Trump Fires Kristi Noem As Homeland Security Secretary

Donald Trump fired Kristi Noem as his homeland security secretary today and announced plans to replace her with Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) after her disastrous week of intense questioning from Republican lawmakers during congressional hearings.

This comes after Noem was grilled on multiple issues by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle during her two days  of testimony before House and Senate committees.

No one on the Hill had been thrilled with Noem’s tenure at DHS with frustrations running the gamut from how she handled mass deportations, to her reaction to ICE agents killing two citizens in Minneapolis, to exorbitant agency spending on advertising, and her slow-walking critical FEMA funds.

Earlier this morning, Punchbowl News reported Trump had been calling various Republican senators about replacing Noem.

Sources told PN that the Donald was “especially upset” about Noem’s response about a $220 million government-funded ad campaign that appears to have only served to boost her own personal name recognition nationally.

More from the New York Times:

Her tenure had been marked by a string of controversies, and her fate had been the focus of speculation among Mr. Trump’s allies for several weeks.

On Thursday, the president contradicted remarks that Ms. Noem made under penalty of perjury in her hearing before a Senate panel on Wednesday: that Mr. Trump had signed off on a border security advertising campaign featuring Ms. Noem.

“I never knew anything about it,” Mr. Trump told Reuters. A White House spokeswoman declined to comment, and referred a reporter to Mr. Trump’s comments to Reuters.

Ms. Noem has faced scrutiny from lawmakers about the campaign, on which the government spent $220 million. The firm handling it was connected to the husband of Ms. Noem’s former spokeswoman.

Trump is reportedly very close with Mullin and speaks to him regularly.

Noem also had embarrassing moments during the House hearing yesterday where she repeatedly dodged dodged dodged questions about having sexual relations with her “special government employee” Corey Lewandowski.

In his announcement, Trump says Noem “will be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday in Doral, Florida.”
