The U.S. Senate voted 53-47 to bring the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the US Supreme Court to the full Senate after the judiciary committee deadlocked with an 11-11 tie.

Over the past five decades, the panel has deadlocked just once – over the nomination of Clarence Thomas, who was facing sexual harassment allegations. According to ABC News, the tie vote forced Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to file a “discharge motion” to bring the nomination before the full Senate in order to get it out of committee. The Senate’s 53-47 vote means Jackson’s final confirmation could come sometime this week. She will be the first Black female member of the U.S. Supreme Court. Those 53 votes included Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Mitt Romney of Utah, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska – all who have declared their support for Jackson. Romney and Murkowski announced their votes today joining Collins who declared her support for Jackson last week. Assuming the Democrats all vote to approve Jackson, the judge should receive at least 53 ‘yay’ votes.
