State Sen. Sarah McBride of Delaware won the Democratic Primary for Delaware’s lone U.S. House seat last night with nearly 80% of the vote. The win means McBride is poised to become the country’s first openly transgender member of Congress. At the Democratic National Convention in 2016, McBride became the first openly trans person to speak at a major political convention. First elected to represent Delaware’s 1st Senate District in 2020, she won reelection in 2022 running unopposed. Last night, she coasted to victory over two businessmen, Elias Weir and Earl Cooper. Democrats have held the House seat since 2010, sho she’s heavily favored to win in the general election where she’ll face retired State Police officer and construction company owner James Whalen. The House seat is currently held by Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D), who is running for U.S. Senate.
With a heart full of hope – and because of tens of thousands of Delawareans who turned out to the polls – tonight I’m proud to become the Democratic nominee for Delaware’s sole seat in the United States House of Representatives. Thank you, Delaware! pic.twitter.com/aqIvmZ8Vv5
