The parents of Ethan Crumbley, the Michigan teen who shot and killed four classmates at Oxford High School, were sentenced to 10-15 years in prison today after being found guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter in separate trials earlier this year. https://twitter.com/ABC/status/1777742004350230844 Prosecutors charged the parents with involuntary manslaughter, saying they failed to act on troubling signs. The gun used in the alleged murders – a semiautomatic 9-millimeter Sig Sauer handgun – was an early Christmas gift to their son Ethan from his parents. It was reportedly stored unlocked in his parents’ bedroom. Jennifer and James Crumbley were sentenced immediately following several emotional impact statements from the parents of the victims. The parents have served 858 days in jail while awaiting trial, which will be deducted from their sentence. Judge Cheryl Matthews also instructed the Crumbleys to have no contact with the families of the victims. More from ABC News:
The trials were a rare case of parents facing criminal charges, and possible jail time, over their role in a shooting carried out by their child.
They could have faced up to 15 years in prison for each count, but prosecutors asked for 10 to 15 years total for each parent, according to a sentencing memo filed by prosecutors last week.
Jennifer Crumbley’s attorneys had asked that she be sentenced to time served and house arrest, according to the defense’s sentencing memo.
James Crumbley’s lawyers asked for 28 months of prison — the amount of time he has already spent locked up — with credit for time served as well as the maximum period of supervised release.
Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 years old at the time of the shooting on November 30, 2021, is currently serving a life sentence in prison without parole after pleading guilty to 24 charges, including first-degree premeditated murder. https://twitter.com/jerrieskid/status/1777745131032006745 Just hours before the shooting, a teacher reportedly saw a note on Ethan’s desk that was “a drawing of a semi-automatic handgun pointing at the words, ‘The thoughts won’t stop, help me.'” The note also included a drawing of a bullet with the following words above that bullet, “Blood everywhere.” The parents were called to the school regarding the incident. They reportedly told school officials they’d get their son counseling but did not take him home. https://twitter.com/therecount/status/1777747064333463866
