UK Supreme Court Rules In Favor Of Anti-Gay Northern Ireland Bakers

Amy and Daniel McArthur of Ashers Baking Company

In 2014, the Northern Ireland Equality Commission brought a lawsuit against Ashers Baking Company on behalf of LGBTQ activist Gareth Lee who had gone to the bakery to order a cake for a private function to be held observing International Day Against Homophobia.

Lee asked that the cake feature Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie and bear the message “support gay marriage.”

The owners of Ashers Bakery, Daniel and Amy McArthur, originally accepted the cake order.

But Amy McArthur later contacted the man who ordered it and said they could not make such a cake “in conscience.”

The McArthurs have maintained that the issue was not the customer but the message.

The BBC reports that back in May, Daniel McArthur told the press while standing in front of the court house, “We didn’t say no because of the customer; we’d served him before, we’d serve him again. It was because of the message. But some people want the law to make us support something with which we disagree.”

After two earlier court cases, the UK Supreme Court has now ruled in the bakers’ favor overturning a £500 damages award imposed on the bakery owners.

The five justices of the high court were unanimous in their ruling seeing the issue as not one of gay discrimination but one of freedom of expression.

Lady Hale wrote the decision.

From The Guardian:

“It is deeply humiliating, and an affront to human dignity, to deny someone a service because of that person’s race, gender, disability, sexual orientation or any of the other protected personal characteristics,” Hale said in the judgment.

“But that is not what happened in this case and it does the project of equal treatment no favours to seek to extend it beyond its proper scope.”

Freedom of expression, as guaranteed by article 10 of the European convention on human rights, includes the right “not to express an opinion which one does not hold”, Hale added. “This court has held that nobody should be forced to have or express a political opinion in which he does not believe,” she said.

The McArthurs expressed relief for the ruling, saying, “We are very grateful to the judges. We did not turn down this order because of the person who made it, but because of the message itself.”

Lee, however, says he feels “confused about what this actually means.”

“We need certainty when you go to a business,” he told The Guardian. “I’m concerned that this has implications for myself and for every single person.”

The original decision to turn down his order had left him feeling like a “second-class citizen”, he said.

Lee’s last option would be to appeal to the European court of human rights in Strasbourg.

It’s worth noting that Northern Ireland is the only place in the UK where same-sex marriage is not legal.

If this sounds familiar, it should.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court narrowly ruled in favor of Jack Phillips, owner of the Masterpiece Cakeshop in Colorado, who refused to sell a cake to a gay couple celebrating their wedding.

In the U.S. case, the high court decided that a Colorado state agency had approached the case with religious bias. In the ruling, SCOTUS asked the Colorado Civil Rights Commission to re-examine the case.

Broadway/YouTube Star Todrick Hall Goes On Epic Breakup Rant To His Million+ Instagram Fans

Todrick Hall (via Instagram)

Back in the day, when a boyfriend cheated on you, you would break up and then call your besties to tell the sad tale.

But in today’s world of social media, some folks tell the WORLD.

Todrick Hall first garnered national attention in 2010 as a contestant on American Idol, and has gone on to release two studio albums, develop a YouTube channel which has almost 3 million subscribers, star on Broadway in Kinky Boots and Chicago the Musical as well as appear on RuPaul’s Drag Race as a judge and choreographer.

Todrick took to social media last night to read his newly-kicked-to-the-curb ex-boyfriend for filth on his Instagram story in an epic rant.

He began by sharing his new rules for applying for the position of “boyfriend” with his 1.2 million followers.

The first ‘new rule’ is something sensible, like needing someone to be able to express themselves in a mature manner and not “hold in their feelings.”

From there, things escalate.

The next ‘new rule’ reads “Must not come on tour with me, meet other guys, start sleeping with them and give them comp tickets to my show particularly on days when I’m burying my relatives.”

Yikes!

And Todrick is just getting started.

“Must not lie to me about what they’re doing when they’re sleeping with me when they’re new secret side fling isn’t around.”

Rule number 5 reads, “Must not allow me to fly them all over the world so that they can do jobs and make money while sneaking away multiple times to go “not hang out with their ex” while he’s conveniently in town and then crawl back into the house looking shady and guilty as f**k at 6 am.”

After several more ‘new rules,’ Todrick goes into full-on burn mode addressing the ex directly saying “you used me, made me feel like sh*t.”

The actor/singer/dancer tells the ex, “It is taking everything in me to not go Kim Chi on a b*tch and just post, tag and blast your shady ass you little b*tch.”

He quickly adds, “But give me one reason, ONE REASON and I will annihilate you.”

There was much more after that as Todrick posted pics of the former bf labeling him “liar” and more.

The 33-year-old YouTube star closed by sharing that he’s “legit shaking,” adding “I haven’t been this pissed in over a decade.”

He also shares that while he’s usually a ‘high road’ kind of guy, “I have to stand up for myself this time and say how I truly feel.”

I’d say mission accomplished.

The lesson of the day? Do not cheat on Mr. Todrick Hall.

He will not suffer fools lightly.

An industrious YouTuber put the entire rant into one video. You can watch it all unfold below.

Trump Lies Throughout USA Today Op-Ed

In an op-ed for USA Today, Donald Trump tells lie after lie regarding Democrats and health care.

Trump leads with a lie right at the start saying Democrats “want to outlaw private health care plans, taking away freedom to choose plans while letting anyone cross our border.”

Dishonestly called “Medicare for All,” the Democratic proposal would establish a government-run, single-payer health care system that eliminates all private and employer-based health care plans and would cost an astonishing $32.6 trillion during its first 10 years.

As a candidate, I promised that we would protect coverage for patients with pre-existing conditions and create new health care insurance options that would lower premiums. I have kept that promise, and we are now seeing health insurance premiums coming down.

I also made a solemn promise to our great seniors to protect Medicare. That is why I am fighting so hard against the Democrats’ plan that would eviscerate Medicare. Democrats have already harmed seniors by slashing Medicare by more than $800 billion over 10 years to pay for Obamacare. Likewise, Democrats would gut Medicare with their planned government takeover of American health care.

Democrats haven’t ‘slashed’ Medicare spending. How could they? They don’t control Congress.

Trump proposed $350 billion in net Medicare cuts in his budget and there were about $540 billion in Medicare cuts in the House GOP budget plan.

Also, Democrats have never said they want to ‘outlaw’ private health care plans.

And finally, Democrats as a party have never campaigned for totally open borders.

It’s just lie after lie after lie with Trump.

Polls: Democrats Lead By 10 Points In Latest Generic Ballot Survey

The latest polling from Morning Consult shows Democrats have now opened up a 10-point lead on the generic ballot with less than a month before the midterm elections.

The survey shows 48% of voters prefer a Democratic candidate versus 38% saying they prefer a Republican.

That’s the highest approval for Democrats in this election cycle’s polling by Morning Consult going back to March of 2017.

Additionally, a new CNN poll shows likely voters favor the Democratic Party’s candidate for Congress 54% to 41% over the GOP candidate.

Taylor Swift’s Call To Vote Inspires Huge Spike in Voter Registration

Taylor Swift (image via Instagram)

After becoming the most decorated female artist in American Music Awards history last night (22 trophies now), pop superstar Taylor Swift continued to raise her newly-found political voice telling the AMA audience to “get out and vote.”

“This award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people, and you know what else is voted on by the people?,” said Swift as she accepted the ‘Artist of the Year’ award. “The midterm elections on November 6.”

As reported earlier here, Swift took to her Instagram account Sunday night to not only urge people to register and vote, but she enthusiastically endorsed two Democrats in her home state of Tennessee.

Along the way, she also denounced Republican Senate candidate, Marsha Blackburn for her anti-LGBTQ and anti-abortion positions.

“I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country,” Swift said. “I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG.”

The post has garnered over 2 million ‘likes’ since Sunday.

In less than two days, Vote.org (which helps register voters) saw a huge spike (240,000) in registrations, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

To put that into perspective, 190,178 registered in the entire month of September.

In Tennessee, there was a corresponding reaction.

In the past two days, Vote.org saw 2,144 registrations in Tennessee. Compare that with 2,811 new Tennessee voter registrations for the entire month of September and just 951 in August.

I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway. So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! 🗳😃🌈A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on Oct 7, 2018 at 4:33pm PDT

2019 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominations Are Out!

Janet Jackson (image via Twitter)

The nominations for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2019 have been announced.

Making the list this year are Radiohead, Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks, Rage Against the Machine, the Cure, Devo, Janet Jackson, Kraftwerk, LL Cool J, Roxy Music, Todd Rundgren, John Prine, MC5, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan and the Zombies.

Billboard Magazine gives Radiohead, Stevie Nicks, Janet Jackson and the Zombies the leading edge – but who knows?

For those who may be wondering, no, Janet isn’t a ‘rock act’ so to speak. But Madonna has gotten the honor as has Donna Summer. So I’m an emphatic ‘yes’ when it comes to giving Janet the nod.

Look for the announcement for this year’s inductees to be made in December with the ceremonial induction scheduled for March 29th, 2019 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

HBO has announced a broadcast of the event for some time next year.

Trump “Apologizes” To Brett Kavanaugh, Falsely Claims He Was “Proven Innocent”

At a ceremonial swearing in at the White House last night, Donald Trump falsely claimed that newly-installed Justice Brett Kavanaugh had been “proven innocent” of the allegations of sexual misconduct brought against him by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

Trump claimed the allegations were based on “lies and deceptions.”

Said Trump:

“On behalf of our nation, I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure. Those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation, not a campaign of personal and political destruction based on lies and deception.

“What happened to the Kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency and due process. In our country, a man or a woman must always be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

“And with that, I must state that you, sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent.”

The Trumpster literally can’t stop himself from lying, as if by saying something over and over again he can create his own reality.

San Francisco Man Contracts HIV Despite Regular Adherence To PrEP

A 21-year-old Latinx man in San Francisco, California, has contracted HIV despite adhering to a daily PrEP regime.

According to TheBodyPro.com, he is the first known HIV seroconversion with verified adherence to PrEP in the United States,

Medical experts were informed of the news at the annual IDWeek conference, run by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, this past weekend in San Francisco.

Reports show the man began PrEP through a city health clinic in San Francisco in late 2016. At the time, he was confirmed to be HIV negative.

Repeat testing during return visits at the three, six and ten month marks showed he had been consistent in taking the medication and he remained HIV negative. By analyzing samples of his hair, doctors were able to confirm he had adhered to the PrEP regime on a regular basis for the previous six months.

In early 2018, during a followup visit, he tested negative through a rapid test, but a more comprehensive RNA test came back positive. Further testing showed he was indeed HIV positive.

He was immediately placed on HIV medications and his viral load was suppressed where it has remained since treatment began.

Health care experts were able to identify that the man had acquired a particularly resistant strain of HIV usually identified with those who have begun treatment with HIV medications but stopped.

Researchers were able to determine that the man’s primary male partner had been diagnosed with HIV, used medications for a period of time but had stopped. His viral load was found to be very high and matched the 21-year-old’s strain. He has since returned to treatment.

This marks the sixth reported case of HIV infection while using PrEP.

Four cases, two in 2016 in New York and Toronto, and two in 2017 in North Carolina and Australia, are believed to be due to exposure to high viral loads of resistant strains of HIV.

Medical experts believe the fifth previous case, in Amsterdam, was the result of a gay man having “unusually high number” of sexual partners – an average of 56 partners a month – which may have repeatedly exposed him to HIV, according to aidsmap.com.

Even in light of this new report, health care professionals insist PrEP (currently being taken on a regular basis by over 350,000 people around the world) is extremely effective in combating HIV infection.

“We know PrEP is greater than 99% effective,” Robert Grant, M.D. of the University of California San Francisco told TheBodyPro.com.

“There are some cases where HIV will break through. We only have a handful of cases now, and next year, we’ll probably have a handful more. Fortunately, these cases are caught early, treated, and suppressed quickly. The person goes from taking one pill a day to one pill a day. The biggest difference is stigma.”

Nikki Haley Resigns As U.S. Ambassador To United Nations

Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, has resigned her position and will leave her post by the end of the year.

Via Reuters:

Sitting beside Trump in the Oval Office, Haley said her 18-month stint at the United Nations had been “an honor of a lifetime” and said she would stay on until the end of the year.

A former governor of South Carolina who is the daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley is the highest profile woman in Trump’s Cabinet and is often seen as a possible presidential candidate.

But she said in her resignation letter to Trump she would “surely not be a candidate for any office in 2020” and would support his re-election bid.

She told reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday: “No, I am not running for 2020.”

According to Axios‘ Jonathan Swan, who broke the story, several senior administration officials were caught off-guard by the announcement and no one seems to know the real backstory.

Although she denies the rumors, many hypothesize that Haley is stepping away to get ready for a possible challenge to Trump as Republican nominee for president in 2020.

Donald Trump is already floating his daughter Ivanka’s name as a possible replacement at the UN.
