Supreme Court Declines To Block Texas Porn/Age Verification Law

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to block a 2023 Texas law requiring pornography websites to verify the age of their users. Although the law is aimed at limiting children’s access to sexually explicit content, adults are none too happy about uploading their IDs to adult entertainment sites. https://twitter.com/NBCPolitics/status/1785353552468021467 From AP News:

The justices rejected an emergency appeal filed by the Free Speech Coalition, a trade association for the adult entertainment industry. The provision of House Bill 1181, signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott, remains in effect even as the association’s full appeal is weighed by the Supreme Court.

There were no noted dissents from the court’s one-sentence order.

Similar age verification laws have passed in other states, including Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Oklahoma, Utah and Virginia.

The Texas law carries fines of up to $10,000 per violation that could be raised to up to $250,000 per violation by a minor.

Texas AG Ken Paxton has already sued three porn sites for not complying with the new law. Joe Jervis at JoeMyGod notes that “the largest of the three, Pornhub, has now blocked access to its site in Texas, resulting in an avalanche of web searches for VPN services.” https://twitter.com/JoeMyGod/status/1785351178806501886
