Speaker Johnson On Santos Expulsion: ‘We Have A Razor Thin Majority…’

Newly-anointed Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has already signaled his opposition to the proposed expulsion of truth-challenged gay Rep. George Santos (R-NY). As I reported here yesterday, six New York House Republicans have demanded a vote calling for expelling Santos from the House of Representatives due to his countless lies to his constituents, as well as the 23 criminal charges filed against him. In an interview with Fox News talking head Sean Hannity, Johnson brought up the oh-so-obvious:

“Here’s the reality, Sean. We have a four-seat majority in the House. It is possible that that number may be reduced even more in the coming weeks and months, and so we will have what may be the most razor-thin majority in the history of the Congress. We have no margin for error.

“And so George Santos is due ‘due process’… We have to allow due process to play itself out. That’s what our system of justice is for. If we’re going to expel people from Congress just because they’re accused, that’s a problem.”

https://twitter.com/Acyn/status/1717718985725124915 A vote on expulsion requires a 2/3s majority to pass. If I’m doing the math correctly, it will take all 212 House Democrats plus 75 House Republicans to remove Santos. The Republicans hold a narrow 4-vote majority. Are 75 Republicans willing to boot Santos and thereby reduce their majority to 3 votes? I’m not thinking so. IF Republicans had a larger majority, would they vote him out then? What Johnson doesn’t mention in regard to “due process” is the House isn’t a court of law. The members can vote someone out (with a 2/3s majority) even if they haven’t broken a law but acted unethically. And I’m pretty sure we can all agree by now Santos’s many lies to the world constitute “unethical.”
