A group of New York House Republicans has filed a formal demand to expel truth-challenged gay Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY) made a formal demand to vote on the expulsion today, requiring Speaker Mike Johnson to call a vote within two legislative days. The House is leaving Thursday for a long weekend and is set to return to work on Wednesday. As he introduced his resolution, he specifically made mention of Santos’s “history of misrepresenting his and his family’s connections to major events, including the Holocaust, 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the Pulse nightclub shooting.” https://twitter.com/therecount/status/1717650885289894163 “George Santos is a liar and a fraud who should not be a member of Congress,” Republican Rep. Marc Molinaro told CBS News. “Since he won’t resign and with the House Ethics Committee not moving at the pace we had hoped, we’re adjusting our approach and pushing forward a resolution to expel him.” A two-thirds majority is required to pass an expulsion resolution, admittedly a high bar the dysfunctional House is unlikely to clear. All 212 House Democrats plus around 87 House Republicans would have to support the resolution. With only a four-vote majority in the chamber, are House Republicans willing to reduce that to three? But it looks like there’s only upside for the New York Republicans to move forward on the resolution. Many of them are in purple districts that voted for President Joe Biden. So, the resolution is a highly visible way of distancing themselves from a colleague who’s currently facing 23 criminal indictments.
