” of some kind.

Someone should tell Rep. Palazzo that gays HAVE been taking part in Boy Scouts for decades. Just not openly.  “Hide who you are.” How is that for teaching values?

Matt Barber on Jason Collins’ “hero status” after coming out

In case you don’t see it very often, here’s an example of the kind of douche bag comments the “pro-marriage” anti-gay folks put out into the world in an effort to diminish LGBT rights.

This is Matt Barber writing for World Net Daily regarding NBA-er Jason Collins recent coming out:

“Collins had a girlfriend of eight years. In fact, they were engaged to be married before he dumped her. This would make him ‘bisexual,’ then, wouldn’t it?

“So – and bear with me here – if being “gay” makes him a hero, does being ‘bi’ make him a superhero? That. Is. Awesome! I don’t know: ‘Captain Switch-Hitter’? (Sorry for the mixed metaphor.)

“Then again, if he’s ‘bisexual,’ might that actually diminish his heroism? Would it make him only half a hero, or would it just cancel out altogether, making him ordinary again? It’s all so confusing.

“Seriously, I’d encourage the next pro athlete engaged in some other hitherto-considered-deviant-sexual-lifestyle to ride the wave. Who knows, in today’s ever-‘progressive’ culture, I could see President Obama awarding the Medal of Honor to the first polo player courageous enough to admit having a thing for his horse.”

Bryan Fischer: Discriminating against gays is good

One of “God’s gentle people” – Bryan Fischer of the hate group American Family Association – tells us that folks SHOULD discriminate against gays and lesbians. That discrimination is a good thing. (p.s. NO – it’s not).

Fischer is referring to Ohio Catholic high school physical education teacher Carla Hale, who lost her job after her lesbian partner’s name appeared in her mother’s obituary. She didn’t parade around as a “militant lesbian” or make anyone listen to her promote anything. She quietly lives her private life at home.

Just days after her mother’s funeral, Hale was fired after a complaint from an anonymous parent.

Hale had worked at Bishop Watterson High School for 19 years with no complaints before her dismissal.
