Majority Of Trump Voters Support Extending Obamacare Subsidies

As we head into Day Three of the federal government shutdown, Senators will try again to reopen the federal government with votes on funding bills scheduled this afternoon.

Behind the scenes, dealmakers from both sides of the political spectrum are attempting to come up with a deal that could get enough Democrats to support a funding measure.

One consideration is a shorter funding extension through Oct. 31, which Democrats say could keep pressure on Republicans to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies — originally put in place during covid-19 — before the open enrollment period begins on Nov. 1.

For instance, here in my state, Nevadans who get insurance through Nevada Health Link, the state’s Affordable Care Act marketplace, are facing premium rate hikes of 26%. The big reason for the increases: expiration of enhanced federal premium subsidies, which got axed in Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill.

Extending the subsidies has been one of Democrats’ primary demands and they refuse to fund the government until Republicans negotiate with them on health care.

AND – according to a new poll by policy research group KFF – most of Trump’s supporters want the subsidies extended as well.

More from NBC News:

More than 22 million people receive the subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of the year unless Congress extends them. Losing the subsidies could mean that average out-of-pocket premium payments could double in 2026, from $888 a year to $1,904, an earlier KFF analysis found.

The new survey found 59% of Republicans and 57% of “Make American Great Again” supporters favor extending the enhanced subsidies. Overall, more than three-quarters of the public — 78% — say they want Congress to extend them. That includes 92% of Democrats and 82% of independents.
