House Passes Stopgap Spending Bill Thanks To Dems

Even though the House of Representatives is currently in Republican control, it was the Democrats that helped newly-elevated Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) in passing legislation that will keep the government running into early 2024. Speaker Johnson’s bill extends funding in 2 stages to January 19 & February 2 at current levels with 1-yr extension of farm programs. https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1724563154129043459 From the New York Times:

A coalition of Democrats and mainstream Republicans overcame the opposition of G.O.P. conservatives to approve the bill under special expedited procedures that required a supermajority.

That approach, hatched by Speaker Mike Johnson, amounted to a gamble that a substantial number of Democrats would rally to help pass a package that Mr. Johnson’s own party was unwilling to back.

The vote was 336 to 95, clearing the two-thirds threshold required for passage. In the end, 209 Democrats and 127 Republicans joined to pass the bill. Ninety-three Republicans opposed it, as did two Democrats.

Democrats voted for the measure, in great part, because the legislation contained no spending cuts and allowed for the clearest and most expedient way forward. It’s worth nothing that just weeks ago, Speaker Johnson was among a majority of GOP colleagues who opposed a similar stopgap spending bill advanced by his predecessor, Speaker Kevin McCarthy. That measure ultimately led to Mr. McCarthy’s removal as Speaker. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has told reporters he intends to bring the measure to a vote in the Senate “as soon as possible.”
