A federal judge has temporarily blocked President Trump’s executive order to end automatic citizenship to babies born on American soil ( aka birthright citizenship) which is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. State attorneys general from Washington, Illinois, Oregon and Arizona argued that Trump’s order would deny rights and benefits to more than 150,000 children born each year and leave some of them stateless. During the hearing, Federal District Court Judge John C. Coughenour (appointed by President Reagan) sided with the four states who filed the lawsuit saying, “This is a blatantly unconstitutional order.” The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution grants full citizenship to all persons “born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” That provision has been interpreted for decades to grant American citizenship to everyone born in the U.S. Read more here.
The ruling bars U.S. agencies from implementing the order to end birthright citizenship for children born to migrants in the U.S. temporarily or without legal status while the case is under review. [image or embed]
