Since the beginning of the pandemic, Danny Lemoi, 50, has been a strong proponent of taking veterinary-grade ivermectin as a “cure” for COVID-19.

On March 3, 2023, the ivermectin influencer died unexpectedly. While no cause of death was listed in his obituary, many believe he may have passed due to known side effects of the drug.

In 2021, Lemoi launched one of the largest Telegram channels promoting the use of the medication, including instructions on how to administer ivermectin to children.

Note: Veterinary ivermectin is not an effective treatment for COVID. The FDA has issued strong warnings against using the drug because it is designed for large animals like horses and cows. “Such high doses can be highly toxic in humans,” the FDA cautions.

Ivermectin became all the rage among anti-vaxxers during the pandemic. Many shared on social media how they were taking the veterinary formulation of the drug, as opposed to the version actually designed for humans.

While ivermectin for humans is used to treat serious illnesses like river blindness, study after study shows the drug to be ineffective against COVID-19.

In March 2022, the largest trail to date on ivermectin showed it was no better than placebos in preventing hospitalizations for COVID-19.

According to the Missouri Poison Center, taking the animal version of ivermectin can lead to serious side effects including seizures, coma, lung issues, and heart problems.

Some of Lemoi’s followers in his pro-ivermectin Telegram group reported experiencing various side effects from taking the drug. One member of the group wrote about experiencing pain in their waist, legs, and bones, while another member’s wife had severe symptoms such as a migraine, vomiting, and stomach pain.
