File this under “Making a bad thing worse.” Adolfo Martinez is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence after ripping down and burning a Pride flag flying at the Ames United Church of Christ in Ames, Iowa, last summer. But Martinez isn’t content to simply serve his time. The Ames Tribune reports an internal investigation reviewing jail footage found “multiple incidents where he made ‘inappropriate’ comments and performed sex acts in front of various female detention officers from Nov. 23, 2019, to Dec. 19. 2019.” Martinez allegedly told a female guard “you smell freaking good” on November 30. Video footage from later that day showed the 30-year-old standing in the middle of his cell “performing a sex act with his pants off.” That same night, Martinez allegedly repeated the ‘sex act’ before guards conducted a security check. During the security act, a female officer reports he sat on his bed and performed another ‘sex act’ while smiling at the guard. According to a criminal complaint filed against Martinez the guard communicated with him over the jail’s intercom system informing him “If the behavior continued, he could be charged, to which he responded, ‘Oh, I know.’”

The Tribune notes that indecent exposure is a serious misdemeanor in Iowa. If found guilty, a judge could choose to add another year to his already considerable sentence. Martinez admitted he committed the June flag burning crime during a television interview with local news station KCCI. “I’m guilty, I’m guilty as charged,” he proudly announced. “I’ll say it on camera as well. Live! Let it be known. I’m guilty as charged plain and simple. Knowingly, willingly, and intentionally did I do that. Yep. It’s my honor.” “It is a judgment and it is written to execute vengeance on the heathen and punishments upon the people… and it is my honor to do so,” he continued. “It’s a blessing from the Lord to be able to stand for his word firmly against all odds, plain and simple.” The TV interview was played at his trial as evidence. Martinez was found guilty of a hate crime, third-degree harassment, and reckless use of fire (arson) as a habitual offender. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison due to previous offenses. For intoning his religious beliefs in the KCCI interview, Martinez became something of a cause celebre for Christian activists. A Christian website, LifeSiteNews, launched a petition calling the sentence ‘excessive’ and urged the Iowa Court of Appeals to “step in and reduce this disproportionate sentence!” We’re curious if the good Christians at LifeSiteNews will continue their unbridled support after Martinez’s latest antics. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Martinez to appear in court on February 24. (source: Ames Tribune)

Obama Triggers Trump Over Economic Results

Former President Barack Obama took to Twitter on Monday to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The $800 billion stimulus package paved “the way for more than a decade of economic growth and the longest streak of job creation in American history.” But the tweet apparently triggered Donald Trump, who constantly takes credit for the “greatest economy in the history of our country.” Trump frequently mentions the economy as he campaigns in his bid for reelection. A few facts from CNN: The average monthly job growth has declined from 224,000 during Obama’s last three years to 182,000 during Trump’s first three. The unemployment rate has fallen to 3.6% last month from 4.7% in January 2017 as Trump took office. Yet that merely continued the trend of the last six years of Obama’s term. Since Trump assumed the presidency in January 2017, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen by 47%, as of about 3 p.m. ET on Tuesday. During Obama’s second term, the Dow rose 44%.

Boy Scouts Files For Bankruptcy In Preparation For Sex Abuse Lawsuits

With enormous legal costs looming ahead due to sexual abuse allegations, the Boy Scouts of America has filed for bankruptcy protection. The BSA filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 bankruptcy laws reports the Washington Post. The move comes as the organization scrambles to handle thousands of claims from potential victims who say they were abused as Scouts. Membership in the 110-year-old organization has dropped dramatically since the 1970s when the BSA had nearly five million members. Today, the organization reports only half that. In response, the Boy Scouts have attempted to change with the times by adjusting membership requirements. In 2013, openly gay scouts were allowed to take part, followed by openly gay leaders in 2015. And in 2017, rules were changed to allow girls to participate. But over the last decade, media investigations and lawsuits have uncovered internal Boy Scout documents that reportedly show years and years of alleged abusers were accused of preying on Scouts. Legal teams across the U.S. have begun signing up clients in anticipation of lawsuits. One lawyer, Michael Pfau, says he now represents nearly 300 alleged victims. He says the bankruptcy filing “is an acknowledgment finally on the part of the Boy Scouts that they had this enormous problem and the problem is so large they can’t deal with it themselves.” According to the New York Times, the legal maneuver is “likely to freeze the lawsuits against the group and set a deadline for filing any more claims.”

“The BSA cares deeply about all victims of abuse and sincerely apologizes to anyone who was harmed during their time in Scouting,” Roger Mosby, the president and CEO of the Boy Scouts of America, said in a statement released shortly after midnight Tuesday. “While we know nothing can undo the tragic abuse that victims suffered, we believe the Chapter 11 process — with the proposed Trust structure — will provide equitable compensation to all victims while maintaining the BSA’s important mission.” BSA’s national chairman, Jim Turley, said the organization isn’t trying to avoid responsibility for compensating victims but plans to do so through a victim’s compensation trust as opposed to piecemeal lawsuits. “I want you to know that we believe you, we believe in compensating you, and we have programs in place to pay for counseling for you and your family by a provider of your choice,” read Turley’s statement in part. Some of the files that came to light were released in an Oregon case where a jury ultimately held the Scouts liable for $18.5 million in punitive damages in 2010. A group called Abused in Scouting has been reaching out to individuals who were abused as scouts urging them to come forward. They report finding nearly 2,000 people with complaints. But time could be of the essence as time limits in bankruptcy cases often have windows of between three to nine months to come forward. Additionally, statutes of limitations have been a problem for some folks who were sexually abused many years ago. But several states have moved to set aside those limitations temporarily for sexual abuse victims. New York state passed a one-year window for such filings last summer, and New Jersey put in place a two-year window in December. Tim Kosnoff, a lawyer for Abused in Scouting, told the Times, “If you’ve ever considered coming forward, now is the time.” It’s worth noting today’s bankruptcy filing is a response to alleged sexual abuse that happened long before openly LGBTQ people were allowed to participate. In nearly all of the cases, the alleged abuse occurred decades ago in Boy Scout chapters that were operated by Christian churches. That said, this writer fully expects the virulently anti-LGBTQ activists to seize on these developments and somehow try to blame the advent of openly gay scouts and leaders.

Legal experts say they see parallels between the Boy Scouts and other organizations that have looked to bankruptcy filings to cope with numerous lawsuits involving sex abuse scandals.

USA Gymnastics filed for bankruptcy in 2018 after 350 sexual assault victims came forward accusing team physician Larry Nassar of inappropriate behavior. And several Catholic dioceses did the same after clergy were accused of covering up sexual abuse of children spanning decades.

Parody: Randy Rainbow ‘There Are No Rules For Donald’

Political satirist Randy Rainbow is back to brighten our week with his new video, “No Rules For Donald.” The song is a parody of the smash hit “New Rules” by Dua Lipa. As some of the commenters on the YouTube page noted, this is slightly darker than earlier parodies which is perhaps as it should be. There’s not much funny about this situation anymore.

Check out these two – a President’s Day spot that contrasts the dignity and uplift of previous presidents to the current occupant of the Oval office. The second highlights the overly-aggressive trolling by so-called ‘Bernie Bros’ who routinely attack anyone who doesn’t support their guy.

Politico: Bernie Sanders Is Becoming Harder To Stop

Sen. Bernie Sanders solid base is serving him well as the more centrist Democrats splinter the rest of the race. Reporting from Nevada, Politico writes that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)  is becoming harder to stop and “his opponents are starting to realize it.”

Advisers to three rival campaigns privately conceded over the weekend that the best anyone else could hope for here is second or third.

While few expect that Sanders can carry more than a third of the vote in Nevada, nearly everyone believes that will be enough to win in a field where the moderate vote remains splintered. It is becoming a source of celebration for Sanders’ supporters and an urgent problem for those who want to prevent him from claiming the nomination.
