The Bureau of Labor Statistics issued its latest jobs report today showing 130,000 jobs were created in the U.S. in January, more than projected.
Hiring increased sharply at the outset of 2026, the year’s first jobs report said, blowing past economists’ expectations and besting sluggish performance from the previous year.

Keeping in mind that Trump constantly says things are soooooooooo much better now than under Biden, here’s a few more points from today’s jobs report to consider:
• The unemployment rate (4.3%) and the number of unemployed people (7.4 million) changed little in January. But these measures are higher than a year earlier, when the jobless rate was 4.0% and the number of unemployed people was 6.9 million.
• The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) changed little in January at 1.8 million but is up by 386,000 from a year earlier.
• The number of people employed part time for economic reasons decreased by 453,000 to 4.9 million in January, but is up by 410,000 over the year.
• Additionally, the jobs number for November was revised down by 15,000, from +56,000 to +41,000, and the number for December was revised down by 2,000, from +50,000 to +48,000.
Overall, with revisions, the U.S. economy added 181,000 jobs in 2025, down from the earlier estimate of 584,000.
So, Team Trump’s celebratory statement declaring “private sector job growth remains robust” is a bit misleading. “Remains…?”
