The 2025 Oscars have been announced and there’s some serious LGBTQ+ representation in major categories. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez – about a transgender Mexican cartel leader – tops the list with a total of 13 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (trans actress Karla Sofía Gascón), and Best Featured Actress. The landslide makes Emilia Pérez the most nominated foreign film in the history of the Academy Awards, and Gascón the first out trans actress to be nominated at the Oscars. Tied with The Brutalist, Wicked scored the second-most nominations with 10 nods including Best Picture, Best Actress (out actress Cynthia Erivo) and Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande).

Folks were very surprised that the documentary Will & Harper – which tells the moving story of comedian Will Ferrell and his longtime friend Harper Steele, who came out as trans after decades of friendship, on a road trip across the U.S. – was snubbed. Also snubbed this year: the tennis-themed drama Challengers featuring a bisexual romantic triangle, and Daniel Craig’s performance in Queer, both directed by Luca Guadagnino.
