According to the first New York Times/Siena College poll of the 2024 campaign, Donald Trump is trouncing the other GOP wannabes by a wide margin.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis trails Trump by 37 points nationally among likely primary voters with Trump garnering 54% support and DeSantis way back at 17%. The other contenders received 3% or less.
Even if those others all dropped out and their support shifted to DeSantis, he would still trail by 24 points.
New York Times chief political analyst Nate Cohn adds this: “In the half century of modern presidential primaries, no candidate who led his or her nearest rival by at least 20 points at this stage has ever lost a party nomination.”
